Horatio Chau is a minor antagonist in the AMC series Into the Badlands.
He was the very first Baron, making him the creator of the oppressive and ruthless systems that exist in the Badlands. He was the founder of the Fox Territory, making him the original operator of the Cog slave trade. He is the ancestor of Juliet and Gaius Chau.
Personality[]
While not much of Horatio's personality it known due to him not directly appearing on-screen, he would have been extremely violent and merciless as he was the individual who established the systems of the Badlands, a society completely founded on violence. His motto was stated to be "No mercy" and he was depicted as acting this way in battle during the theater show of him.
Biography[]
At some point in the near future, humanity experimented with drawing power from the Earth, causing a catastrophic disaster which wiped out all modern societies. The great cities of the world fell into ruin, and the remaining humans became scavengers, regressing society into a time of medieval violence. Several individuals fought for control of the broken world, with Horatio Chau being the victor. He was the greatest fighter in all of the lands, and thus rose to the top of society, and founded the Fox Territory. He would then create the Cog slave trade, a human labor force that kept his territory in power even as other Territories and Barons were founded. His territory would exist for 500 years, with his Baron status being passed down to his descendants, including Alexander Chau and Juliet Chau. On the thirteenth birthday of his descendant Gaius Chau, a puppet theater show would be put on of Horatio and his rise to power as the first Baron, although Gaius did not fully enjoy it, as he disliked his families sadistic nature.
Powers & Abilities[]
- Martial Arts/Swordsmanship: Horatio Chau was described as the most skilled warrior to exist in his time period, skilled enough in combat for him to defeat all other great warriors and become the first Baron of the Badlands.
- Leadership: Despite his brutal ways, Horatio was able to forge a society out of an apocalyptic wasteland, showing a great ability to lead others despite the disorder present in the Badlands after the end of modern society.
Trivia[]
- Despite the Clippers of the Fox Territory being depicted as better with crossbows than in close range combat, Horatio Chau is never shown using one.
