Hotep (Stephen Schwartz)
You should not forget the fate of those Pharaohs who went against the will of the gods. Dynasties come and go. The power of the High Priest is forever.
~ Hotep

Hotep is the main antagonist of Stephen Schwartz's stage adaptation of the 1998 animated musical drama film The Prince of Egypt. Unlike the film, Hotep appears without Huy and plays a larger role.

Appearance[]

Hotep is depicted as a tan man with a beard, similar to his animated incarnation, but while he is not especially thin, he is thinner and taller than said incarnation.

He primarily dresses in white while adorned with gold has an Egyptian hat.

Biography[]

Hotep is infuriated after Moses and Ramses destroy a marketplace and part of a temple whilst they are chariot racing. After Moses accidentally kills an Egyptian guard, Hotep declares that Moses must be punished before Moses flees Egypt in guilt.

Some years later after Moses returns to Egypt to ask a now-Pharaoh Ramses to free the Hebrews, and Ramses agrees as long as Moses will be his advisor. Hotep then arrives with a royal decree that doubles the Hebrews' workload, and he along with Ramses's wife Nefertari influences Ramses to break his promise to Moses.

Later on, after the Ten Plagues, Hotep then accompanies Ramses and his army as they pursue Moses and the Hebrews during their exodus from Egypt. When Moses offers himself as a ransom to Ramses for the Hebrews freedom, Hotep urges Ramses to kill Moses. However, Ramses refuses as he as already seen too much death and instead reconciles with Moses.

Not agreeing with Ramses, Hotep takes control of the army and pursues Moses and the Hebrews through the parted Red Sea. However after the Hebrews have crossed to the other to safety, the Red Sea falls back down, drowning Hotep and the army in the waters.
