~ The achievement for the Ender Dragon's defeat, meaning the dragon's existence wasn't a good thing. |
Hostile Mobs, also known as Monsters or Evil Mobs, are the main antagonists of the sandbox survival video game franchise Minecraft.
They are a group of dangerous and aggressive monsters found all over the Minecraft world that serve as a consistent source of danger for players, pets and, in some cases, other mobs. Zombies, Skeletons, Creepers, Spiders, Endermen, Witches, Slimes, Phantoms, and zombified Piglins are some of the most common Hostile Mobs.
The Ender Dragon herself is a major antagonist in the Minecraft franchise, appearing in games, books, merchandise, and other forms of media. She's also (arguably) one of the most recognizable antagonists ever made. Her most prominent appearance is in Minecraft, the franchise's first installment, as the game's main antagonist, though she doesn't chase the player until they come to her dimension, the End.
Most of the mobs' behavior is straightforward, chasing any player on sight until one of them dies or gets away.
Some mobs only attack under certain circumstances. For instances, spiders will attack at night, while Piglins attack any player who isn't wearing golden armor.
There's a special group of hostile mobs called the Illagers, but they should be explained separately.
Overview[]
Hostile mobs refer to NPCs in Minecraft that are actively or passively hostile to the player and, in some cases, friendly NPCs - Villagers, in the case of zombies. They are some of the most common and dangerous obstacles in the game, and are a constant threat for those playing in Survival mode on any difficulty beyond Peaceful.
The spawn mechanics of hostile mobs differ between the types of mobs, but most of them only spawn in places devoid of neither sunlight or artificial light ("Block Light"), and thus often appear either at night or in caves, dungeons, and fortresses. Undead mobs like Zombies and Skeletons burst into flame and die in sunlight, with the exceptions of undead with helmets and Husks; however, most mobs do not burn in daylight. Thus, the best way to avoid hostiles mobs is to travel during the daytime and keep important areas well-lit with torches and other light sources (though this doesn't apply to all mobs).
In most cases, hostile mobs won't attack each other, and will even attack ingroup, being much more of a challenge to all players. However, some can hurt each other by getting caught in their line of fire. Some will even attack each other, such as when a Skeleton accidentally hits another skeleton with its arrows.
Most Hostile mobs will attack any player or pet that either gets too close or catches their attention, after which they will relentlessly attack them until they die, their target dies, or their target runs far enough away. They can also destroy players' property and kill nearby farm animals, either by blowing things up (in the case of Creepers/The Wither), setting things on fire (Blazes, Ghasts, etc.), or simply taking/moving blocks (Endermen, though their ability to do this is limited to a few blocks), although property damage caused by hostile mobs is always incidental, not intentional. A few mobs such as The Wither, Zoglins, and "Johnny" Vindicators, (that is, a Vindicator given the name "Johnny" via a nametag), will indiscriminately attack any and all mobs except, in regards to Zoglins and "Johnny" Vindicators, their own kind.
Overall, the hostile mobs remain a constant threat to players throughout the entire game, regardless of skill or equipment.
Powers and Abilities[]
Hostile Mobs possess varying abilities. This is a general list of their powers and abilities:
- Absorption: some Hostile Mobs can absorb lightning. If lightning strikes a Creeper, the Creeper will absorb it, and the Creeper will transform into the Charged Creeper (but it will still take damage from the lighting). Also, passive mobs (Villagers and Pigs) can absorb lightning and transform into hostile mobs (Witches and Zombified Piglins).
- Alchemy: Witches are masters of alchemy since they use potions to attack and defend.
- Archery: some Hostile Mobs (Skeletons, Strays, Pillagers, Illusioners, and Piglins) uses a bow and crossbow as a weapon to kill the player and other mobs. Their hitting rate is dependent upon the game's difficulty.
- Aquatic respiration: some Hostile Mobs can live without oxygen (live underwater) like Elder Guardians, Guardians, and Drowned.
- Building: Endermen can unintentionally build things with blocks they pick up.
- Damage immunity: Shulkers are invincible when their shells are closed. The Wither is temporarily invincible when it is first summoned and is immune to arrows once it loses half its health. Endermen cannot be harmed by projectiles.
- Dark vision: all mobs can see their target in pitch darkness, except the warden, who is blind and relies on hearing.
- Duplication: Illusioners can make four false duplicates of themselves, while they themselves turn invisible.
- Fall damage immunity: some Hostile Mobs don't take damage when they fall: Blazes, Chicken Jockeys, Ender Dragons, Ghasts, Magma Cubes, Vexes, and Withers.
- Fighting skills: some Hostile Mobs attack the player unarmed, such as Zombies, Spiders, Cave Spiders, Slimes and Magma Cubes.
- Fire Immunity: some Hostile Mobs (usually the Nether mobs) are resistant to fire like Zombified Piglins, Magma Cubes, Ghasts, Zoglins, the Ender Dragon, and the Wither. Also, Witches are immune to fire when they drink the Potion of Fire Resistance.
- Flight: flight is an uncommon ability for Hostile Mobs. Ghasts, the Ender Dragon, the Wither, Blazes, Phantoms, and Vexes can all fly.
- Explosions: the Creeper is famous for its ability to explode, and Ghasts can fire explosive fireballs from their mouths. The Wither causes a massive detonation shortly after its summoning and fires exploding skull missiles.
- Horsemanship: some Hostile Mobs can ride horses or other animals. Skeletons can ride the Skeleton Horses, and Zombies can ride Zombie Horses. Baby zombies and Zombified Piglins can ride chickens.
- High Jumping: some Hostile Mobs can jump high, such as Magma Cubes, Killer Bunnies, and Slimes.
- Infestation: silverfishes can "infest" random stone blocks, spilling out of them when broken. Zombies can infest villages by turning Villagers into zombies, creating a zombie village.
- Infliction: A Hostile Mob can inflict a status effect on another mob (not only via potions).
- Husks inflict the Hunger status effect on their targets, causing afflicted player a crave for food.
- Strays inflict the Slowness status effect on their targets, slowing their movement speed.
- Elder Guardians inflict the Mining Fatigue status effect on the player when the player swims near them, slowing down their ability to break blocks.
- Illusioners inflict the Blindness status effect on their targets, causing the player's view to turn pitch-black except for a tiny visibility radius.
- Cave Spiders inflict the Poison status effect on their targets, slowly reducing the player's health but stopping at half a heart.
- Withers and Wither Skeletons inflict the Wither status effect on their targets, which is similar to Poison except it can harm undead mobs and can kill.
- Shulkers inflict the Levitation status effect on their targets, causing them to slowly float up into the air until the effect disappears, at which point victims brutally fall to the ground.
- When the player kills the raid captain of the Illagers, they will get the Bad Omen status effect, which starts a raid when the player enters any populated village in said village.
- Invisibility: sometimes, Spiders can spawn with the invisibility effect. Also, Illusioners can become invisible during combat.
- Large Size: some Hostile Mobs are large, such as full-grown Slimes, Ghasts, the Elder Guardian, Ravagers, and the Wither. The Ender Dragon is the largest mob of them all. Giants also exist in the game's code, though these are simply scaled-up Zombies with no AI.
- Laser Vision: Guardians and Elder Guardians can attack with lasers from their eyes.
- Levitation: Ghasts, Phantoms, Blazes, Vexes, the Ender Dragon, and the Wither can levitate. Shulkers can inflict players with uncontrolled Levitation, which while harmless by itself, can be lethal when the effect wears off, as victims are likely to fall to their death.
- Magic: Magic is also a common power for the Hostile Mobs, especially for Witches.
- Witches attack players by throwing potions of Harming or Poison, and will drink potions of Fire Resistance, Water Breathing, Swiftness, and Healing to aid themselves in battle.
- Spiders can spawn with some magical effects like Regeneration, Speed, Strength, and Invisibility.
- Evokers and Illusioners are Illager spellcasters- Evokers can summon Vexes and snapping Fangs that burst from the ground, and Illusioners can turn invisible and create false duplicates of themselves. Evokers can also change the color of a sheep's wool from red to blue.
- Zombies, Skeletons, and Piglins can spawn with magical armor and weapons, and gain the benefits from those enchantments.
- Ender Dragons can breathe harmful acid.
- Withers can shoot explosive, poisonous skulls.
- Blazes and Ghasts can use fire.
- Marksmanship: The marksmanship of mobs with ranged weapons depends upon difficulty. In addition, Ghasts and Blazes shoot fireballs at the player, Shulkers shoot their bullets, and the Drowned can throw their Trident at the player if they have one.
- Physical Destruction: Endermen can pick up blocks, and zombie variants can break doors. Creeper and Wither explosions destroy blocks around them, and Blaze/Ghast fireballs can burn flammable blocks.
- Poison Resistance: Undeads, Spiders, Cave Spiders, Ender Dragons, Withers, and Witches are immune to poison.
- Pyrokinesis: Some Hostile Mobs can set things on fire- for instance, both Blazes and Ghasts can shoot fireballs at the player, with the latter exploding, as well as ignite.
- Regeneration: The Ender Dragon can regenerate their health via End Crystals. Withers can gain their health back if they are damaged. And the Spiders can spawn with the Regeneration effect.
- Stealth: A few mobs do not or barely make a sound.
- Creepers are silent until they get close enough to the target when they hiss and explode.
- Wardens can appear from the ground.
- Superhuman Agility/Strength/Speed/Durability: There are a lot of Hostile Mobs that are very fast, agile, strong, and durable.
- Killer Bunnies are very fast.
- Spiders and Cave Spiders are very agile.
- Ravagers and boss mobs are very strong.
- The Giant is very durable, though again, it doesn’t do anything.
- Zombies variants can break doors.
- The warden can one-shot a fully-armored player from full health.
- Swimming: Almost every Hostile Mob can swim, with some Hostile Mobs like Drowned, Guardians, and Elder Guardians swimming very well. Endermen and Blazes get hurt if they stand in water.
- Melee Weapon Use: Many Hostile Mobs spawn with melee weapons and use them in combat. They can also pick up weapons/shields on the ground but cannot use shields:
- Piglins carry either gold swords or crossbows and can use both.
- Piglin Brutes use golden axes.
- Zombified piglins use golden swords.
- Wither Skeletons use stone swords.
- Vindicators use iron axes.
- Vexes use iron swords.
- Also, Zombies (including babies), Skeletons, and their variants can spawn with swords, axes, and shovels.
- Teleportation: Endermen's primary power is teleportation. They can teleport anywhere. Also, Endermites can teleport after their spawn, and Shulkers will teleport when on low health.
- Transformation/Undying: Some mobs can turn into different mobs when certain conditions are met. For example: If a Husk drowns in water, it will become a Zombie, and if a Zombie drowns, it will become a Drowned. A zombie villager can transform into a villager when cured. Slimes and Magma cubes will split into multiple smaller-sized copies once killed until they reach the smallest size.
- Wall-Crawling: Spiders and Cave Spiders can climb vertical surfaces without falling.
- Zombification: Zombies and their variants can turn Villagers into Zombies by attacking them (except in Easy mode).
Weaknesses[]
Hostile Mobs have weaknesses as well, allowing the player to defeat them strategically.
- Sunlight: Zombies, Zombie Villagers, Drowned, Skeletons, Strays and Phantoms will burn when they are caught by sunlight and Creepers, Spiders, Witches and other overworld hostile mobs will despawn from the surface afterwards. Piglins, Piglin Brutes, and Hoglins cannot survive in the Overworld or The End, and they'll become Zombified Piglins and Zoglins respectively after several seconds.
- Water: Endermen and Blazes hate water and take damage from it. When water touches them, Endermen will teleport and Blaze will try to escape.
- Drowning: Most Hostile Mobs will drown when they stay underwater (except Undead Mobs, Guardians and Elder Guardians).
- Fire/Lava: Most Hostile Mobs will burn when they exposed are to it, save for mobs found in the Nether (Blazes, Wither Skeletons, Magma Cubes, Zombified Piglins, Ghasts, Zoglins).
- Suffocation: If trapped inside a solid block, such as being crushed via a piston or buried in sand/gravel, mobs will suffocate and die, even the mobs who can breathe in water.
- Falling: Mobs that cannot levitate will die when dropped from high enough (save for chicken jockeys)
- Falling blocks: Falling anvils and dripstone can easily kill most mobs if dropped from high enough.
- Magic: Mobs are vulnerable to potions and enchantments, though undead mobs are vulnerable to different potions (healing instead of harming like the other mobs).
- Tameable creatures: Skeletons will always be eaten by wolves as wolves eat bones. Cats scare creepers away. Parrots imitate the noise of hostile mobs coming nearby.

Piglins (Minecraft Legends)[]
- Main article: Piglins
In Minecraft Legends, the Piglins have invaded the Overworld to corrupt it with their influence from the Nether. Under the leadership of the Great Hog, Piglin society split into three distinct hordes that have their cultures and methods to attack and defend. These hordes are the Horde of the Bastion, Horde of the Spore, and Horde of the Hunt.
Victims[]
Whenever the player creates a new world, they spawn in a very mysterious and lonely infinite world, which is very uninhabitable due to the hostile mobs, and will proceed to kill every player they see. Some of their victims are the player's pets, or some are all of the past humans or society in the world. Below is a list of their possible victims:
- Countless humans (possibly)
- Countless mobs (caused by the Wither)
- The Player(s) (Hardcore Mode)
- Wolves, or foxes (when they are provoked)
- Dyed Cat (possibly)
- Endermen (caused by the Ender Dragon)
- Endermites (Caused by endermen)
- Numerous villagers (can be caused by zombies, creepers, and illagers)
- Iron Golems (only if they attack or come close to it)
- Snow Golems (only if they attack or come close to it)
- Furnace Golems (only if they attack or come close to it)
- Melon Golems (only if they attack or come close to it)
- Numerous passive mobs/animals (indirectly, or by Wither)
- Flora (by creepers)
- Mob of Me (possibly)
- Herobrine (possibly)
Theories[]
As the game lacks in-game lore, Notch, Jeb, and the rest of the Mojang developers stated that they will never add any specific lore to the game to sustain Minecraft's mysterious and atmospheric setting, and that players (or people) are free to wonder about the game's lore. However, here are some possible known theories regarding about the hostile mobs (monsters):
- The Hostile Mobs' motives for killing the player multiple times in Survival mode are utterly unknown, due to the fact that the game lacks official lore from the developers. However, many theories that explain it.
- One, they are brainwashed creatures that are being controlled by an omnipotent being, programmed to kill the player in the surrounding dimensions they're in.
- Another theory is that they are just simply evil creatures that attack and kill any players, or other mobs for no reason, and it is all just fun and games for them. Or that the player did something horribly wrong in the past and the hostile mobs are never going to forgive them for their wrongdoings.
- The third theory is that the hostile mobs simply do not welcome any players or villagers in all three dimensions (Overworld, Nether, and The End), and that all of them were trespassers, and will do anything to get them out of the way, if by means attacking or killing every single one of them.
- The fourth and possible main theory is that the hostile mobs are represented as the player's biggest fears, being the bullies, the enemies, and the darkness inside the player's dream, and that the player must overcome them to overcome their biggest fears, given the fact that the game eventually mirrors real life. The fourth theory is possibly more believable by other people, due to the belief that the game was all just a dream, and that the hostile mobs are all the manifestations of the players' fears. However, the End Poem is the closest thing that explains their existence in the game.
- But as of now, there are no real reasons as to why the hostile mobs are hostile against players.
- The Ender Dragon can be considered the main antagonist of the original game's End level (or the entire game as a whole), and she is also somewhat behind in the disc 11 story, as the dragon may have ordered endermen to subsequently kill the player. However, the dragon only appears in the endgame or the final stage of the game, this leads to an explanation of why the player's final goal in Survival mode, is to kill the Ender Dragon. This leads to an explanation that the dragon may have corrupted past humans into endermen. Popular opinions also show that the dragon somewhat represents the darkness and the biggest and last fear in the player's dream. Killing the dragon is also required to open the gateway back to the overworld, and then the player can optionally read the End poem.
- Even though the Ender Dragon is the first boss added in the game, it is revealed that she is also the final boss in the game, due to her being located only in the End, which is stated to be the game's "finale".
- The hostile mobs may also seem evil at first, but all of them had been considered by many to have a terrible backstory and why they are considered as one of the most tragic enemies in the franchise. Some theories or facts hint their tragic past, one notable example is that Herobrine or (possibly) the Wither is behind in the creation of them.
- For example, The Zombies, Skeletons, and other humanoid hostile mobs, were past humans, creepers always appear with a frown face, and the rest were all seem to just confused and scared only of the environment, even endermen had a secret message in their languages. Additionally, Illagers (as stated in the Mobestiary) were exiled and expelled from villages.
- Currently, the hostile mobs' backstory was not mentioned officially, but several theories their terrible past, but all hostile mobs are considered misanthropes, as they always attack and kill the player, which are the only humans of the game. One possible theory is that they may only be afraid of humans.
Trivia[]
- They are arguably the most enigmatic and darkest enemies of the entire franchise, as well as one of the most enigmatic video game enemies/characters in video game history. They have a very mysterious history that is vaguely even explained, making their background slightly even more terrifying to most players. Their existence may also possibly play an important role in why all humanity had banished before the main game's premise, making the Minecraft world feel more threatened, and even most players, passive or neutral mobs, fear them (mostly villagers), even though they are pretty mysterious. Overall, they are considered as real threats to all Minecraft players and all mobs, as they will try harder to make the player more miserable than what they think, and will repeatedly torture them for fun in both Survival and Hardcore mode.
- Even though one of the most iconic enemies/characters in video game culture, they were hated and sometimes loved by many people.
- One common thing the hostile mobs are hated for, is the way most players see them as their biggest threats and main enemies in the game, sometimes pointing them as very annoying, as the mobs always foil every player's goals.
- One more thing they are hated, is the way they interact with the player, they don't stop killing them unless the player fights them back, or how they indirectly destroy/vandalizes the player's property, and sometimes they also indirectly kill any player-owned pets once provoked. Since then, most players always target the hostile mobs as their biggest enemies in the game, and their repetitive appearances made players complain about them.
- Since the iconic title came to rise, most common hostile mobs began to receive more love and more recognition as some people otherwise call their merchandise 'cute' and worth buying.
- Despite being easy to defeat and having terrible AI, they can also be strategic at times (most notably during the pre 1.9 updates), especially whenever the player ventures or explore underground cave systems or mine at night. There are certain events that the mobs will outplay the player, especially mobs like Creepers, Skeletons, Spiders, and even Witches or Endermen. The Zombies however, can rarely outsmart the player on some situations (most notably when the player is either trapped in dark confined spaces, or in a forest at night). Creepers are widely known for their sneaky characteristics, having to blow up whenever a player is nearby them.
- Zombies and Spiders outwit the player by either going through hordes or attacking them generally at nighttime, and are one of the most common threats to most new players.
- The most strategic of the hostile mobs are the Witches, as whenever they are hit, they will drink potions in order to heal themselves, and can throw different potions with negative effects at players. Endermen are also known as one of the most strategic of them all, as they teleport away from the player whenever they're hit.
- The Hostile Mobs are also the archenemies to all of the passive and neutral mobs in the game, like wolves, villagers, iron golems, and cats, despite targeting mostly only the players.
- The hostile mobs Zombie and Endermen, are the first playable fighters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to have originated from an indie game (considering the fact that Minecraft was indie back then). Creepers and all other hostile mobs are the first indie antagonists to become a Mii fighter, or assist trophies/spirits.
- Even though they are the main antagonists of the main game, they only attack or kill the player in Survival mode, but they can still act as obstacles in Creative Mode. Sometimes they vandalize the player's playground, forcing the player to get rid of them, or by toggling the Peaceful mode in the settings.
- When lightning strikes certain mobs, they will change into special versions: a pig will turn into a zombified piglin, a creeper will turn into a charged creeper, and a villager will turn into a witch.
- All hostile mobs are genderless (except The Ender Dragon, who is female), nameless (except The Ender Dragon, who's name is Jean), and mute as said by Notch in a tweet.
- Renaming a mob "Dinnerbone" or "Grumm" using spawn eggs or nametags will flip them upside down.
- The hostile mob, Creeper, is the most iconic of the hostile mobs, being recognized very easily by fans and people. It also became an internet meme character.
- Endermen are the only hostile/neutral mob that can spawn in all biomes (Overworld, The Nether and The End).
- The Enderman is commonly believed to be inspired by Slender Man.
- In 2020, Mojang held a contest where people could vote on a new type of hostile mob to be added to the game. Among three proposed were the Iceoleger (a variant of the Illagers), The Monster of the Ocean Depths (a squid-like monster) and The Great Hunger (a cute yet land-dwelling creature). However, neither of these three were ultimately concluded as they lost to the Glow Squids and the Phantoms.
- The Hostile Mobs are highly likely to appear in the upcoming 2025 Minecraft film either as supporting or major antagonists and it's possible The Ender Dragon could be the main antagonist or the overreaching antagonist of the film. However, this has not yet been confirmed.
- The sound effects for them were provided by Daniel Rosenfeld and Samuel Åberg.
- Zombie/Enderman are the second video game mobs/enemies to be playable in the Super Smash Bros. series with the first being the Piranha Plants.
- In Minecraft Earth, two unimplemented mobs, the Chicken Jockey from the vanilla game and the exclusive Zombie Rabbit would've been added if the game wasn't discontinued, and the features they would have bought to the game is unknown.
- With the exception of Piglins and Magma Cubes, all other normally hostile mobs in Minecraft Legends are passive and allied with the player.
- Zombie/Enderman is the first playable villain in Super Smash Bros. to be from a third-party universe.
- They are also the third DLC fighter in Super Smash Bros. to be a villain, the first two being Mewtwo, Piranha Plant, followed up by Sephiroth.
- Among Ghasts, their high-pitched cries are often compared to female voices, but this is not only true, their cries have actually been compared to a cat's meow or a baby's cries.
- However the cries of the Ghats came from C418's cat when he was disturbed in his sleep.
