Hosea Matthews is the overarching protagonist of the 2018 western action-adventure video game Red Dead Redemption II, serving as the tritagonist in the first 4 chapters.
He is the right-hand man and best friend of Dutch van der Linde and the co-leader and co-founder of the Van der Linde gang. He is also the mentor of Arthur Morgan and John Marston. Hosea served as the voice of reason within the gang, and did his utmost best to try and keep Dutch, and in turn the others, on a better path, away from turning truly down the path of evil.
He was portrayed by Curzon Dobell.
Biography[]
Born and raised in the mountains, Hosea Matthews was once a stage actor with dreams of becoming a comedian. Alas, he fell into a life of crime and became a conman. In the 70s, he attempted to con Dutch van der Linde, only to realise Dutch had also stolen from him. They decided to team up and later unofficially adopted an unruly teenager named Arthur Morgan together, the first member of what would be later known as the Van der Linde gang. However, a failed ferry robbery in 1899 led to the gang being forced to flee to the mountains.
The gang eventually relocates to Horseshoe Overlook. Hosea invites Arthur to go hunting with him and later enlists Arthur's help to help him steal a stagecoach from a rancher. When their cover is blown, Dutch moves the gang east to Clemens Point.
While en route to a fishing spot, Dutch, Arthur and Hosea meet Sheriff Leigh Gray and his deputy Archibald McGregor, who have arrested a gang known as the Anderson boys and Josiah Trelawny. Dutch introduces himself to Gray under a fake name and the Andersons escape. Arthur helps capture them and Trelawny is freed as thanks.
After the gang steal moonshine from the Lemoyne Raiders, Arthur and Hosea meet with Catherine Braithwaite and offer to sell it back to her, but she orders them to sell it at the local saloon. Having Arthur pose as his mute brother, Hosea sells the moonshine to the bar but has to flee when Lemoyne Raiders attack. Hosea and Dutch then scheme to play the Grays and Braithwaites against each other until they both collapse so the gang can steal their fortunes.
Their scheme horribly blows up in their faces as Sean MacGuire is killed and young Jack Marston kidnapped. Hosea joins the rest of the gang's men in raiding Braithwaite Manor and they learn that he is being held by proto-mafia boss Angelo Bronte in Saint Denis, forcing the gang to relocate nearby there.
After Arthur and John Marston perform a favour for Bronte, he releases Jack back to them and even invites them to the mayor's gala. At the gala, Hosea gains leads on the city bank and a riverboat while on Bronte's advice, Dutch decides to raid the local trolley station. The trolley station is revealed to be a setup with little money and cops swarming them. Dutch, Lenny and Arthur fight their way out and against Hosea's advice, Dutch leads the gang to raid Bronte's mansion and kill him.
The gang then robs the Saint Denis bank, Hosea setting off an explosion to distract police officers. However, mid-robbery, Pinkerton detectives, led by Agent Andrew Milton, capture Hosea and bring him in front of the bank. When Dutch refuses to surrender himself and threatens to execute hostages, Milton spitefully shoots Hosea. Enraged, the gang starts firing at the Pinkertons but are outgunned and forced to flee to the rooftops and then on an outbound ship.
With Hosea dead, Micah Bell became Dutch's primary counsel and led him to perform erratic actions that alienated him from Arthur and contributed in the gang's downfall.
