Hilda Van Der Koy is one of the two main antagonists (along with the Shaman) of the 2024 dystopian action comedy film Boy Kills World. She is the matriarch of the Van Der Koy family and a powerful dictator who rules over an unnamed city for decades. As the film goes on, it's revealed she is the mother of the protagonist, the Boy.
She was portrayed by Famke Janssen, who also portrayed Dark Phoenix in the X-Men film series, Rachel Wright in I Spy, Xenia Onatopp in GoldenEye, and Muriel in Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.
Biography[]
Hilda is the matriarch of the Van Der Koys, consisting of her unnamed husband, her sons Gideon (and the Boy), her sister Melanie, her daughter, Mina, and her brother-in-law Glen. For decades, Hilda rules the city with an iron fist, killing any dissidents, and enforcing strict laws for citizens to abide. A resistance group founded by the Shaman, ended up killing Hilda's husband in one of the attacks.
Hilda has been training the Boy to be his next enforcer in line, in which she teaches him how to shoot, before practicing on the Shaman's family. After the Boy panicked and ran to the jungle, he was kidnapped by the Shaman who seeks vengeance on Hilda for killing his family. By doing so, he spent years brainwashing and torturing the Boy psychologically, turning him into a ruthless killing machine. Hilda has been paranoid ever since she lost the Boy, and starts hallucinating of the Shaman in some places. She eventually went into hiding at her bunker, in which Melanie took over as the new ruler of the city. It's also revealed Hilda created the Culling to protect herself from the Shaman, mindlessly killing innocents despite the criminals were reduced.
During the recent Culling, Hilda has appeared during the opening. But she was surprised when she sees the now grown-up Boy as one of the captured innocents, and starts seeing the Shaman amidst the audience. As she leaves the stage. the Boy breaks free and massacres the security and staff with his resistance allies, which results in the death of Melanie and Gideon. As the Boy approaches the elevator to his way to the bunker, Hilda appears through the camera and microphone. As the Boy reveals his drawing by Mina, Hilda was surprised and orders the guards to stand down. As he was taken to her room, Hilda was happy to see her son again, and shows him the paintings of the family, ultimately revealing Boy was Hilda's son all along, and his sister was the enforcer June 27. In shock that he was one of the executioners of Hilda's empire, Boy cannot response and reconcile, which results in Hilda ordering Mina to kill him. But as she is prepared to do it, Boy shows Mina the middle finger they used to do when they were young, which convinced Mina to not kill him. She took the hatchet and buries it on Hilda's head, killing her, thus ending her reign and avenging all those who died in her hands.
