Hickey later meets John Smith when he is in an argument with Doyle. He asks him if one told him that the children in the orphanage burned like candles. Knowing he is the one who killed Doyle’s men, Hickey advises him to not believe everything said about him and goes to Doyle’s office.
Hockey is sent to the Mexican town of El Mirado to catch Giorgio Carmonte. When he finds him, he shoots all the Mexican soldiers with him. Seeing an American official with Carmonte, he puts his rifle away, saying he wouldn't dare shoot a unharmed man in the back. The American is about to arrest him, but Hickey draws a pistol and shoots him in the head. He then takes Carmonte back to Jericho and informs Strozzi’s men that the crime lord must pay 100 at the border to save him and that they have two days to give back the trucks to Doyle.
Hickey assists to the exchange between Strozzi and Doyle. The exchange at first goes well, but Hickey shoots the man who brought the briefcase with the money inside. This prompts Strozzi to show he has Doyle’s daughter in hostage and tell he will keep her as long as he Carmonte is not released. This forces Doyle to agree. Strozzi and Doyle then leave the place once the exchange is done.
Later, Smith comes in Doyle’s office to work for him and demands 1000 grants. Hickey is angry and shoots in the air to express his disagreement. At Doyle’s command, he stops shooting and leaves.
The next day, he goes to the cabin with Doyle where his girl is and finds out she’s gone. Smith claims she was hold captive by Strozzi’s men and fled when the shootout between them and Smith happened. Hickey is nevertheless suspicious on Smith as he notices a gun who wasn’t used in the cabin.
Hickey visits Smith when he is taking a bath. He explains one of Doyle’s men has been informed that Doyle’s girl went to Mexico freely, so Smith had lied to him. Hickey asks him who he is and what is his purpose. Smith still doesn’t flinch. So, Hickey takes him to Doyle where he is tortured.

However, the corrupt sheriff of the town informs Doyle that Smith is at Slim’s Roadhouse. Doyle and his men go there and wipe out Strozzi’s gang, Hickey personally shooting Strozzi.
After Doyle's victory, Hickey travels to Mexico with Doyle to find Felina without success. He returns to Jericho at the roadhouse to find Smith waiting for him. Hickey offers to finish Smith, but Doyle instead offers again a job to Smith. To his complete indifference, Doyle is shot to death by the bartender. Hickey feigns wanting to flee and proposes Smith to meet him in Chicago to settle their scores there. He drops his rifle and turns back while preparing to draw his pistol to shoot Smith.
