Headmistress Hope Haddon is the main antagonist of Season 3 of the British comedy series Sex Education.

She is Moordale's new headteacher and a former student at the school. At first, she presents herself as a cool, hip and understanding young woman who wants an easier experience for her students and to better the school's reputation. However, she slowly reveals her true nature as a manipulative, passive aggressive and sadistic control freak bent on bending the school and the students to her strict and rigid views on how education and school life should be.

She is played by Jemima Kirke.

Biography[]

Past[]

Little is known about Hope Haddon except that she was a student at Moordale. According to her introduction speech, the years she spent at Moordale were the best of her life. Then she became England's youngest headteacher, with astounding results in her former school. Moordale gained a reputation during the events of Season 2 for being overtly sexual in nature, and even received major media attention, resulting in the firing of her predecessor, Michael Groff. As a former student and qualified headteacher, she applied for the role in an attempt to turn the school around. She attempted to have a baby multiple times over the course of three years but had been unsuccessful.

Personal Life[]

Haddon is stated to have an unnamed husband, who is not present at any point throughout the show. He misses her IVF appointment as he is "working". In her conversations with her doctor she attempts to receive another round of IVF, but her physician advises her that it has not been long enough since her last round. In response, she demands to speak with another doctor for a second opinion. When the doctor suggests adoption she declares that she is not yet ready to give up having her own children.

By the end of Season 3, she is cleared for another round of IVF but states that her dreams will not come to fruition, as her body "won't do it", which indicates she may have some kind of genetic defect which prevents her from becoming pregnant. It becomes clear she blames herself for this, providing a rare insight into her motivations.

Time as Headteacher at Moordale[]

Hope Haddon began her position with an unconventional assembly for the students, in which she declared that she would be fun and progressive, and would attempt to clear the school's name. She then goes on to institute new changes at Moordale by painting over the school's many murals of phallic and yonic murals, which the students have given names such as "the wall of dicks". She also has the lockers repainted and institutes a new change to hallways, making all students walk in single file on either side of a yellow line. Rahim, a French exchange student, declares it is "never just a line", indicating there will be more, dire changes to come.

Haddon also begins her position by firing Head Boy, Jackson Marchetti, and replacing him with Vivienne Odusanya, who is more agreeable to her line in of thinking and helps her in transforming the school. When the media arrive at the school to interview Hope, however, she is embarrassed as a student runs through the school naked. She takes out her frustration at this situation by having an old set of toilets knocked down, much to the displeasure of some LGBTQ+ students.

Hope's next decree is to institute a new uniform policy, and she enforces it strictly. She informs anyone who wishes to even slightly alter the uniform that they will be punished, and forces them to change their looks and beliefs for her idea of a 'perfect school'. It is revealed that Hope has enormous pressure to change the school's public image, as the school board's investors are very near to withdrawing their money from the school.

Hope also institutes a new 'no questions' policy at the school. And threatens to fire any teacher who does not enforce it. This policy states that students cannot ask questions of their teachers, resulting in unrest among the student body as they attempt to understand topics they are being taught, particularly in their sexual education classes, without questioning anything. Students are also taught abstinence and encouraged to avoid condoms.

As the season continues, Hope finds out about various misdemeanors which have occurred in France, and that a student of Moordale has published a lude story to the media which results in more bad press. As a result of this, she institutes a new, tougher punishment system in which students are forced to hand their phones over, not be spoken to, and wear a sign which labels their crime around their neck. When students such as Rahim and Jackson speak out about this, they are suspended or told to be quiet.

In one final attempt to save the school's reputation, Hope grabs a student and locks them in a classroom, in an attempt to save face.

Downfall[]

Hope's downfall comes when, on the Open Night she hosts in an attempt to change the media and community's perception of her school, the students revolt. Vivienne and Jackson begin working together with the assistance of most of the student body to construct a new, secret open night in which they will embrace sex and preach it to prospective students, in front of the media. When her presentation is hijacked by the students, Hope attacks Otis and Eric who are showing a video of the students dressed as rude items (such as vulvas, penises, and sex toys) and stops the video, but is ultimately defeated by Ruby who sprays perfume in her eyes. Part of the auditorium collapses and it is revealed that Hope had attempted to lock a student in a classroom. The media report live on the situation at Moordale, inspiring schools across Britain to revolt in a similar manner. Hope is forced to resign as a result of her actions, and the school is sold as all investors pull funding. The fate of Moordale's students is left hanging in the balance at the end of the third season.

Hope’s final appearance is at the hospital wheee talked to Otis (while visiting his mother Jean after her baby arrived) about her attempts on having a baby for three years with her husband, but kept failing and pro-claiming herself as a failure, but Otis warms her up and becomes grateful for his words, Otis’ mother Jean comes and Hope congratulates her, and can be seen still crying while looking at her papers, (possible after hearing Jean’s new baby). It is unknown what happens to her afterwards, but her attempts on having a baby with her husband is still probably on going.

Personality[]

Hope is a charming person, with a lot of charisma. She was instantly loved by all of the students when she introduced herself to the school. Because of her concern's regarding Moordale's reputation, she chose to implement new reforms to choke on the student's freedom by forcing them to wear uniforms, ban jewels, hair coloring, and painting over every form of art that was done in the past. Her intentions lie solely with creating a brighter future for the student's of Moordale, however her methods conflict with the way the school functions.

She is shown many times to be extremely manipulative, and when her personal problems got heavier and heavier, she publicly humiliates Lily, Cal and Adam, in an attempt to stop the students of Moordale from continuing their rebellious behavior.

Despite everything she did, she does genuinely seem to care about the school's reputation, and her actions are clearly motivated by her fear and insecurities over the fact that she may not ever get to be a parent. She also isn't completely heartless as she does genuinely see Maeve's talents and was more than happy to try and secure funds for her to travel to a prestigious school in America and is genuine in her apology for this being refused by the school board. Furthermore she confides to Otis regarding her problems with conceiving and how much she truly hates herself and appears grateful for the kind words he leaves her worth, her congratulations to Jean for the birth of her new child also suggests that she possibly isn't completely beyond redemption.

Trivia[]

  • Despite being the main antagonist of the third season of Sex Education, Hope is far more evil and much worse than her predecessor, Michael Groff. This is because Groff only treated students poorly, mostly his son Adam, to vent his anger for his own abusive father's mistreatment towards him when he was a child, favoring only his older brother Peter over him, and had redeemable traits whereas Hope ruled Moordale with an iron fist out of pure greed and selfishness with retrograde methods in order to save the school's reputation and preventing the investors from pulling out the funds. However, just like Groff, Hope was also against the sex topic but also had some redeemable traits when it was revealed that she has been trying to have a child for three years but failed every time, something that has been affecting her marriage with her husband.
  • Hope is the only antagonist of Sex Education not to have a redemption.
  • It is currently unlike Hope will return for the fourth and final season.
