The High Priest Not to Be Described is an antagonist in The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath by H.P. Lovecraft. It is an enigmatic entity inhabiting the Plateau of Leng described as a yellow-masked creature that prays to "the Other Gods and their crawling chaos Nyarlathotep". It is served by the Men of Leng.
History
The High Priest only appears once, when the protagonist Randolph Carter is captured by the Men of Leng, who bring him to their master, the High Priest. During their conversation, the High Priest reveals that the Night-Gaunts, creatures of the Dreamlands thought to serve Nyarlathotep, in fact serve the Elder Gods. Carter is then gripped with a sudden fear due to the danger of the High Priest, and throws one of his captors into a large pit that seems to be connected with the High Priest's rituals before escaping. The High Priest is not seen again.
Trivia
- Some have connected the High Priest Not to Be Described with Hastur due to the creature being clad in yellow.
- It has also been theorized to be an avatar of Nyarlathotep.
- A yellow-clad being inhabiting Leng conversing with the last Elder Pharos appears in Lovecraft's poem Fungi From Yuggoth, and has been theorized to be either Nyarlathotep or the High Priest Not to Be Described.
