~ Noah Kaiba watching in amusement as an unconscious Tea is being carried off by the Hitotsu-Me Giants. |
The Hitotsu-Me Giants are recurring minor antagonists in the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise. It is a duel monster card usually used by some of the early series antagonists, particularly Seto Kaiba. During the Virtual World Arc, four virtual versions of this monster appear as major antagonists during the three-part episode "Isolated In Cyberspace", in which they kidnap one of the leading characters, Tea Gardner, and attempt to eat her.
Biography[]
Virtual World Arc[]
Creation[]
Seeking revenge on his older stepbrother Seto Kaiba, Noah abducts him and the other protagonists and seemingly transports them to his virtual universe. He sends the female protagonist Tea Gardner to a large barren rock-formation filled canyon where she finds herself alone and separated from her friends. As he watches her, Noah decides to make things a bit more interesting, and amusing for himself, by creating four virtual versions of the duel-monster Hitotsu-Me Giant. Giving them wooden axes and clubs and cloths made from animal skins, Noah sends them after Tea, hoping that their encounter will bring him some amusement.
Going after Tea[]
Meanwhile, Tea wanders through the virtual canyon she has been sent too, hoping to somehow find her friends. As she walks further into the canyon the giants quietly stalk her from behind the rocks, believing her to a big game for them to hunt. At first, Tea is unaware of them until she hears some rocks tumbling down from a nearby cliff. When she looks up to see what was causing the noise, she, for a second, sees one of the giants who promptly flees behind the rocks after realizing that it has been spotted. With their cover blown, the Hitotsu-Me Giants reveal themselves to their prey, surrounding her position as they lurk along the cliffs and from the rocks. Though scarred of the creatures, Téa attempts to subtly flee by walking back very slowly. This does her no good, as her first step back results in her blue platform shoe, kicking up a small loose pebble. This alerts the giants to her attempt to escape causing them to attack. One of giants begins the attack roaring ferociously before jumping off of the nearby cliff it is standing on. As the beast flies through the air, it throws a large wooden axe, hoping to strike Téa down. The axe spins through air at an alarming speed, but does not strike the girl. The giant’s attack however, does not leave Téa unscathed however, as its forceful impact on the grounds kicks up a number of tiny but sharp rocks, one of which leaves Téa with a very small but painful gain on her left cheek. Leaving her no time to recover, the giants move closer towards their prey, causing her to flee. The giants quickly pursue her, but only three chase after her. The fourth one is then revealed to have been hiding behind the rocks, waiting for Téa to run its way. When she reaches its position the giant appears in front of her and blocks off her escape. With the terrified girl cornered, giant razes its claws and slashes them at Tea, painfully knocking her into unconsciousness.
Succeeding in subduing her, the presumed leader of the Hitotsu-me Giants throws the unconscious Tea over its shoulder and leads its pack through the canyon back to the cave-lair. Sometime during their long walk, Noah, operating from his cyber-chair on his virtual command center, checks in on the giants’ progress. Using one of his digital holographic screens, Noah briefly watches and laughs as his Hitotsu-Me Giant minions continue carry the insensate Tea deeper into the barren valley. Sometime later, the giants arrive with Tea to the cave that serves as their lair. Once inside, the giant carrying Tea on its shoulder, unceremoniously dumps her onto a flatted stone structure overlooking the rest of the cave. Thrown side-first onto the rock floor of the structure, Tea squirms in pain as she lies on a bed of pure solid rock. Her misery and pain amuses the giants who loom over her smiling, with their single eyes glowing red in the dark, as they stare down at her menacingly. The giants then climb down to the bottom of the cave to relax before they ready their dinner.
After an unknown amount since being brought to the cave, Tea regains consciousness as she lies on the stone structure overlooking the cave. After hearing one of them roar she then notices, the Hitotsu-Me Giants down below, where some are sleeping, sharpening their tools, or play-fighting. One however, the same that gave Tea her cut and carried over its shoulder, notices that the girl has awakened. Though it snarls at her, causing her jump in fear, the giant leaves alone on-top of the structure, deciding to deal with her later. After a while, the giants build a small fire and place a large cauldron filled with boiling water over it. As the giants laugh sinisterly, an onlooking Tea realizes that they kidnapped her in order to turn her into their next meal. Using a loose vine, she started climbing out of the cave towards the exit; a huge hole at the top of the cave. Her escape does not go unnoticed however, as the giants soon see her fleeing, raising their clubs in anger as their dinner climbs away. By the time Tea reaches the top, the giants are already climbing after her, forcing her to run from them once again. When they reach the top, one of them throws an axe at Tea but it just barely misses, landing right before her feat. Running on all-fours, the giants relentlessly pursue Tea, hoping to recapture her and bring her back to the cave. Tea eventually runs to a not so sturdy rope-bridge with a raging river running below it. She attempts to cross but so to do the giants when they arrive. Despite the girl’s warnings, the giants foolishly work their way across the bridge after her, despite it obviously not being able to withstand the weight of them all. Just as they are about to reach Tea, the bridge finally gives out and collapses. While Tea survives by holding onto a part of the bridge that still hangs from the top, the Hitotsu-Me Giants meet their by falling into and drowning in the raging river below.
Appearance[]
The Hitotsu-Me Giants are portrayed as large, muscular red-eyed cyclops with light greenish-blue skin. They have no lips making their teeth fully visibly. They also have long pointed ears, sharps claws on their hands and feet, and protruding muscles from their spines . For clothing they were caveman-like animal skin robes.
Personality[]
The Hitotsu-Me Giants are shown to be extremely feral, brutish, gluttonous, and savage creatures. They treated Tea, a human, like a common animal, hunting her and attempting to cook her. They are also very persistent as well, as they chase after Tea when she escapes and even pursue her onto an unsteady rope-bridge. This also reveals their lack of intelligence as they all walked in the bridge together despite their over bearing size and weight, which is what lead to their deaths. Despite this, they do show some signs of intelligence such as communication with one another and crafting their tools and weapons. They also are shown to laugh and smile wickedly from time to time implying that they are also sadistic in hunting their prey. Their kidnapping of Tea could also be interpreted as a sign of sadism as well, as they chose to take her alive instead of killing her, implying that they intended to cook her while she still alive. Another emotion they show is fear, as they were visibly horrified when the bridge gave way and they fell to their deaths.
Relationships[]
Noah Kaiba- While there is no direct interaction between them, Noah is the creator of the Virtual Hitotsu-Me giants and their master. He was the one who sent them after Téa during the Virtual World Arc. He was pleased and amused when giants captured Téa. However, Noah showed no anger over their deaths, seeing them only as virtual play things.
Téa Gardner- The giants literally saw Téa as a common animal and thus they hunted and captured her with the intention of eating her. She therefore, possessed great fear of the monsters as they attacked her and desperately tried to escape them when they pursued her. She was very relieved when they fell to their deaths.
Members[]
The Leader[]

The Leader of the Hitotsu-Me Giants, as his name suggests, is the leading member of the pack who gives them orders. His clothing is that of a small piece of fabric that extends from his waist down to his upper legs, along with wearing bandages around his wrists and ankles. His signature weapon is his large stone-made axe which he uses during his hunting expeditions. The Leader is by far the cruelest and most sadistic member of the pack, taking relish in the suffering of his prey and is quite abusive to the ones he takes alive. He is arguably Téa’s arch-nemesis, partly because he was the one that seemed most determined to devour her. Another is that he was the one that gave Téa the scratch on her face and later carried her off to the cave, something only the leader of a hunting party was allowed to do. Despite his brutish and feral attitude, he is shown to be a skilled and cunning hunter, using clever strategy to capture his prey, such as successfully luring Téa into a trap in order to catch. His arrogance and obsession however, with eating Téa made his foolishly order his pack to follow after her on the rope bridge despite its obviously deteriorating state. In the end, his actions brought about the end of him and his tribe.
Hitotsu-Me Giant #2[]

This Hitotsu-Me Giant seems to function as something of the pack’s second-in-command. He is often seen by the Leader’s side and follows his orders without question. Sometimes he even takes the lead in place of the Leader, showing that the Leader places trust in him and lets him give orders to the others. Like his Leader, this Giant can often be seen wielding an axe during his hunting expeditions. During the attack on Téa, under the Leader’s orders, this Giant cleverly hid himself behind one of the canyon’s rock formations while Téa was distracted by the others chasing her. This allowed him to patiently wait until she was driven towards his position where he executed his part of the plan and attacked, knocking Téa unconscious after a single strike from his claws. It was because of him that Téa was taken prisoner by the pack.
Hitotsu-Me Giant #3[]

This Hitotsu-Me Giant is identical to the second, except that his weapon of choice is a large wooden club instead of a battle-axe. He is shown to compliant with the Leader and his second-in-command, following their orders without hesitation.
Club-Wielding Hitotsu-Me Giant[]

Arguably the most brutish and least intelligent of the four Hitotsu-Me Giants, he is almost identical to the Leader in appearance, except that is almost constantly seen wielding a large wooden club.
Trivia[]
- Unlike their card version, the virtual Hitotsu-Me Giants wear animal skin robes, similar to cavemen.
- The number of giants in Isolated in Cyberspace seems to vary, as four are depicted chasing Tea, but for brief moment more could be seen in their lair.
- During their first appearance when they attack Tea in the canyon their is a minor difference between the US and Japanese versions. In the original Japanese version when the giant threw its axe at her Tea was given a small cut on her cheek from the rocks it kicked up. This was edited out of US version since blood was shown.
- While it is not stated, it is implied that the Hitotsu-Me Giant that threw its axe at Tea and later carried her to the cave may have been the leader of the pack.
