~ Candyman explaining his origin to his great-great-granddaughter Annie. |
Heyward Sullivan who was Caroline Sullivan's father, is the overarching antagonist of the Candyman franchise, based on the short story "The Forbidden" from Clive Barker's horror anthology novel Books of Blood.
He was the one responsible for the murder of the slave who would become Candyman at the hands of a lynch mob - who brutally tortured him for the "crime" of having sex with a Caucasian woman (more accurately Caroline, his daughter - whom he had entrusted the slave to paint a portrait of, unaware the two were actually in love), who subsequently became pregnant.
He was played by Randy Oglesby.
Appearance[]
In flashbacks, Heyward was depicted as a middle-aged man with dark brown hair, as well as a fashionable moustache. He wore an all black suit with a slighter brighter vest with buttons over it, a medium green undershirt with an added ribbon, shiny, black boots, and a black fedora.
Biography[]
Sometime around 1890, Heyward hired Daniel Robitaille to capture the beauty of his daughter, Caroline Sullivan. When he discovered that Daniel fell in love with and inpregnated her, Heyward recruited a lynch mob to help him kill Daniel.
The landlord and his gang chopped off Daniel's arm and smeared his beaten body with honey - as a final act of cruelty they all referred to Daniel "Candyman" before watching a swarm of bees ting him to death (Heyward also had them keep Caroline from saving Daniel's life). Afterwards, Heyward used a small mirror belonging to Caroline to show Daniel why she should no longer love him. Little did the landlord know, Daniel's soul was imprinted onto the mirror.
Given the time period he lived in, Heyward was likely never punished for his crimes. He had most certainly been long dead by the beginning of the original Candyman movie, but it was never confirmed what exactly happened to Heyward.
