~ Mr. Grizz on the Horrorboros |
The Horrorboros are supporting antagonists in the video game Splatoon 3, being a major antagonist in the Salmon Run Next Wave. It is a type of King Salmonid, a faction of monstrous Salmonids who rule over their lesser counterparts and only emerge from the ocean to deal with large threats to their kin, such as particularly active Grizzco egg collectors. During Big Runs, the Horrorboros and its counterparts will also emerge leading the Salmonid charge on Splatsville.
Appearance[]
The Horrorboros is a titanic, slender, Eastern dragon-like Salmonid that possesses pupil-less, bulging yellow eyes. As a King Salmonid its scales are also iridescent. It has two yellow thunderbolt shaped fins resembling horns and wears green pants connected to its body via metal straps. Inside its mouth, it possesses a black pan-like device that has tubes extending into its gullet. Said device is connected to alligator clips that attach to its body via pads, which in turn connect to lantern-like buoys strung across its body, which light up when it roars or charges its attack. The bombs the Horrorboros throws appear to be green plastic bags with the Salmonid emblem on them.
Gameplay[]
Trigerring[]
As a King Salmonid, the Horrorboros gradually picks up the scent of active Grizzco workers who frequent its turf, as indicated by the Salm-o-meter in the Salmon Run HUD, with the chance of a King Salmonid spawning increasing as the total meter gauge of each Salmon Run team is increased. Whether a Horrorboros or Cohozuna arrives during an Xtra wave is indicated by the Salm-o-meter’s shape, switching from the previously random mechanic that decided the King Salmonid.
Attacks[]
Unlike the Cohozuna the Horrorboros possesses a singular attack: its Booyah Bomb which it launches from its mouth. The bomb charges in a similar manner to the Steelhead's own bomb which when unleashed will splat any players in mere seconds and ink huge parts of turf. The bomb can be targeted while it charges, dealing huge amounts of damage to the Horrorboros when completely inked but retaining the amount of player ink it's covered in upon regenerating.
Strategy[]
While the Horrorboros possesses more health than its counterpart the Cohozuna, it is much more passive and thanks to its large hitbox, can be damaged from nearly any part of the map. Furthermore, while the bombs Horrorboros throws cover huge amounts of area and deal high damage, they also function as a weak point. As such, players with high DPS weapons such as the Hydra Splatling or with powerful Specials like the Crab Tank should focus their attacks on the Horrorboros' bombs, while other players can focus on collecting Golden Eggs and firing them at the weak point when opportune. As the bomb also has 2,500 HP which is indivisible by the Egg Cannon's 400 damage, it's advised for players to deal the final blow with regular weapons instead.
Trivia[]
- The Horrorboros' name is a portmanteau of horror, referencing its terrifying appearance & shriek, and ouroboros, a symbol of rebirth depicting a serpentine creature (sometimes a dragon) devouring its own tail.
- Furthermore its somewhat mechanical nature and its seeming ability to manipulate electricity may be inspired by the electric eel.
- The Horrorboros possesses the second most HP of any Salmonid enemy at a maximum of 55,000, beaten by the Megalodontia which has 10,000 more HP.
- The scream the Horrorboros emits in its intro has received notoriety thanks to its eeriness, which many fans remark call to mind the analog horror-style Big Run fan videos that were popular at the time.
- The scream's electronic effect, combined with the fact that the Horrorboros's lanterns glow as it attacks or roars, imply that it may be somewhat mechanical or at least produce biolelectricity.
