Villains Wiki

For uncountable eons, I have spread across the galaxies like a virus, conquering 10,000 worlds to hone my Horde. And on every planet, there has always been a hero...The one. The champion. Each has inevitably come to this same moment, stalwart in the belief you are all that stands between the freedom of your people or the systematic subjugation under the Horde Empire. Each of you is so sure you're not only going to fight me, but that you might even triumph as well. And ultimately, each of you always discovers I never do my own fighting. I hire well.
~ Hordak's monologue.

Hordak is the overarching antagonist of Masters of the Universe: Revelation and the secondary antagonist of its sequel series Masters of the Universe: Revolution. He is the leader of the Evil Horde and Skeletor's former master.

He is voiced by Keith David, who also voiced Dr. Facilier in The Princess and the Frog, Thel 'Vadam in the Halo video game franchise, Big Tim in Requiem for a Dream, Tublat in The Legend of Tarzan, Thailog in the Gargoyles series, Streaming in Regular Show, Malcolm Kane in Stretch Armstrong & the Flex Fighters, Julius Little as well as Himself in the Saints Row series, Atlas in Teen Titans, Lord Marmoo in Kulipari: Army of Frogs, Thrull in The Last Kids on Earth, Dr. Tenma in Pluto and King Andrias in Amphibia.

Personality[]

Hordak is a cruel and cold-hearted warlord, caring nothing for honor or fair play, only power. He has great trust in his minions, which is why he lets them fight on his behalf in every challenge. Since Hordak's greatest strength lies in technology, he has little faith or regard for magic, seeing it as nothing more than a trick, though Skeletor claims he simply doesn't understand it.

Despite his cunning mind and intelligence, Hordak severely underestimated his pawn, Skeletor, and his equal thirst for power. During the battle, Hordak never considered Skeletor his equal due to having been his master, which ultimately led to them being overpowered by Skeletor's combined mastery of magic and technology. Enraged by the event, Hordak regretted not having left Skeletor to die on the island where he had found him.

Powers, Abilities & Equipment[]

  • Master Fighter: As Supreme Leader of the Horde, and though he rarely fights himself, Hordak is a formidable fighter, having taught Skeletor everything he knew about the art of combat.
  • Master Tactician and Leadership: Hordak is a seasoned warlord, having conquered many worlds through his ruthless war strategies. He was able to take control of Eternia by deceiving the people through trickery that mixed reality and deceit.
  • Superhuman Strength: Hordak is the Horde's strongest warrior, easily able to overpower a Skeletor amplified by Motherboard's nanotechnology.
  • Nanotech Armor: Hordak's battle armor is equipped with nanotechnology that can transform his hands into plasma cannons and his legs into thrusters. It also features integrated cloaking technology and the ability to increase the user's speed to the speed of sound.

Biography[]

Although not making any physical appearances or being mentioned in Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Hordak turns out to be the mastermind behind the cult of Motherboard by the end of the second part. His most significant action is the enslavement of Skeletor as the latter attempted to destroy the robotic statue which not only proved unresponsive to its magic before transforming into a winged humanoid and infecting Skeletor with robotic material, while leaving displaying a hologram depicting Hordak.

Hordak subsequently appears physically in Masters of the Universe: Revolution. His army invades Eternia after sending Skeletor in the guise of Keldor, Randor's older half-brother to take the place of king of Eternos following Randor's recent death. It is later revealed that many years before, Hordak rescued Keldor from exile on a warring island and took him in as a protégé until he gave him the Havoc Staff, transforming Keldor into Skeletor in the process. Hordak subsequently abandoned Skeletor who had just been captured by the Royal Guard during the attempted kidnapping of the King and Queen's children, with Hordak making Skeletor forget his life as Keldor as well as their meeting.

Skeletor would eventually find his memories erased and drunk with rage at having been and still being a pawn, kills Motherboard and confronts Hordak in a brutal fight in the royal palace. Hordak gains the upper hand thanks to his superior knowledge of technology but Skeletor ends up submit him by combining his Havoc magic and the technological mutation he has undergone. As Skeletor mocks Hordak's inability to understand magic, Hordak states that he should have left him to die on the island a long time ago, calling him Keldor one last time before Skeletor forever disowns his old name and stabs Hordak in the chest. Hordak survived, placed in a healing chamber by a loyalist warrior promising him that when he recovers, they will get rid of Skeletor and He-Man.

Quotes[]

Hordak: You left yourself open, Acolyte. I could have easily killed you.
Keldor: Oh, what's the point of this? I'll never win against you. You're too strong for me.
Hordak: Fighting me is how you get stronger. Before you can accomplish your goal, you will have to battle foes at least as capable as I am.
Keldor: But how will this help me take back my kingdom? I thought I was going to learn to use magic.
Hordak: You will. But never forget, magic is a cheat. Of use from time to time, yes, but it will never make you strong. The might of the Horde was built with technology. And he who masters technology masters the universe.
The Horde will never follow you. Not until you fully embrace your power. Take it! [...] Ha'vok is an ancient, powerful magic that has lain dormant, waiting for someone who was born to wield such power. Waiting for you. Take it and unlock your destiny. Take it. Take it and be reborn into the ravenous maw of Ha'vok!
You've proven your mettle, Mistress Motherboard. After years of failed attempts with miserable magic to blame, it was technology that finally triumphed to win me this world.
Hordak: I'd forgotten the stink of this place. It's absolutely wretched.
Skeletor: Perhaps this small token of my esteem will take your mind off it, my eminence.
Hordak: Whatever gift you have to offer will only pale in comparison to the bountiful banquet of complete conquest finally won for me by Motherboard. Huh. I've given you the technological power, yet you remain quite literally attached to that arcane talisman.
Skeletor: The Havoc Staff, once held, is not so easily discarded. That's why you cursed Keldor with it all those years ago. But even though you took the truth from me, I should thank you.
Heads will roll, Acolyte. And soon, you will learn what all the universe will come to know...I am Hordak, conquest incarnate. So let this be our final battle!
Hordak: And so the worm turns.
Skeletor: Oh, that worm turned when you made that metal maiden your right hand instead of me.
Hordak: Motherboard was merely an extension of my hand, a tool of the Horde, just like you.
Skeletor: You're the only tool here. And now, your fate is in my hand!
Hordak: Everything you know, I taught you, Acolyte, so there's no move you can make I haven't already anticipated.
Hordak: You're a fool if you think you can beat me with my own technology. I am as much its master as I am yours.
Skeletor: This is Eternia. Technology is only half the battle.
Hordak: No!
Skeletor: You hate magic because you don't understand it. That's why you've always needed an acolyte to wield magic on your behalf. You used to know that, but you forgot it. And while the Havoc Staff showed me how to tap into dark magic, it's not the only source of power in the universe.
Hordak: I should have left you to die on that filthy island, Keldor.
Skeletor: My name is...Skeletor!

Trivia[]

  • The fight between Hordak and Skeletor and its outcome indirectly references the unproduced third season of the 2002 series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, where Skeletor would have eventually overthrown Hordak.
  • Hordak's outfit in flashbacks is similar to his Minicomics counterpart's outfit from 1985-1987.
