The High Sheriff of Nottingham is a supporting antagonist in the 1938 film The Adventures of Robin Hood.
He was portrayed by the late Melville Cooper.
Biography[]
The Sheriff is the head of law enforcement in the shire of Nottingham, serving under Sir Guy of Gisbourne. The two men are loyal to Prince John, and the Sheriff schemes with Guy to get John on the throne and oppress the Saxons of England. Unlike John and Guy, who are both highly intelligent, the Sheriff is depicted as a cowardly imbecile and is not well respected or feared by anyone. However, he does show some intelligence such as when he suggests to John that they trap Robin Hood by holding an archery tournament. At the end of the film, after King Richard returns from the Crusades and exiles John, the Sheriff is banished along with him.
