Herr König is the main antagonist of the 2024 German science fiction horror film Cuckoo.

He was portrayed by Dan Stevens, who also played Frank in the 2024 comedy horror film Abigail.

Biography[]

Prior to the film[]

Through unknown means, König discovered humanlike creatures that he would nickname "Cuckoos" after the species of bird that performs brood parasitism. When he realizes that they were on the brink of extinction, König decides to devise a plan to save them. From there, he would make a hotel resort in the mountain range of the Bavarian Alps in Germany where one room in particular is used by married couples.

He would lure a Cuckoo in to disorient the male so that they could inseminate the female with their "eggs." During one instance of this, the police officer, Henry's wife is killed by a Cuckoo when she suffocated on her own vomit.

Gretchen's father Luis and her stepmother Beth would attend a honeymoon at the resort eight years ago with Beth getting impregnated by the hooded woman and give birth to Alma. It is implied that Luis was aware of what König was doing but did not say anything about it.

Present day[]

When the family move to the Bavarian Alps, König tries to keep Gretchen occupied with the front desk due to not anticipating that she'd come along. While there, Gretchen encounters several of the Cuckoos and is nearly killed by the hooded woman who believed that Gretchen was a threat to her daughter. After her coworker Trixie is attacked and nearly raped by the hooded woman, Gretchen confronts her father about the oddities happening leading to König taking Alma under the guise of her having a seizure.

Gretchen leaves her room to see that her family was missing. König offers to take her to the train station, but in reality, he instead takes her to his research facility and reveals the truth about Alma and the Cuckoos. He then sprays Gretchen with pheromones and uses a wooden instrument to signal an adolescent Cuckoo to inseminate Gretchen only to try to smother her with a pillow.

Henry arrives and kills the Cuckoo before shooting König. As Gretchen tries to escape with Alma, König kills Dr. Bonomo and goes after them. He gets into a shootout with the disgraced police officer while Gretchen fights the hooded woman and eventually kills her. Gretchen manages to earn Alma's trust and in turn, her stepsister uses her call to disorient Henry and König giving them enough time to escape.

As soon as they leave, the two men shoot at each other. It is currently unknown whether anyone survived the shooting or not.
