Ah, Gray, why do you force me to keep reminding you of your place here? Can you not just accept your lot in life and the gifts the Netherese have given you? I am not your enemy, I am your companion. And I am your superior. If you would commit that fact to memory, I would not have to continually remind you. Shave your beard and trim your hair! You look that part of a vagabond, and that will not do for one who serves the great Herzgo Alegni!
~ Herzgo Alegni torturing his slave Barrabus.
You think I will kill you? You will soon enough pray for such an outcome, pretty girl. I will hurt you, oh indeed! And then I will tie you down for years to come and fill your loins with my progeny!
~ Alegni taunting Dahlia.

Herzgo Alegni is a major antagonist of R.A Salvatore's The Legend of Drizzt, serving as the main antagonist of the Neverwinter Saga. He is a Tiefling warlord of the Shadovar, who sought to control Neverwinter. In doing so, he was put in conflict with the Red Wizard of Thay who wanted to use Neverwinter to create their Dread Ring. He was also responsible for raping Dahlia Sin'felle, and enslaving Artemis Entreri. He was the servant Draygo Quick, the father of Effron Alegni, and the archnemesis of Dahlia Sin'felle.

Appearance[]

Herzgo Alegni was a very large and muscular Tiefling, with red skin and large horns. He wore black studded armor and a flowing cape.

Personality[]

Alegni: Keep you enemies closer.
Arunika: Enemies? You have won, Herzgo Alegni. What enemies remain?
Alegni: Indeed.
Arunika: How close would you like to keep your enemies?
Alegni: Close enough to kill.
~ Alegni to Arunika before making love to her.

Herzgo Alegni was an incredibly sadistic and power-hungry person. He enjoyed killing his enemies and torturing his prisoners and servants, reveling in the misery he caused. He never showed any remorse for his actions and enjoyed taunting his victims, such as his rape victim Dahlia, who he mocked and humiliated for no reason other than sadism.

Alegni was incredibly petty and arrogant to a fault. He spent much of his time trying to rename a bridge that he was not involved with in any way, killing and torturing anybody who tried to stop him. He would go out of his way to inflict immense pain on anyone who he believed disrespected him.

Herzgo Alegni considered himself to be much more artistic and sophisticated than he really was. He would occasionally pretend that he only killed because he had to, but it wouldn't be long before the facade faded and his true sadistic, temperamental self was revealed. Despite this, he was a fairly intelligent individual.

Biography[]

The Start of His Career[]

I wasn't more than a child when the shadow of Herzgo Alegni fell over my clan. Twenty years ago.
~ Dahlia on Herzgo Alegni's attack on her village.

At some point, Herzgo Alegni was able to join the Netherese, despite their xenophobia. He became a fairly high ranking and powerful warlord working under the warlock Draygo Quick.

During one raid, Alegni attacked an elven village, murdering almost every inhabitant. During the raid, he raped and impregnated a young girl named Dahlia, before taunting and humiliating her. After murdering her mother in front of her, he left Dahlia alone in the destroyed village.

About a nine months later, Alegni saw Dahlia again. This time she stood on top of a mountain, holding his son she had given birth too. She then dropped to baby in order to get revenge on him and escaped the Netherese forces. However, unbeknownst to her, the baby, who was later named Effron survived the fall, and Alegni brought him back to Draygo Quick. After seeing that Effron was crippled from the fall, Alegni asked to kill him, but Draygo Quick denied his request and raised the boy, despite Alegni's protests.

At some point Draygo Quick gave Alegni a magical sword called Charon's Claw. Although the sword itself was formidable, the most powerful thing about it was the slave it controlled. In obtaining Charon's, Alegni forcibly controlled an incredibly skilled swordman named Artemis Entreri, who had attuned his soul to Charon's Claw long ago. Alegni and Entreri despised each other, but Quick made them work together.

First Attempt at Conquering Neverwinter[]

The beauty. No simple abutments or pillars! Nay! Everyone is covered in small designs destined to complete the whole image. Yes, the true signature of the craftsmen. I do so love when craft becomes art. Don't you agree?
~ Herzgo Alegni on the Winged Wyvern Bridge.

At some point Quick ordered Alegni to conquer Neverwinter. Alegni worked on this task for several years and got to the point where he practically controlled the city, with its real ruler being not much more than a puppet. During his time in Neverwinter, Alegni discovered the "Winged Wyvern Bridge", a bridge that he loved, but hated the name of. He believed that the name of the bridge should reflect its greatness, and ordered Artemis Entreri, now called Barrabus the Gray, to threaten the ruler into changing the name to "The Herzgo Alegni Bridge". Barrabus did so, and the name of the bridge was changed.

Very soon after, Mount Hotenow erupted, sending lava and ash onto Neverwinter. Alegni managed to escape by shadow walking, but the city was destroyed, undoing all the progress he had made. In addition, the Herzgo Alegni Bridge survived, but the name was changed back to the Winged Wyvern Bridge.

Second Attempt at Conquering Neverwinter[]

We are winning but have not yet won. We have two forces in play. Your own, meager as it is, and my own, with resources and power far beyond you understanding. To complete the victory, we must be joined in purpose under a single voice. Do we agree on those points?
~ Alegni manipulating his way to becoming lord of Neverwinter.

Ten years later, Herzgo Alegni returned to Neverwinter, now nothing but a small town struggling to rebuild. The Red Wizards of Thay were trying to wipe out the settlement in order to use their souls for their Dread Ring, so Alegni used his forces to fight of the Thayans and their allies the Ashmadai, and began to win over the people of Neverwinter. At one point, Barrabus saved the town because of Alegni's order, and as a reward, asked Jelvus Grinch (the leader of Neverwinter) to change the name of the Winged Wyvern Bridge to the Walk of Barrabus, in order to anger Alegni. He succeeded, and Alegni tortured him excessively.

During this time, Draygo Quick decided that Herzgo would not be able to conquer Neverwinter on his own, so sent Effron Alegni to help. This angered Herzgo Alegni, who was once again denied permission to kill his son.

Eventually, Alegni found out that his rape victim Dahlia was in the area and ordered Barrabus to kill her and her dark elf companion Drizzt Do'Urden. However, Barrabus instead joined the pair because they were trying to kill the leader of the Red Wizards in Neverwinter, Sylora Salm. The group succeeded, and Barrabus returned to Neverwinter, where Alegni took credit of the end of the Thayan threat and forced Jelvus Grinch and the people of Neverwinter to name him first citizen, with the help of a manipulative succubus name Arunika. They succeeded, although it was clear to all involved that Alegni was now the lord of Neverwinter for all intents and purposes. After Herzgo had been named first citizen, he slept with Arunika.

While Alegni ruled Neverwinter, Barrabus snuck off to join forces with Dahlia and Drizzt in him. Alegni, however, knew about the attack through Charon's Claw, which he used to see into Barrabus's mind. He prepared for the battle on his namesake bridge. Herzgo fought Dahlia, and was gravely injured before retreating to the Shadowfell.

Attempting to Regain Charon's Claw[]

It is not my responsibility. It is Herzgo Alegni's. Summon the other priests - as many as you can find. Mend every wound and stand him up.
~ Draygo Quick reviving Herzgo Alegni so he can retrieve his sword.

Herzgo was healed by Draygo Quick and sent out to retrieve Charon's Claw, which had been taken by Drizzt Do'Urden after the battle. Drizzt, Dahlia, and Entreri sought to take the magic sword to the ancient dwarf city of Gauntylgrym, where and ancient fire elemental live. There, they hoped to destroy the sword. Herzgo and Effron led a troupe of Netherese to Gauntylgrym in an effort to stop them.

In Gautygrym, the Netherese encountered the drow House Xorlarrin, who were setting up a city there. After battling his way through the drow, Herzgo once again fought Dahlia. This time, she killed him stabbing him with her weapon several times. The last thing Herzgo Alegni ever saw was his son Effron screaming to him from a few yards away.

Powers and Abilities[]

Herzgo Alegni was an extremely proficient swordfighter, being able to defeat almost anyone he encountered. He was also incredibly strong. Upon becoming a shade, Alegni had the ability to shade teleport to the Shadowfell. He used this to escape lethal situations.

Draygo Quick gifted Alegni with Charon's claw, and him using it showed his extraordinary will, due to the weapon being notoriously difficult to control. Charon's Claw lethally poisoned anyone who it even nicked, as well as giving Alegni infravision and the ability to create opaque black walls. Alegni used the sword to control Artemis Entreri, and could read to assassin's thoughts as well as make him feel incredibly intense pain at any moment.

Trivia[]

  • Herzgo Alegni is the first confirmed serial rapist to appear in The Legend of Drizzt.
  • After Herzgo Alegni's death, the Herzgo Alegni bridge's name was changed back to the Winged Wyvern Bridge.
