Hildy is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Cecily) of the 2025 Adult Swim Drama Animated series, Common Side Effects.
She is mycologist and long time friend of Marshall Cuso who was obsessed with finding the Blue Angel Mushroom, and initially a ally for Marshall before becoming more obsessed, attempting to kill him to steal the mushroom for herself.
She is voiced by Sue Rose.
Personality[]
Hildy is an intelligent old woman who despises Big Pharma as well as the government who attempted to find the elusive Blue Angel Mushroom. While she appears a gruff, yet well meaning older woman and mentor figure for Marshall, but she distrusted him with how he will handle the Mushroom and demanded it for herself, revealing herself to extremely homicidal in trying to kill Marshall.
It is implied she’s mentally ill to a degree, with Marshall mentioning her needing medication, and her sanity only seemed to go downhill once she gets healed by the Blue Angel Mushroom and begins seeing the Humanoids, becoming increasingly more homicidal and obsessed.
Despite her hatred of Big Pharma, Hilda immediately shows herself to be a hypocrite who is willing to adopt their practices. Once she obtains Marshall’s mushrooms when he’s sent to prison and sets up camp in his area, she begins exploiting the citizens of the North Carolina town by charging them money and making them wait long lines, all the while manipulating her allies to keep them in line.
Biography[]
Not much is known about Hildy’s life or background, except the fact she is a well respected Mycologist who’s been in the career for most of her life, and has mentored both Marshall as well as Amelia. She once spent 15 years in Peru in search for the Blue Angel Mushroom, but was unable to find anything, making her believe it isn’t true.
Episode 3 - Hildy[]
After his near assassination, Marshall visits Hildy at her home deep into the woods in hopes of making a partnership with her. Hildy appears doubtful over the legitimacy but when Marshall explains that he found it next to a dumping site from Reutical, she realizes that the Mushroom is powered by the pollution of the dumping sites, a revelation that makes them ecstatic. Things take a turn, however when Hildy demands to see the Mushroom, culminating in her pulling a gun on him and demanding. When Marshall attempts to deescalate the situation, Hildy turns the gun on herself and shoots her chest, which forces Marshall to use the mushroom on her. As she’s healed, she expirences an hallucination where she’s in a field and finds her head, which breaks and repeatedly ages her until it forms a blue orb of light. Hildy attempts to grab the orb before it is snagged away by an arm (Presumably Marshall’s) and she wakes up completely healed. As the two debate over what to do, Hildy seems suspicious over Marshall’s friend Frances, believing he’s too soft and easy to manipulate to use the mushroom and demands he give the mushroom’s to her. Hildy pulls a gun on him again, only to be revealed Marshall took the bullets out and ran back, with Hildy screaming at him to hand the mushrooms over. In the ending sequence, Hildy invites two fellow mycologists, Thaddeus and Linda, to hunt down Marshall and get the mushrooms.
Episode 4 - Dumpsite[]
Hildy is seen in one of the polluted areas with Thaddeus and Linda, trying to find Marshall’s location, to which she deems a bust as she goes on her map to find more locations where he could potentially be,
Episode 5 - Star Del Light[]
As Marshall and Frances visit the hardware store to get supplies, Frances is confronted by Hildy who spitefully talks down to her over manipulating Marshall for her own means, freaking Frances out enough to leave the store and wait for Marshall.
Episode 6 - In The System[]
Hildy visits Marshall in prison, attempting to get answers of how he figured out the key to making the Mushroom’s grow. She attempts to convince him and says that Frances played and manipulated him, to which is unable to believe as he leaves the visit area, with Hildy yelling about wanting answers.
Episode 9 - Cliff’s Edge[]
Amelia takes Marshall out of the prison and brings him back to North Carolina, where it’s revealed Hildy has taken over and set up a compound, and has Amelia bring Marshall out of prison. Hildy explains after he was arrested and Frances fled, Hildy made allies with Jimmer Jarvis and his nephews to help her produce and distribute the Mmauhroons. She eventually convinces Marshall to help, who reveals that Socrates’ feces are what powers the mushrooms. Soon enough, the operations goes running as the town in North Carolina are treated for ailments. But as Marshall notices, Hailey begins abusing her power, letting in people with only minor injuries as well as forcing Marshall away when people show their gratitude for his help. He also finds out they’ve been using their little supplies for making Tincture, which Marshall orders to be stopped, but Hildy has them continue over his head. Marshall then discovers they’ve been charging the patients for care, with Hildy explaining that Rusty and his cousins are paying and they also deal drugs to people who wish to get high, enraging Marshall who demands him to stop.
Hildy initially appears to agree, and asks Marshall to walk with her. Marshall is stopped by the man he previously saved in a car accident, whose gone insane from seeing the Humanoids and tries to kill him, but is tackles and beaten up by Rusty as Hildy tells Marshall to follow her. The two argue about the ethical nests of what they do and says they need to slow down, to which Hildy capitulates as they walk to a cliffside, before promptly shoving Marshall off a cliff.
Episode 10 - Raid[]
When the FBI raids the compound, Hildy abandons the area with Thaddeus and Linda with the Mushroom Tincture, ordering Linda to stay behind and hold them off before abandoning her. She’s seen in the final sequence, dumping the tincture into the water supply with a smirk on her face.
