~ Demegawa |
Hitoshi Demegawa is a supporting character in the manga/anime series Death Note. He is a greedy news anchor at Sakura TV, who tries to exploit the Kira case for publicity, and ends up becoming Kira's spokesman.
In the English dub, he is voiced by Ward Perry and Louis Chirillo. In the Japanese dub, he is voiced by Hirotaka "Chafurin" Shimazawa.
History[]
He's a greedy reporter for Sakura TV who sensationalizes the Kira murders, treating him as a celebrity. He's first seen berating his staff for not getting better ratings, before receiving orders from the Second Kira to broadcast a message to the world. He eagerly agrees, saying his ratings will go through the roof. However, the initial broadcast is stopped by Soichiro Yagami, who confiscates the tapes. He's later allowed to air Kira's message demanding L to appear on TV.
He's later seen working with Soichiro to air a news story to bait out and arrest Kyosuke Higuchi, though he's again only doing it to boost ratings.
Five years later, Light chooses him as his spokesman. Demegawa turns Sakura TV into a propaganda network for Kira, saying anyone who tries to catch Kira is a criminal, and instructs his viewers to report the names of anyone who is against Kira so that they can be killed. When he learns the location of the SPK, he leads a violent mob to attack the building, ordering them to drag Near and the others in front of the cameras so they can be sacrificed to Kira. However, when Near throws a huge wad of money outside as a diversion, Demegawa betrays Kira in order to steal the money, and Near and the others are able to escape.
A short time later, Demegawa decides to scam his viewers out of their money, setting up a fake cult to worship Kira and demanding donations starting at the million-yen mark. Light is disgusted by this and decides Demegawa has gone out of control, but since he's under surveillance he can't kill him. Teru Mikami, who has been made the new Kira, also sees the broadcast and realizes Kira wouldn't want this. He makes the Shinigami eye deal with Ryuk, before using the Death Note to kill Demegawa and his aides.
Personality[]
Demegawa is a sleazy, greedy, and arrogant man who only cares about fame and money. He treats Kira as a celebrity to get attention and is willing to join his cause just so he can be in the spotlight, and was even willing to lynch the SPK members on his behalf. He also has no true loyalty to Kira and only followed him in order to make money.
