The Hobgoblins are a species of unknown origins who were locked in the vault of an abandoned movie studio.
Biography[]
The Hobgoblins are small creatures with green skin, sharp teeth, yellow eyes, four clawed hands, pointed ears and silvery fur, their species has the ability to psychically project their victim's deepest desires, using as a fisherman uses a lure. The psychic manifestation can only be destroyed if the Hobgoblin (or Hobgoblins) who were projecting the scenario are incapacitated or killed.
It's unknown what the hobgoblins actually get from killing people, as they don't seem to eat their victims. The only thing they seem to get out of it is sadistic pleasure. McCreedy, who kept them imprisoned for 30+ years, suggested they may not actually be evil at all and were simply trying to make peoples' dreams come true, and only killed by accident on account of the victims' dreams being inherently self-destructive. This doesn't hold up to what is shown in the film, though its possible that the hobgoblins used to be this way and only became intentionally murderous after decades of confinement.
History[]
Some time in the 1950's, a spaceship landed on Earth in the parking lot of a movie studio, carrying a set of small, furry creatures. These hobgoblins attached themselves to the humans working in the studio, using their powers of reality warping to make everyone suddenly become wealthy and famous. However, they would always inevitably end up killing their targets. McCreedy, the studio security guard, found out about the creatures and attempted to warn people, but his claims were dismissed. With no other options, he tricked the hobgoblins into entering an old film vault and sealed them inside.
McCreedy kept the hobgoblins imprisoned for 30 years until he became an old man. The studio head, fearing that the insurance wouldn't take care of things if an accident happened while no one was on duty, demanded McCreedy train a partner for himself. His first attempt at getting a new partner ended with the young man being killed by the hobgoblins, when he was shown a vision of himself performing a rock concert and attempted to crowdsurf on the non-existent crowd, instead simply diving headfirst into concrete, but this time McCreedy managed to seal the vault again before the monsters could get out. The second time he wasn't so lucky. Though this partner, Kevin, survived his encounter with the hobgoblins, the two weren't able to seal the vault door before the hobgoblins escaped.
The creatures proceeded to go on a rampage, targeting Kevin's friends. They first attacked at his house where the friends were staying, attempting to lure them away and kill them off one by one. The result was a frantic night of Kevin driving from place to place, to stop his friends from being murdered, first going to "Reputation Road" to save a lovesick friend from being pushed off a cliff by his illusionary "perfect woman", then to a sleazy night club where his sexually repressed friend was manipulated into finally letting go of her inhibitions. It was at the nightclub one of his friends seemingly died, when the newly enlisted soldier's drill instructor (actually an illusion) killed him with an incendiary grenade. However, the friend was later revealed to have survived with only minor burns, somehow.
In the end, the hobgoblins returned to the film studio of their own accord, apparently viewing the vault as their home base. Though they could have easily been sealed inside once again, McCreedy had been fired that night and could no longer watch over them. Kevin offered to take up the job, but McCreedy didn't want Kevin to waste his life the way McCreedy had, and instead blew up the vault with explosives, killing the hobgoblins.

Trivia[]
- Hobgoblins are obviously made to cash in on the late eighties trend of non-human creatures causing a mess and screwing up lives, they are basically if you smooshed together the Mogwai from Gremlins and the Krites from Critters.
- The film was mainly known for its appearance on the movie-riffing show Mystery Science Theatre 3000.
- It was later revealed in a documentary made by the original cast about 30 years later, that they only managed to give one of the Hobgoblin puppets a movable mouth.
