~ Astor ordering his Hollows to assassinate Princess Zelda. |
The Hollows are major antagonists in the 2020 video game Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, who are created by Astor for the purpose of acting under his orders to halt the progress of the heroes. They are molded after the Champions, Mipha, Daruk, Revali, and Urbosa; the Link Hollow also appears later on in the game. They also have the fighting styles and weapons as their normal counterparts, but they are much less durable than the original ones and are able to warp at will to confuse their foes and overpower them quickly. Being consisted of pure Malice, they are very weak to the power of the Master Sword.
History[]
After Revali used Divine Beast Vah Medoh to clear the way for his comrades to enter the monster infested Korok Forest, Astor is present with the Yiga Clan, and he senses their presences and suspects that they are looking for the Master Sword, the key to Calamity Ganon's downfall. To prevent them from reaching the legendary sword, Astor used the Malice to create the evil clones of the four Champion Pilots where they maintain the Malice that blocks the way to the clearing and to have them kill any warrior that wanders near them. Link and his companions, including Hestu, encounter strange appearances of the Malice blocking their way and they travel to four locations where each Hollow is stationed. When one of the Hollows is defeated, it will remove a chunk of the Malice and Astor will be angered that one of his handiworks is destroyed and orders the monsters to defend the remaining Hollows from the warriors. After all the Champion Hollows are destroyed, the Malice will vanish completely. Link and Princess Zelda enter the clearing where they see Astor waiting for them and revives the Hollows to attack the duo. In the midst of the battle, the Urbosa Hollow attempts to ambush Link from behind with her scimitar, only for the Mipha Hollow to use her trident to snag Link's standard Hyrulean Army sword and manage to break it in half, disarming him of his main offensive weaponry. With Link disarmed, the Revali Hollow shoots Malice bomb arrows at Link with his bow as cover for the Malice Daruk to toss Link aside by slamming his shield hard with his large sword, sending Link crashing up against the Master Sword's pedestal and rendering him incapacitated. With Zelda unprotected, Astor then orders the Hollows to assassinate the princess, but before they could succeed, with the Urbosa Hollow about to run Zelda through the face with her scimitar as she lunged to draw first blood, Link, horrified that the Princess is about to be killed, tries to reach out for her, and his willpower awakens the Master Sword, causing the light from the Master Sword to shine bright enough to dispel the Hollows before they could reach her, unable to maintain their forms against the light of the Blade of Evil's Bane, with the Urbosa Hollow's scimitar being stopped only inches from Zelda's face as the Hollows appear to groan and wilt before dissolving, allowing Link enough time to pull the Master Sword out of its pedestal and use it to force Astor into retreat, realizing the Master Sword is too powerful for him to fight at this moment. The Four Champion Hollows appear one more time as one last obstacle for Link and the others to defeat to get back to Hyrule Castle, but are swiftly defeated again by Link and the Master Sword, due to its power being their very weakness.
Later on, after Mipha, Daruk, Revali, and Urbosa, are saved from the Blight Ganons as well as the Divine Beasts being saved from the said demons, Astor starts to lose his mind and betrays the Yiga Clan by extracting the spirits of the fallen Yiga Footsoldiers to revive the Blights. As he cruelly mocks them for their slow-mindedness and having found a way to make use of the clan for his own interests, he summons a Link Hollow to attack Master Kohga and Sooga. As Sooga blocks the Link Hollow's attacks with both his katanas, he urges Kohga to get to safety, but he refuses to leave him behind, and Sooga respects his decision and vows to protect him, even if it meant that he will likely lose his life. The Link Hollow becomes the primary Hollow that Astor would use in the later battles, including the final battle at Hyrule Castle and two of the Guardian of Remembrance DLC scenarios. After Calamity Ganon is successfully sealed by Princess Zelda, the Hollows are completely destroyed as well.
Members[]
Mipha Hollow[]
“ | How can I beat back my own shadow? | „ |
~ Mipha's reaction to her dark copy. |
The Mipha Hollow is an entity that strongly resembles the zora Champion Mipha. It's located at the southwestern reaches of the forest, and has the same moveset as the normal one, with the exception of Mipha's Grace which it cannot use to heal itself or its allies.
Should the real Mipha confront this entity, she will be horrified to see that she is dealing with her own doppelganger with similar skills to her.
Daruk Hollow[]
“ | Hey, you! Don't go ruinin' my good name, ya hear?! | „ |
~ Daruk's reaction to his dark copy. |
The Daruk Hollow is an entity that strongly resembles the goron Champion Daruk. It's found at the southeastern reaches of the forest, and takes up the same moveset as the normal one, but unlike Daruk himself, it cannot use Daruk's Protection to defend itself.
Should the real Daruk confront this entity, he will snap in anger at it and warns it not to ruin his reputation.
Revali Hollow[]
“ | Hm. He didn't just steal my good looks, but also my unparalleled talents! The nerve of this guy! | „ |
~ Revali's reaction to his dark copy. |
The Revali Hollow is an entity that strongly resembles the rito Champion Revali. It's tracked down at the northwestern reaches of the forest, and possesses the same moveset as the normal one, but since it could not use Revali's Gale, it instead relies on levitation to fly.
Should the real Revali confront this entity, he will be enraged and insulted at the fact that it stole both his appearance and talents.
Urbosa Hollow[]
“ | A fight against myself, hm? Good. Might be a decent challenge. | „ |
~ Urbosa's reaction to her dark copy. |
The Urbosa Hollow is an entity that strongly resembles the gerudo Champion Urbosa. It's discovered at the northeastern reaches of the forest, and owns the same moveset as the normal one, but it cannot use Urbosa's Fury to attack its foes.
Should the real Urbosa confront this entity, she will be slightly annoyed, but she will gladly call the fight against her doppelganger a decent challenge.
Link Hollow[]
The Link Hollow is an entity that strongly resembles the hylian Champion Link. It first appears when Astor sends it to attack Master Kohga and Sooga after betraying their clan. It uses the same moveset as the real Link yet cannot use Sword Beams at full health. Unlike the other Hollows, the Link Hollow is the only one who is slightly stronger than the others, and it's the default Hollow that Astor uses in later battles, including the EX The Yiga Clan Retreats, the EX Guardian of Remembrance, and The Future of Hyrule Scenarios.
The real Link is the only one who does not react to seeing his doppelganger when he confronts it.
