Hostage #4 is a minor antagonist in Threat Level Midnight, the in-universe film from The Office (U.S.). They made their first appearance in the episode “Threat Level Midnight” (Season 7, Episode 17) and are one of the hostages taken by the villain Goldenface during the hockey arena standoff.
He is portaged by Paul Lieberstain (Toby Flenderson in the fiction), who also plays Fred Trolleycar in Song Of Back And Neck.
Biography[]
In Threat Level Midnight, written, directed, and starring Michael Scott as Agent Michael Scarn, Hostage #4 appears during the tense hockey arena hostage scene, where Goldenface (Jim Halpert) threatens to blow up the stadium during the All-Star Game.
Michael, narrating the film within The Office, identifies Hostage #4 as one of the “bad guys,” claiming, “He was an animal violator.” In the scene, Goldenface shoots Hostage #4 execution-style, an over-the-top moment intended to show his ruthlessness. However, to the audience of The Office, it reads as Michael’s petty revenge fantasy — gleefully “killing off” Toby’s character for comedic satisfaction.
Hostage #4’s death shocks the other characters (and mildly disturbs the office staff watching the film), but it ultimately motivates Scarn to defeat Goldenface and save the day.
Personality[]
Hostage #4 is portrayed as nervous, timid, and pathetically helpless, embodying the archetype of a background victim in an action movie. However, Michael’s labeling of him as an “animal violator” reframes him — in Michael’s eyes — as secretly evil.
His demeanor suggests no villainous intent, highlighting how arbitrary and biased Michael’s script is. Within the meta context of The Office, Hostage #4’s “villain” status is a reflection of Michael Scott’s intense, (somewhat understandable) hatred toward Toby.
