Herobrine is a rumored hostile mob and very powerful entity that does not really like to interact with players, but has been seen visiting their single-player worlds. The purpose of his visits is unknown. He is the center of endless speculation and Creepypasta.
~ An in-universe wiki page about Herobrine.

Herobrine is a major character in the Animation vs. Minecraft series, an Animator vs. Animation spin-off, serving as the main antagonist of the original Animation vs. Minecraft and a major character in Season 3 of the AvM Shorts.

He is a hostile entity from Minecraft that possesses Red and tries to steal the Minecraft Game Icon and its powers for himself, then take over the Animator's computer. While he was killed by the Stick Gang, Herobrine would be magically resurrected and move on with his life as the sole teacher of the Monster School, training a bunch of mobs into murdering players.

Biography[]

Animation vs. Minecraft[]

The Second Coming is wandering around the Animator's computer when he discovers the icon for the game Minecraft. He finds out he can use this item to build and play Minecraft directly on the desktop, and proceeds to make a house. Blue, Green, and Yellow show up, and the Second Coming allows them to play and create as well.

Red joins in, admiring all of the creations that his friends have built. Yellow offers the Minecraft Game Icon, or MGI for short, to Red. However, when he goes to grab it, he suddenly freezes. He begins acting different, lurching towards Yellow and punching him in the face. Red steals the MGI and begins holding it tightly. When the other stick figures come over to see what is wrong, Red uses the item to fight them, beating Yellow and the Second Coming, trapping Blue in a box, and throwing primed TNT at Green. Red then escapes into the computer's STORAGE folder.

The heroes prepare for combat by crafting tools and armor, then follow Red. In the folder, they come across mob spawners and are forced to fight off armies of Hostile Mobs. They survive, then find there is a hole in one of the windows they can travel through. After mining through, they fight off more mobs before finding Red, hunched over and gripping the MGI.

The Second Coming approaches Red, but he simply attacks and knocks him away. Yellow tries next, but is also knocked back. Green attempts an attack with a pickaxe, mining through Red's attacks and eventually hitting him. Green tries to take the block away, but Red stands back up and begins glitching, revealing that Herobrine is controlling him.

Herobrine/Red then creates a giant stone stick figure and attacks. Blue and Yellow try to fight if off, but fail. The stick figures then try using their pickaxes to break the giant, but Herobrine transforms the stone figure into an obsidian one and begins ruthlessly and repeatedly stomping on the stick figures, almost killing them. The Second Coming tries to fight back, but the obsidian golem grabs him and begins slamming him against the ground, ending by throwing him into a wall. The stick figures run, but Herobrine is close behind. The stick figures try to regroup and re-equip themselves, but they are out of food and all of their tools and armor are broken. However, the Second Coming refuses to back down, inspiring the others to do the same, using only non-weapons.

Herobrine arrives, and Green and Yellow use fishing rods to restrain his obsidian golem. The Second Coming uses a minecart to make the giant trip, and Blue plants a tree under the falling golem's head, bursting through the obsidian and throwing Herobrine and the Game Icon into the air. The Second Coming tries to get the item, but is stopped by Herobrine grabbing his leg and tripping him. However, Yellow, Green, and Blue come to the Second Coming's aid and push, tackle, and distract Herobrine so that the Second Coming can grab the MGI and throw it into the computer's recycling bin, deleting Minecraft from the computer. The computer returns to normal, and Red begins convulsing. Due to Minecraft being deleted, Herobrine starts dying before finally collapsing, emitting a spider's shriek before turning to dust.

Red returns to normal, and the other stick figures gratefully hug their returned friend and forgive him.

AVM Shorts[]

Season 1[]

The Rediscovery[]

In the first episode of the series, "The Rediscovery", the stick figures come across the MGI again (presumably reinstalled by the Animator), and are reluctant to give to Red again. After building a trap composing of the same items used in the previous videos, they give it to Red, who begins acting strange, only to reveal it was just a prank.

After this episode, the stick figures proceed to use the MGI many times later, with no sign of Herobrine again. It is unknown if he was revived with the game or not.

Season 3[]

Parkour[]

The events of Animation vs. Minecraft are shown to Purple by King Orange, implying that the latter wants the former to complete what Herobrine failed to do - Kill the Stick Gang. It was later revealed that he actually seeks to gain the power of the MGI to create a black hole that would destroy all of Minecraft, with him showing Purple the video of the original Animation vs. Minecraft.

Monster School[]

In this episode, he makes his long-awaited return, coming back from the dead under mysterious circumstances and becoming the leader and sole teacher of the titular school. He also appears to have seemingly forgot about the events of Animation vs. Minecraft, as while he does seem to recognize Red, he can't remember from where and just shrugs it off, forcing the stick figure to become one of his students.

Throughout the episode, Herobrine teachers his students (a bunch of hostile mobs and Red) various lessons, which include sneaking on players to kill them, running, acrobatics, swimming;and cooking. On all of them, Red is bullied by the monsters and keeps getting an F. The final exam is a team race. Red's team is composed of an enderman called Endie, a skeleton called Skellington and a spider called Spider. Herobrine watches the race on top of a cliff and relaxes as his students try to get to him and the prize first. Ultimately, it's Red's team that manages to win. As he hands them the prize and congratulates them, Endie teleports them all away, much to Herobrine's shock. In reality, Endie brought his team to the Nether portal Red came from, where they go on to confront King Orange.

The King[]

During the flashback at the beginning of the episode, King Orange is shown reading a Minecraft Mysteries book where one of the articles is about Herobrine, which reveals his skillset, mentions his Monster School and confirms that at least a few of the original Creepypasta's elements apply here, such as him stalking players in single player worlds. It's also shown that the video of the original Animation vs. Minecraft is what made King Orange learn about the Stick Gang.

During the fight against King Orange, Skellington is thrown into the air and flies right next to the Monster School portal, where he's caught by Herobrine. He's ordered to go back home, but Skellington claims he's not going to leave Endie and Spider behind. Realising his students are in danger, Herobrine confronts King Orange, with Red realising how brutal the fight is going to be. The legendary Minecraft creepypasta proves to have been hiding his true power when he manages to put up a good fight against a Double Minecraft Game Icon, all while taking the time to escort his students to safely. During the fight, King Orange absorbs one of the many Steve clones Herobrine spawned into its staff, causing the mob to take a few steps back and begin treating his opponent more seriously.

Herobrine himself is soon caught by the staff, but before he can be sucked in, he manages to enter Red's body at the very last second. He crafts the exact same giant obsidian golem he did in his debut appearance to fight the king. While he's busy fighting off a giant netherite sword, the other tries to stop King Orange, during which Skellington is absorbed into the staff, to Endie and Spider's shock. Herobrine then continues fighting King Orange, until he's finally outmatched and sucked out of Red's body into the staff. Before essentially dying, Herobrine glares at the king in anger one last time. Spider is sucked into the staff mere seconds later, and it doesn't take a while for Endie to follow him.

However, at the end of the episode, the Second Coming manages to save the day by escaping onto the computer while holding the Double Game Icon, knowing that going through a Nether portal causes it to glitch out. He's proven correct when he manages to fix the entire Nether and bring back everyone who perished, including Herobrine and his students. Before everyone parts their ways, Red gives his yellow headband to the Warden that helped the heroes fight against King Orange, with Endie, Skellington and Spider happily accepting him as a classmate. Seeing no reason to stay around, Herobrine teleports himself and his students, including the newcomer, back to his school.

During the credits, it's seen Herobrine has continued on with his life like usual, with the Warden proving himself to be popular among the students.

Season 4[]

Lucky Block Staff[]

Herobrine does not appear in person. However, Red manages to equip a Steve head onto a staff, which then turns into a Herobrine head when struck with lightning. The Herobrine Staff allowed Red to teleport, fly, possess supernatural strength and shoot out exploding Herobrine heads. The Herobrine Staff was eventually taken by the Orb, and was likely destroyed upon its defeat.

Actual Shorts[]

"Fireworks"[]

Herobrine is briefly referenced through a firework representing his face, with his three students following him immediately afterwards.

"Clicks Per Second"[]

The Fighting Stick Figures are seen creating a Herobrine shrine, implying they're trying to summon him to the computer for an unknown reason.

Appearance[]

Herobrine is a humanoid entity that shares the exact same characteristics and skin as Steve. However, Herobrine has bright pure white eyes without any pupils.

Personality[]

In his debut appearance, Herobrine was extremely violent and hostile, and will stop at nothing to have the power of creation and the rule of both Minecraft and the computer all to himself. He attacked in brutal and painful fashions, and is unrelenting until he kills those who oppose him. However, his reappearance in "Monster School" years later implies he mellowed out as the years went on, instead turning into a normal, if somewhat strict and apathetic teacher that still raises his students into becoming murderers. He also seemingly forgot about the whole conflict with the stick figures, as he only barely recognizes Red, and even then shows zero malice. It's also shown he genuinely cares about his students, as he high-fived Zombee and Zupay when they approached him. This is proven further when he unleashes his true power to save Endie and Spider from King Orange. It's also shown he's quick to accept new students, happily taking in the Warden to his school.

Powers[]

He can fly and teleport himself, while also being able to teleport others. He has been seen creating clones of himself and appears to be able to dodge any attack. Fighting Herobrine is not a wise choice.
~ An in-universe wiki page about Herobrine.
  • Possession - Herobrine can possess people, as seen through him haunting Red twice.
  • Invisibility - While not confirmed, it's implied Herobrine can make himself invisible, which would explain how he could possess Red without being spotted.
  • Entering single-player worlds - Herobrine has been mentioned to have visited single-player worlds prior to the events of Animation vs. Minecraft.
  • Combat skills - Even before he revealed his true power in "The King", his debut appearance showed him to be a skilled fighter able to defeat the stick figures all by himself, even if he mostly used brute force.
  • Omnificence - Herobrine can create whatever block and item he wants, making crafting tables and furnaces while teaching his students, manifesting headbands out of nothing but thin air for the Team Race, giving his clones whatever weapons he wants them to have and creating dozens of obsidian blocks to make a giant stick figure golem. Once he gets his hands on a Minecraft Game Icon, he can even create mobs.
  • Block manipulation - As shown in "The King", Herobrine not only can create blocks, but also has control over the ones around him, controlling the obsidian around him to create his third giant stick golem.
  • Reality-warping - With his various powers, such as telekinesis and creating blocks just to name a few, Herobrine quite easily qualifies as a reality-warper.
  • Supernatural speed - Herobrine can move at inhuman speeds, as shown through how easily he dodged all of King Orange's attacks in "The King".
  • Supernatural strength - As shown in "The King", Herobrine is so powerful he can destroy the unbreakable bedrock with one kick.
  • Durability - As shown in his debut appearance, Herobrine can survive being slashed with a sword and get up mere seconds later.
  • Telekinesis - As shown in "Monster School", Herobrine can move people with his mind, using it to force Red to attend his class.
  • Teleportation - As shown in "Monster School", Herobrine can make himself and the ones around him teleport to wherever he wants.
  • Illusionism - Herobrine can make people noncorporeal, as shown when he uses his telekinesis to force Red into his class.
  • Flight - As shown in "Monster School" and especially "The King", Herobrine can hover in the air.
  • Duplication - Herobrine can make hundreds of clones of himself at once that follow his every order, which he uses to train his students and fight opponents if necessary.
  • Resurrection - Herobrine can resurrect his students if they're killed by his clones, and potentially himself which would explain how he's suddenly alive during "Monster School".
  • Great dodging skills - Even the in-universe wiki page on Herobrine claim he can dodge practically any attack, a claim that is proven when he fights King Orange and, until he possesses Red, dodges all of his attacks.
  • Agility - As shown through his dodging skills and speed, Herobrine is quite agile.
  • Martial arts skills - Herobrine shows he knows the basics of it when fighting King Orange.
  • Swordsmanship - As shown when he possesses Red and creates a giant obsidian stick during "The King", Herobrine knows how to use a sword.
  • Archery - As shown when he possesses Red and creates a giant obsidian stick during "The King", Herobrine knows how to use a bow.

It's worth to note that it's heavily implied Herobrine loses a lot of his powers when possessing someone. The only ones that remain are his fighting skills (inc. martial arts skills, swordsmanship and archery), omnificence, block manipulation, super strength, durability and flight. This does not mean Herobrine is easier to defeat when haunting someone, however, and he's still very powerful even without the majority of his powers.

Trivia[]

  • Herobrine was once theorized to be the true identity for the Second Coming's Doppelganger before it was revealed to be a witch.
  • It's possible that Herobrine was the one behind the sudden spawns of the Nether Portal in Season 1 and the Lucky Blocks in Season 2.
    • If this proves to be true, then it's likely that Herobrine is still alive and was resurrected when the game got reinstalled.
      • While Herobrine is now confirmed to be alive, it is unknown if he had anything to do with the Nether Portals and Lucky Blocks.
  • It was theorized that Herobrine and King Orange are one in the same, and that Herobrine was revived when the game got re-installed and needs to retrieve the Game Icon to revert to his true form and once again gain control over the game. It would explain why King Orange has knowledge on Herobrine possessing Red and how the MGI's powers work.
    • Alternatively, it's possible that King Orange is instead going to use the Minecraft application to resurrect Herobrine.
      • However, with the release of the "Monster School" episode, both theories are debunked, as Herobrine is shown to be a teacher at the school and a completely separate entity from King Orange. This is shown even further in "The King", where the two are quite literally on opposing sides.
  • The "Monster School" episode is very obviously an adaptation of the YouTube series of the same name. Series creator Alan Becker based the episode off the original entries from the early 2010's by Willcraft, rather than the newer editions, as he believed the latter are "cringe".
  • Herobrine's rather stiff and poor-quality animations in Season 3 (such as him "teleporting" by literally shrinking out of existence) are a direct reference to Willcraft's Monster School videos, where the animation could be rather low-quality (or, according to Alan Becker, "lazy").
  • Despite being called a hostile mob, Herobrine fits the description of a neutral mob much more, as excluding his debut appearance he never directly attacks someone unless provoked (like with King Orange hurting his students and attacking him first).
  • Given the appearance of the Herobrine shrine in the Actual Shorts, it's possible The Herobrine Mod is canon to the series. However, this remains unconfirmed.
