House Florent, who had actual blood ties to the Gardeners. They whinge about their ancient rights to Highgarden every once in a while; and now that their daughter is married to Stannis Baratheon, about their rights to all of Westeros, too. Apparently, putting a fox on your banners doesn't impart a fox's wiles.
~ Margaery Tyrell
If truth be told, even our claim to Highgarden is a bit dodgy, just as those dreadful Florents are always whining.
~ Olenna Tyrell to Sansa Stark.
We Florents have the blood of the old Gardener kings in our veins.
~ Axell Florent to Jon Snow.
Every great lord has unruly bannermen who envy him his place. My father had the Reynes and the Tarbecks, the Tyrells have the Florents, Hoster Tully had Walder Frey. Only strength keeps such men in their place.
~ Jaime Lannister

House Florent of Brightwater Keep are supporting characters in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series and minor characters in its television adaptation Game of Thrones. They are one of the main noble houses of the Reach sworn to House Tyrell of Highgarden. House Florent boasts a superior claim to Highgarden by their close blood ties to the House Gardener, the extinct Kings of the Reach.

Biography[]

Age of Heroes and Kingdom of the Reach[]

According to legend, the House of Florent descend from Florys the Fox, a daughter of the mythic High King Garth Greenhand from the Age of Heroes. The legends claim that Florys was the cleverest of Garth's children, earning her "Fox" label. The legend claims that the Houses of Florent, Ball, and Peake are direct descendants of the sons of Florys' three husbands, each kept ignorant of the existence of the others.

Throughout the centuries of the Kingdom of the Reach, the Florents were vassals of House Gardener of Highgarden, the royal family of the realm. The Florents married into the Gardeners numerous times, and for centuries the Houses Peake and Osgrey boasted about marrying their daughters to the prestigious Florents.

Targaryen Dynasty[]

During Aegon's Conquest, House Florent followed their liege, King Mern IX Gardener, who formed a mighty and powerful army to face the Valyrian lord and invader Aegon the Conqueror, who was attacking the Seven Kingdoms. The invasion of the Reach ended up in a disaster for the Gardeners in the battle known as the Field of Fire, known to be the only time Aegon ever resorted to unleash all three Targaryen dragons at the same time, which resulted in a complete carnage and massacre.

As King Mern and all his sons burned to death and the Gardeners' line ended, Aegon named the Tyrells as Lord Paramount of the Reach. This outraged the Florents and the majority of the Reach's nobility, because the Tyrells were only a minor noble house of stewards (similarly to how the Targaryens were only an even smaller house during the Valyrian empire). Many of the houses insisted to having superior claims to Highgarden, from their family connections to House Gardener and past marriages. The Florents especially possessed a superior claim by their blood ties to the Kings of the Reach. The Florents was among the many great houses of the Reach that complained about being made vassals of the lower born Tyrells, as their blood was "nobler" than that of the "upjumped stewards". Their protests, however, were denied by King Aegon I, possibly because the Florents and many of the complaining families had fought against the Targaryens during the Conquest, whilst the Tyrells did nothing.

Only a few years after the Dance of the Dragons, Lord Unwin Peake attempted to make his daughter Myrielle the queen to the young widower King Aegon III Targaryen, and Lady Samantha Hightower (née Tarly) nominated nubile Florent maidens, among other noble houses, as potential queen consorts for the king. Aegon ended up taking Daenaera Velaryon for his second wife instead.

During the reign of King Daeron II Targaryen, Ser Arlan of Pennytree and his squire Duncan "Dunk" were in service to the blind Lord Florent by 206 AC. Three years later, the then knighted Ser Duncan the Tall spotted arms of House Florent in the assembled heraldry at the tourney at Ashford Meadow. Ser Aladore Florent, heir to Brightwater Keep, and Ser Jon Florent participated in the tourney.

During a tourney, Ser Denys Mallister unhorsed both of Samwell Tarly's grandfathers, Randyll Tarly's lord father and Alester Florent, long before he joined the Night's Watch and would eventually rise to Commander of the Shadow Tower.

Baratheon Dynasty[]

Sometime after Robert's Rebellion, Selyse Florent married Stannis Baratheon, Lord of Dragonstone and brother of King Robert I Baratheon, who took the crown from the Targaryen cousins. The marriage would not be a happy one, and the reasons behind it are unknown. Noting how cold the couple is, Jon Snow thinks how in the day of their wedding, there must have been an icy blizzard. Unlike in the novels, in the television series version it is stated that Selyse was part of the Siege of Storm's End during Robert's Rebellion, although it is unclear whether she was already married to Stannis or not. In the television series, Stannis is less harsh towards his wife, while in the novels he has no patience for her, he is not attracted to her, and usually only addresses her as "woman".

During Stannis and Selyse's wedding feast, King Robert took Delena Florent's virginity. Lord Tywin Lannister offered his dwarf son, Tyrion, for marriage to the despoiled Delena, but her father, Ser Colin Florent, instead married her to one of his household knights, Ser Hosman Norcross. Delena gave birth to Edric Storm, acknowledged by the King as his bastard son, as Delena was a noblewoman. Stannis saw Edric's presence as an insult to his honor, so he sent Edric to Storm's End to foster with Lord Renly Baratheon.

Ser Axell Florent, brother of Lord Alester Florent, serves Lord Stannis as castellan of Dragonstone, in charge of the castle's garrison and administration of the island's territory and villages, while Stannis lives at his brother Robert's court in King's Landing, serving as the small council's master of ships. Alester and Axell's youngest brother and Selyse's father, Ser Ryam Florent, died falling from a horse at an unknown point, and it is never said whether he was still alive or not by the time his daughter married into the royal family.

Delena Florent's eldest and illegitimate son, Edric Storm, is one of the two only officially acknowledged and fully educated highborn bastard children of King Robert I Baratheon, the other one being the girl Mya Stone, who lives at the Gates of the Moon in the Vale of Arryn, serving House Royce's cadet branch, and is Robert's very first known child.

Melessa Florent - who is Lord Alester Florent's eldest daughter, younger sister of Alekyne Florent, and older sister of Rhea Florent - is married to Lord Randyll Tarly of Horn Hill, and is the one of gave their eldest child Samwell the affectionate abbreviation "Sam". Melessa's lord husband once took Samwell with him on a voyage to the Arbor, where he ended up being endlessly bullied, beaten, humiliated, and pranked by the teenaged and young inhabitants around him, especially the twins Horas and Hobber Redwyne, as well as laughed upon by the girls. After Randyll took Sam back to Horn Hill without ever speaking to him throughout the voyage, Melessa revealed to Sam that his father wanted him to remain on the island and become Lord Paxter Redwyne's page and squire, but Sam turned out to be a complete embarassment to Randyll's family. Randyll always used to complain to Melessa about Samwell's cowardice and unmanliness, once assuring Sam that he would certainly die a virgin.

When Dickon Tarly was a baby, his mother Lady Melessa Tarly and his eldest sibling Samwell used lull him together to sleep, until they were eventually caught by Randyll, who then forbade his wife to sing any lullabies to Dickon ever again, accusing her of being responsible of "ruining" Samwell and making him soft and cowardly. Randyll told Melessa she would not ruin Dickon as well, and warned his son Samwell to never get close to Dickon ever again.

Lord Florent's youngest daughter, and Alekyne and Melessa's sister, Rhea Florent is Lord Leyton Hightower's fourth wife. Lord Hightower has ten trueborn children in total, but it is not specified in the novels if Rhea is mother of any of them.

Some years prior the beginning of A Game of Thrones, a red priestess from Asshai named Melisandre arrives at Dragonstone in search of Azor Ahai, a prophesied prince in her religion, with the intention to become close to said prince and support him the the "war for life itself". She grows to believe that Stannis Baratheon is Azor Ahai and that he will lead humanity in the war for the dawn against the Great Other, the enemy to her god, R'hllor. She plans to have Stannis be "reborn" as Azor Ahai. Stannis rarely visits Dragonstone, however, as he lives at court in King's Landing and serves his brother King Robert in the small council as the master of ships, and when he's away he's mostly sailing around the seas to fight pirates and smugglers. In order to try getting closer to Stannis, Melisandre develops a friendship with his wife Selyse Florent, who eventually makes her a confidant.

Selyse and Melisandre spend years to spread the faith of R'hllor, making nightfires, and converting as many of the island's residents as they can. At King's Landing, Lord Varys informs the small council, especially Stannis, about the two women spreading a foreign religion in Dragonstone, but Stannis does not care and sees no reason to forbid his wife and her friend from doing it. Ser Axell Florent becomes one of the most fervent supporters of R'hllor.

A Game of Thrones[]

Selyse Florent's husband, Lord Stannis Baratheon vanishes from court and its political environment and leaves King's Landing without notice, taking his entire household and even almost the entire royal navy and its captains with him at Dragonstone. Due to Stannis's 14 years-long service as the realm's master of ships, the majority of the navy's sailors and captains are closer and loyal to the Lord of Dragonstone, thus leaving only a meager fleet left in King's Landing. The small council simply assume Stannis is on one of his few visits to his wife Selyse and his daughter Shireen, who do not live at court. Due to recent news from Pentos about the exile Robert and Stannis's cousins - Viserys and Daenerys Targaryen - affiliating themselves to the Dothraki, it is assumed Stannis brought the royal fleet to Dragonstone simply for defensive purposes. Discussing Stannis's absence from King's Landing with the new Hand of the King, Lord Eddard Stark, Lord Renly Baratheon makes fun of his sister-in-law, Selyse, and about hers and Stannis's "ugly little daughter" Shireen. Stannis is reported to be building new ships at Dragonstone, concerning Eddard about the purposes. Dragonstone's port has been closed to the world without any explanation and Lord Varys's net of paid spies on the island has become ominously silent.

A Clash of Kings[]

As the War of the Five Kings rages in the Riverlands with battles and sieges, House Florent follows its liege of House Tyrell in supporting Lord Renly Baratheon, who has recently crowned himself king and wed Margaery Tyrell at Highgarden. The Florents field roughly two thousand men.

Stannis Baratheon's bannermen and sworn vassals of the Valyrian islands of Blackwater Bay, as well as some vassals from the mainland Crownlands, have rallied their armies and naval forces at Dragonstone, to fight for their overlords. Numerous sellsails, sellswords, and freeriders have also been hired to the cause. After the envoy Ser Davos Seaworth returns from his unsuccessful envoy mission from the Stormlands, Maester Cressen advises Stannis to offer Lady Lysa Arryn (née Tully) a betrothal between his daughter, Princess Shireen Baratheon, and her son, Lord Robert Arryn, in order to gain the Vale of Arryn's allegiance. Selyse opposes Cressen's advice, complaining that her husband must not beg, bargain, or sell his heir for his legal rights and liegecraft that should alredy be owned to him, as the rightful king.

Selyse speaks with her husband about her family's military strength, believing that her uncle, Lord Alester Florent, and her brothers, Ser Imry and Ser Erren, will pledge their swords to Stannis's cause. Stannis believes otherwise, as the region ruled by the Florents in the Reach lies too close to Highgarden for Alester to risk Lord Mace Tyrell's wrath. Selyse suggests a "what if" scenario, should Renly suddenly and conveniently die, which will give her husband the ability to gain the Stormlands' rightful allegiance, and possibly the Reach's as well. Cressen is horrified, as he interprets Selyse's words as an implication to assassinate Renly. Selyse convinces Stannis to seek help from her confidant and red priestess Melisandre, who believes Stannis is destined to greatness and has been wishing to speak to him for a long time. Later that same day, Melisandre joins Stannis's court and is given a seat on the dining high table in the castle's Great Hall. When Cressen still speaks against Melisandre, Selyse tries to humiliate him by forcing him to dance with the court jester Patchface, but Stannis turns down her suggestion. Selyse, her husband and uncle, and all of Stannis's bannermen, knights, and captains watch with surprise Cressen ending up poisoning himself after failing to kill Melisandre with the strangler, while Patchface keeps singing without bother.

Days later, now attached to Stannis, Melisandre publicly proclaims her King to be the Lord's Chosen and above the rest of humanity, and personally crowns him, in place of the High Septon of the Seven. Selyse becomes the Red Woman's most fervent supporter, along with her uncle, Ser Axell Florent, who become leaders of those who choose to adopt the Lord of Light and forsake the Seven. The faith of R'hllor's is made the official religion of Dragonstone, and Stannis's small kingdom of Valyrian islands is divided between "king's men" and "queen's men", the former being those who retain the Faith of the Seven, oppose the Red Woman's religion, or are simply not interested in it, and the latter being the ones who support Selyse's faith of R'hllor and believe Stannis is more than just a king. Despite Selyse and Axell's wish to make R'hllor's worship mandatory and punish unbelievers, Stannis remains indifferent to the Red God and religion in general. All his subjects are allowed to worship whatever god they prefer, especially because a large portion of them refuses to adopt a foreign and occult religion.

Stannis allows Selyse to have Aegon I Targaryen's sept raided and destroyed, resulting in a violent confrontation between believers of the Seven and those of R'hllor. Ser Hubard Rambton and his three sons kill four of the queen's men as they attempt to defend the sept, until they are overwhelmed. Hubard and one son are killed, while the other two sons are arrested. Septon Barre is also thrown into the dungeons with them for protesting, and later Lord Guncer Sunglass is made to join them after informing Stannis that he can no longer support him as a king. Selyse and Axell are among the crowd of lords, knights, and captains watching the ruined sept's large statues of the Seven being burned in Dragonstone's castle's courtyard as an offer to the Red God. After Stannis is proclaimed Azor Ahai reborn and receives his new red sword Lightbringer, Selyse and Axell shout their support. Selyse and Stannis stay briefly, although Stannis refuses to say the words "for the night is dark and full of terrors". Selyse and her husband leave the ceremony back inside the castle, while Melisandre and many others stay to watch the nightfire. Out of the Florents, only Selyse, Axell, and their own soldiers and household follow Stannis, as the rest of the house is fighting for Renly.

Stannis announces his claim to the Iron Throne to the world, proclaiming himself king and Robert's true heir, and sending numerous ravens and the older Seaworths with messengers across the whole Westeros and to the Free Cities, announcing to the public that King Joffrey I Baratheon is a usurper and that he and his siblings, Princess Myrcella and Prince Tommen, are the bastard children products of incest fathered by Ser Jaime Lannister with his twin sister and Dowager Queen Cersei Lannister. Selyse Florent becomes Stannis's queen consort, although aside for Axell, the rest of the Florents support Renly's claim and Lord Alester serves as Renly and Mace Tyrell's bannerman. Selyse's new crown matches that of Stannis; red gold with points in the shape of flames. Axell is convinced to have seen a vision in the flames, which he interprets as a future celebration for Stannis's victory after he will take the Iron Throne.

To counter Stannis's incest allegations against Cersei and to discredit him, Joffrey's small council spreads a rumor insinuating that Princess Shireen Baratheon has been fathered by Stannis's fool Patchface, sent to Selyse's bed by the order of Stannis himself, out of disgust for his wife, thus accusing Shireen of being a bastard of House Florent. Initially, Cersei suggested creating a rumor claiming that Shireen has been fathered by Selyse's uncle Axell, but the rest of the council thought it did not appear credible, therefore choosing Patchface instead.

When Stannis sails with his entire fleet for Storm's End to lure Renly there, he leaves Selyse and Axell on Dragonstone, to rule the island as they did for the past years.

House Florent's army, led by Lord Alester Florent of Brightwater Keep, are part of Renly's great host during its deliberately slow march to King's Landing, stopping to have feasts and tourneys at every castle and town in the Reach. During their stay at Bitterbridge, they are joined by envoy Lady Catelyn Stark, née Tully, who came with a small party of trusted highborn northern and rivermen envoy companions to deliver an offer of alliance from her son, King Robb Stark. Later riders arrive to the castle to bring urgent news, alerting Renly that his brother Stannis and his army are laying siege to Storm's End. Renly splits his host into two separate armies, leaving half (mostly infantry) at Bitterbridge to wait for him, while he leads the other half (cavalry) to face Stannis in the Stormlands, thus also splitting the Florent host into two. Lord Florent and his nephews - Stannis's brothers-in-law - Ser Imry and Ser Erren are part of Renly's host marching to Storm's End.

During the unsuccessful parley between King Stannis and King Renly outside of Storm's End, Renly taunts his brother by reminding him that Stannis's wife own family has sworn allegiance to him. After King Renly's mysterious death (by Melisandre's shadowbinding sorcery with a a shadow assassin), the Florent army, led by Lord Alester Florent, are the first and the most powerful of the Reach houses to defect to King Stannis. A huge portion of of Renly's host at Storm's End joins Stannis, mostly houses from the Stormlands and the majority of the storm lords, but also some houses from the Reach and their lords, while a fifth of Renly's forces retreats from the siege back to the Reach.

Alester is the first of Stannis's new lords who discards the Faith of the Seven and converts to the faith of R'hllor, and becomes a leader of the queen's men, although he only does so to have the favor of his new king and his queen niece Selyse. Due to the bad blood between Stannis and Mace Tyrell, some believe Stannis will punish the Tyrells and possibly strip them of some rights and titles to give them to House Florent, who might hope to be named the new Lords Paramount of the Mander. Alester's nephew and Selyse's youngest brother, Ser Erren Florent, is one of the knights Stannis sends to recruit Renly's infantry at Bitterbridge, but they do not return.

Erren, Ser Parmen Crane, and the other knights sent by Stannis reach Bitterbridge to win Renly's infantry, near 60,000 men. The camps around the castle, however, fall into chaos and infighting, split between supporters of Stannis and those opposing him, becoming a collection of fighting feudal levies. Some men leave Bitterbridge to return to their homes.

Eventually, the remaining army of Renly from the Siege of Storm's End, led by Ser Loras Tyrell, returns to Bitterbridge, to win the host back to their side, opposing the wish of Stannis's envoys. A fight breaks out between those who wish to declare for Stannis and those who follow the Tyrells' decision not to, while the rest remain neutral. The castle of Bitterbridge shuts its doors and gates, while the infighting in the camps continues. Lord Randyll Tarly seizes the camps' stores and has many men of the host killed, mainly Florents, so they don't march to Stannis at Storm's End. Ser Erren Florent and Ser Parmen Crane are captured and later taken hostages to Highgarden.

Lord Alester is with Stannis during the parley with Ser Cortnay Penrose outside Storm's End's walls during the ongoing siege. Cortnay, who is Renly's castellan, still refuses to yield Storm's End or his ward, Edric Storm, the bastard son of Delena Florent and the late King Robert. Ravens have been sent by Storm's End everywhere across the realm, requesting for aid against Stannis, including one to the Tullys at Riverrun, as Cortnay is convinced Stannis might hurt or even kill his nephew Edric. During the parley with Stannis, most of the King's new bannermen accuse Brienne of Tarth for Renly's death, whilst Lord Florent accuses Catelyn Stark of being Renly's killer, because Renly demanded Robb's allegiance. Cortnay accuses Alester of being a turncloak, and Alester advises Stannis to seize Cortnay's old father, the Storm Lord Penrose from Parchments, bring him to Storm's End and hang him before his son's eyes to force him to surrender.

After Cortnay's sudden death in the night (killed by another shadow assassin sent by Melisandre), Storm's End's garrison bend the knee to King Stannis, who allows Melisandre to burn the castle's godswood, as an offer to the Lord of Light. Although Alester made himself a queen's man, the majority of Stannis's war council's lords and captains are king's men, and they all advise him not to take Melisandre along with them to King's Landing, telling the King that people will always claim his victory will be achieved through sorcery. They also disagree with Stannis's decision to use the new Baratheon flaming stag and heart heraldry as the main banner for his host and fleet in the upcoming battle, believing it only brings fear upon those who see it and being outlandish and unfamiliar. They wish Stannis would use the traditional Baratheon stag for the siege, as the smallfolk of King's Landing would feel more happy, reassured, and even cheer at the sight of the beloved and familiar King Robert's crowned stag. Stannis only agrees with the first advice and thus ships Melisandre, along with his nephew Edric, back to Dragonstone.

Selyse's brother, Ser Imry Florent, is given command of Stannis's royal fleet - 200 ships - for the siege of King's Landing, as its admiral with the title of Lord High Captain made for him by Stannis himself. Aside for recently built ships and the hired sellsail ships, the majority of Stannis's fleet is actually the Iron Throne's royal navy. It was King Robert's royal fleet from the capital that Stannis, former admiral of the Crown, had built and used to submit the Valyrian Targaryen vassal houses, destroy the Iron Fleet during Greyjoy's Rebellion, and to sail around the world for years to execute smugglers and pirates, and tax lords and trading ships.

At Storm's End, a restructured garrison led by Ser Gilbert Farring is left to hold the castle in Stannis's name. The Florent host is split when Stannis's army is divided as the cavalry vanguard, the naval fleet, and the main and mainly mounted host commanded by Stannis himself. Because of the weather, Stannis's royal fleet led by Imry is slowed down and takes its time to reach King's Landing, while Stannis's vanguard, led by Ser Guyard Morrigen, arrives to the city first.

A few days after Guyard's arrival, Stannis and his main host reach King's Landing and reunite with Guyard's host before the fleet arrives, and they spend days camped outside the city, in the kingswood at the southern side of the Blackwater Rush. They burn the kingswood and fight multiple skirmishes against the harassing guerrilla forces of the Vale mountain clansmen, dispatched by the acting Hand of the King, Tyrion Lannister. During one of these skirmishes in one night, Sansa Stark spots Florent banners in Stannis's vanguard, while watching above a tower of the Red Keep.

While still sailing across the coast of the Crownlands, Ser Imry's naval forces capture six fishing skiffs near Merling Rock. They also briefly invade some settlements, including a fishing village, and the smallfolk are interrogated about King's Landing's defenses.

King's Landing remains under siege by King Stannis and his camped host, as they build siege weapons, drafts, and arrows, and they keep waiting for arrival of their fleet. As Stannis's fleet is getting closer to its destination, Imry warns all the captains during a war council meeting that King Joffrey's defenders may use wildfire during the upcoming battle, but he confidently reassures the captains that the enemy will surely have a limited supply of wildfire, as the Alchemists' Guild is not as strong and numerous as they once were. Unbeknownst to Imry, however, Queen Dowager Cersei Lannister has tasked the alchemists of King's Landing with making more wildfire back when Renly was still alive. It is unknown if Imry is aware that a few years before a massive stash of wildfire caches was found beneath the Great Sept of Baelor, and the horrified, and recently murdered, High Septon had them removed, and have now been added to the wildfire supply meant to fight Stannis. The pyromancer Wisdom Hallyne attributes the unexpected success of his guild's magical spells to the possible reappearance of dragons in the western parts of the Known World.

Because King Stannis's fleet is four times larger than that of King Joffrey, Imry does not bother to send scouts ahead as the captain of the Black Betha Ser Davos Seaworth advises. Due to Davos's lowborn status, Imry looks down on him and treats him as inferior. Distrusting Salladhor Saan and his Lysene pirates, Imry tasks Saan's fleet with the rearguard in Blackwater Bay, much to Davos's disagreement, as he thinks the pirates's lust for battle, riches, and savage skills are being wasted. Imry refers to Joffrey's small royal fleet as "Joffrey's toys".

While Stannis is fighting his war, at Dragonstone Selyse and Melisandre burn several prisoners alive as human sacrifices to R'hllor for Stannis's victory, including Ser Hubard Rambton's two remaining sons and Lord Guncer Sunglass.

Finally, after days of siege and skirmishes outside King's Landing's walls, Imry and his fleet reach the capital. The city's garrison, led by Tyrion, dispatch King Joffrey's royal fleet to engage them. While Stannis's royal fleet is still at Blackwater Bay, Ser Davos Seaworth advises Imry to send scouts ahead first, to study the enemy's defenses, before entering the river, between to watchtowers. The overconfident Imry, however, relies on the size of his fleet and does not bother to send scouts, instead commanding the fleet to enter the Blackwater Rush and leaving only Salladhor Saan's fleet as rearguard in Blackwater Bay.

During the Battle of the Blackwater, Imry's ships lower their sails and only use oars, to avoid scorpions and spitfires defending the walls of King's Landing. As the fleet enters the Blackwater Rush, Imry disregards two new watchtowers at the mouth of the river. Despite Davos noticing the towers hold a massive chain underwater, Imry has the fleet continue its way to the river's mouth, where Joffrey's fleet waits to begin the battle.

On the mouth of the Blackwater, Imry and his naval forces engage Joffrey's sailors, soldiers, and captains in a naval battle on the river, Robert I Baratheon's divided royal navy fighting itself. At the same time Stannis's and Guyard's mounted forces of stormlanders, crownlanders, and reachmen fight against King's Landing's garrison of men-at-arms, sellswords, freeriders, a few knights, the City Watch, and the Kingsguard outside the city's walls, led by Sandor Clegane and Ser Balon Swann, including a force of men led by Ser Lancel Lannister, both sides charging against each other ahorse. While Ser Imry leads the naval battle, King Stannis and Ser Guyard Morrigen are leading the land battle and the lords bannermen. Throughout the land conflict, the Florent knights and men-at-arms serve under Stannis, Guyard, and other lords and Baratheon officers. Lord Alester Florent remains mounted on the rearguard on the southern shore of the river, where Stannis's war camps are in the burned parts of the kingswood, and outriders fight against the Vale mountain clansmen. An unnamed Florent bastard is also part of the battle and fighting for Stannis, either as part of the fleet or the army.

During the battle between Stannis and Joffrey's fleets, Imry fights on Stannis's own ship Fury, commanded by Imry himself as Stannis's admiral. From within the city, pots of pitch and fire arrows are flung at the ships and the land forces, and three gigantic trebuchets located within the city, known as the "three whores", fling stones at the invaders. As both armies and navies are having their respective battle, wildfire from Joffrey's ships suddenly spreads from the damage caused by Stannis's ships. As soon as this happens, Tyrion's massive defensive chain is raised between the towers, cutting Imry's ships' retreat and leaving them sandwiched between the chain and Joffrey's ships and combatants. As a result of Imry's refusal to send scouts ahead, almost the entire naval force of Stannis is trapped in the Blackwater Rush by Tyrion's chain, except for the ships which remained at the bay on the sea. While Fury battles Godsgrace, both ships are engulfed by wildfire.

After the sailors and soldiers keep fighting and struggling with the wildfire's chain reaction destruction both fleets of Stannis and Joffrey end up burned and destroyed by wildfire in caches hidden within Joffrey's ships, unbeknownst to Joffrey's own captains and combatants. Imry dies on the Fury along with most of his men in the burning river, while Joffrey's fleet is completely wiped out. Instead Imry's first two battle lines were well upstream of the fire when the hulks went up, and thus around thirty or forty galleys are able to escape the inferno for the time being. Eight ships manage to land under the city walls and put men ashore to launch their assault, while many of the Myrmen sellsails escape the flames by sailing for the south bank, where their comrades of Stannis's army are.

The survivors of the wildfire attack swim and regroup on the Blackwater's shores to attack the city, and some of Stannis's ships even remain intact and the forces within them are able to join the assault on the city's walls. Throughout the battle on the river, Stannis's land army has been fighting against King's Landing's defenders and cavalry, and as the battle drags on, Joffrey's forces suffer heavy casualties. Sandor Clegane and Ser Balon Swann have been leading sorties against Stannis' men, Sandor leading three charges against the invaders, until retreating from the battlefield, which remains engulfed in raging green flames.

House Florent continues to fight in Stannis's host during the battle at the shores of the river and at the city's gates. Waves of Stannis' men land on the tourney grounds and attack the King's Gate with a battering ram. They are attacked by another sortie, this time personally led by the acting Lord Hand Tyrion Lannister. At the same time, the River Gate (better known as the Mud Gate) is attacked by Stannis' men as well with another ram. Despite the defenders' efforts, the battle remains in Stannis's favor, and eventually the defenders end up deserting and fleeing by the hundreds, leaving the walls and killing their own officers, while King's Landing falls into chaos with multiple riots, mass desertion, masses of people and looters flooding the shut gates still not invaded, fighting the City Watch for them to be opened, the Red Keep's gates flooded with people demanding access, and the Great Sept of Baelor overflowed with people panicking and praying with the High Septon for the Seven to defeat Stannis's Lord of Light.

Throughout the whole battle, Lord Alester Florent remains on his horse in the army's rearguard in Stannis's camps in the kingswood. After the battle goes on for long hours, the camps are suddenly ambushed from the rear by the unexpected arrival of enemies, who reveal themselves to be the former allies of most of Stannis's army from Renly's army. They are led by "Renly" himself (actually Ser Garlan Tyrell wearing Renly's iconic green armor).

While the Mud Gate and the city's walls are still under attack, Stannis's forces at the King's Gate are dispersed by Tyrion's sortie. On the river, galleys smashed into each other have tangled together, creating a bridge of ships, which is used by Stannis' boldest knights to cross the river, even with horses. They clash against Tyrion's forces until the bridge collapses and everyone retreats, while others drown in the heated river, sinking under their boiling armors' weight. At the same time, Stannis's war camps are being attacked by the new enemy force and cavalry.

Despite the good strategy and Stannis almost winning, the Florents' rivals and former overlords, the Tyrells, arrived with an army of the Reach and the army of the Westerlands, and some forces from the Stormlands, led by Lords Tywin Lannister, Mace Tyrell, Randyll Tarly, Ser Kevan Lannister, and Ser Garlan Tyrell. Lord Tywin leads the right wing on the north side of the Blackwater, while Lord Tarly commands the center and Lord Tyrell the left. What really causes the confusion and breaking of ranks and formations of Stannis's host is the enemy's vanguard, led by Ser Garlan as the "returned" Renly Baratheon, which plunges through Stannis' army. Renly's former supporters of the Stormlands and the Reach, mainly the ignorant men-at-arms, become convinced that their dead king has returned and seeking vengeance, resulting with them abandoning Stannis. Garlan personally kills Ser Guyard Morrigen. With Garlan leading the van as "Renly's ghost", the hosts of Tywin, Mace, and Randyll rout Stannis's men by attacking Stannis's camps, while Garlan reached the other shore and city's walls to stop the invasion. Alester Florent's own camp is overrun by Lannisters, while numerous men and lords run away instead of staying with Stannis. Numerous of them switch sides, are taken captive, and many yield and swear allegiance to the enemy in the middle of the battle, while others flee in the kingswood.

At Blackwater Bay, Salladhor Saan realizes the battle has turned bad for his side, so he puts his ships along the shore and his Lysene pirates take as many people as will fit. Alester is among the remaining men and bannermen of Stannis's host who manage to escape, after Stannis is convinced by Ser Richard Horpe and Ser Justin Massey to retreat, although their king bitterly wishes to continue fighting. Ser Rolland Storm, the Bastard of Nightsong, leads a rearguard action, and thanks to him several hundreds of men, including Stannis himself and about half of them Florents, to reach Salladhor's ships. As Saan’s ships can only take a limited amount of men, thousands of Stannis's army are left behind due to lack of space, and during the last stages of the retreat, men begin to kill each other to get aboard and escape. Once their ships are too full to take anyone else, Saan's pirates retreat with Stannis's remaining men to Blackwater Bay, and once there they all escape in Salladhor's fleet back to Dragonstone. The rest of Stannis's host who survive the battle are captured, numerous of them highborn hostages, including the majority of the lords bannermen or their relatives, while numerous of the lowborn combatants and non-valuable men are killed in action.

The majority of Stannis's army's captured vassals from the Stormlands, Valyrian isles, the mainland Crownlands, and the Reach are pardoned by the Iron Throne after they bend the knee to King Joffrey, and are later included into Randyll Tarly's army. The rest, however, remain loyal to Stannis, while Stannis's lowborn soldiers are executed. A group of several fanatic supporters of Stannis, remain openly defiant in front of the entire court in the Red Keep, and in front of Tywin and the nobility attending. They openly ridicule Joffrey, mock him, and refuse to bend the knee, choosing death instead. One of them is a bastard son from House Florent, who repeatedly insults and curses Joffrey and his family, declares Joffrey a product of incest, cries out the Lord of Light and how Stannis is his chosen one, and promising to Joffrey, Tywin, and the rest of the court that Stannis is not defeated and that he will win next time. The Florent bastard causes the upset Joffrey to accidentally fall, injure himself on the Iron Throne, and cry for his mother in pain and fear, as he is excused out of the court session. The defiant men are all executed, presumably even the Florent bastard.

A large portion of House Florent's army is still fighting for Stannis, including Alester himself, and remain rebels. For their defiance against both Joffrey and the Tyrells, the Florents are attainted and stripped of all their lands and titles by the Iron Throne.

A Storm of Swords[]

Most of Stannis's men that were rescued by Salladhor Saan's Lysene fleet are vassals of House Florent. Over half of Stannis's remaining court and host are Florents. A depressed and brooding Stannis names Alester Florent his Hand of the King, in part because he is Selyse's uncle. Stannis shuts himself in his chambers with Melisandre and no longer shows himself in public, leaving Dragonstone's administration to Alester and Selyse, who rule on his behalf. Selyse gives her uncle the King's seal to speak in Stannis's name. Stannis's host remains divided in two halves; king's men and queen's men, the former still keeping the Faith of the Seven or just refusing to worship R'hllor overall. Several of the knights and men-at-arms who had initially embraced the foreign god end up abandoning the religion after the defeat at King's Landing, especially due to said god's apparent inability to protect their fleet from wildfire. Many of the king's men even blame the Lord of Light for Stannis's defeat, accusing the god of being just a weak and corrupting demon.

Due to his defeat, Stannis is unable to pay his primary sellsail and pirate captain Salladhor Saan, leaving a large debt of gold, as Salladhor has been robbed of his chance to plunder King's Landing as payment for his services. To convince Salladhor to remain in Stannis's service and wait for his promised payment, Lord Alester grants him the title of Lord of Blackwater Bay, written on an official formal parchment, bearing the Hand's seal. Using said title and document, Salladhor sets his fleet to intercept any trade ships crossing Blackwater Bay and "tax" them on their goods. With that, trading sailors are forced to pay the Lysene pirates with sums of money. Any time trade ships are caught sneakily crossing Blackwater Bay in the night by Salladhor's fleet, the owners are deemed "outlaws" and "smugglers", giving Salladhor an excuse to seize their ships for his own fleet and plunder the sailors of all their belongings.

Ser Davos Seaworth also survived the Battle of the Blackwater and later returns to Dragonstone, after being rescued by Lysene pirates who are roaming around Blackwater Bay to look for more survivors and tax ships. Ser Axell Florent is warned by Melisandre that Davos is plotting to assassinate her. After he is brought back to the island of Dragonstone, Davos is arrested by Axell and his men not too long after he enters the castle. In Aegon's Garden, while Princess Shireen and her cousin Edric Storm are playing, Davos is disarmed on Axell's orders, telling his men that Davos intends to use his dagger to kill their red lady.

The Florents still dispute House Tyrell's ownership of Highgarden. Lord Tywin Lannister, the Hand of King Joffrey, has dispossessed the Florents of all their holdings, lands, seat, wealth, and titles and awards them to Lord Tyrell's second son, Ser Garlan Tyrell, as a reward for loyal service and his role as "Renly's ghost" in the Battle of the Blackwater. Thus, the cadet branch House Tyrell of Brightwater Keep is formed. Selyse's surviving brother, Ser Erren Florent, who was previously captured at Bitterbridge, remains held captive at Highgarden.

At Dragonstone, Maester Pylos shows Alester a letter from the Night's Watch, containing a plea by Lord Steward Bowen Marsh and Maester Aemon for aid against an invading host beyond the Wall made of all the free folk "wildling" united tribes. Alester dismisses the plea, because Stannis lacks manpower. When learning about Stannis and Melisandre's idea to awake one the castle's stone dragon with blood magic, hoping to even awake all of the stone dragons. Alester opposes it and advises his brother Axell against such plan, while the skeptical Stannis personally always wished to have a dragon, ever since he was a child.

While he is still ruling Dragonstone in Stannis's name, Alester tries to make peace with the Crown and House Lannister by writing a letter to Tywin. He offers to have Stannis give up his claim to the Iron Throne in exchange for him being allowed to keep his status as Lord of Dragonstone and Lord of Storm's End. Alester vows to bend the knee to Joffrey in exchange for Brightwater Keep and all its lands, titles, and holdings. As a show of reconciliation, he offers Tywin to seal the bargain by wedding Stannis's daughter Shireen to her legal cousin, Crown Prince Tommen Baratheon. Before he can send the raven to King's Landing, Alester's plans are discovered by the queen's men and his terms are shown to Stannis, who is furious with them. Alester is accused of treason and thrown into the castle's dungeon by his brother Axell, who has him put in the same cell as Davos, so that the two accused traitors can "enjoy each other's company", whilst Alester calls for his brother to come back at let him speak to Selyse.

In their cell, Alester speaks to Davos and justifies his actions and does not acknowledge them as treason. He claims to be loyal to Stannis and his own niece Selyse, even pointing out that he stayed with the King during the Battle of the Blackwater, when others fled or yielded to the enemy. He confirms to Davos that his nephew Imry died at the Blackwater, and that Lord Monford Velaryon burned to death with Pride of Driftmark always in the river battle, the latter now leaving the six year old Monterys Velaryon as the new Lord of the Tides and Master of Driftmark, still supporting Stannis as the majority of the Valyrian Houses, except Lord Celtigar. Alester tells Davos that he did not act out of malice, but to save the lives of everyone still with Stannis, mainly out of desperation to maintain his family's noble status and possessions, instead of losing everything. Alester sees himself as innocent and protests against the accusations of treason, pointing out that he still took Stannis's survival into consideration, by acting as his Lord Hand and asking Tywin to pardon him and let him keep the Baratheon holdings. Alester insists that at this point, this is the only way for Stannis to get a "happy ending", for he can no longer hope to continue fighting, or else he will simply die, along with his vassals. He states that the hard truth is that Stannis will never sit on the Iron Throne.

Davos understands Alester's point of view, but tells him that Stannis would never accept to yield to Tywin, least of all bend the knee to the usurper Joffrey, and that Stannis sees bargaining and begging, even for his life, as weakness, and that he would rather keep fighting to his last breath. Furthermore, Alester abused his position as Hand by taking matters that went beyond his authority, made peace terms that were not decided by the King himself, and attempted to deliver them without his knowledge, in what was a proposal to hand Shireen over as a hostage to the Iron Throne. Alester justifies his decision by saying that Stannis was not able to act on his own nor think clearly due to his depression. He sees Stannis's stubborness as madness, as he does with the King and Melisandre's plan to awake the castle's stone dragons, opposing any attempts to play around with sorcery and seeing talks of dragons as something to avoid. He asks if anyone has learned anything from horrors involving magic and the occult such as the Doom of Valyria and the Tragedy of Summerhall.

Axell wants both his brother and Davos to be burned as traitors, but Melisandre advises Stannis to speak with Davos. Axell seeks to be named as the new Hand of the King, with Selyse urging Stannis to appoint him. In order to obtain the position, Axell strikes a deal with Salladhor Saan for his support by promising the pirate his share of the wealth of Claw Isle, one of the Valyrian islands in Blackwater Bay. Davos is taken out of the dungeons, and Axell ignores his brother Alester's pleas to be allowed to speak to Selyse and Stannis. Axell only denounces his brother as a traitor and even takes the torch from his cell to leave him in the darkness without the light of R'hllor, causing a despairing Alester to appeal to the Seven gods. While Axell still desires for Alester and Davos to be burned as traitors, he has to comply with Stannis's order, and escorts Davos to meet the king in the Chamber of the Painted Table. On their way, however, Axell tries to intimidate Davos and threatens to have him killed by the castle's garrison, if Davos refuses to recommend him as the next Hand to Stannis.

During the meeting, Stannis talks about Alester to Davos, showing conflicted emotions about the imprisoned lord. On one side, Stannis is furious that Alester attempted to make peace with the Lannisters behind his back and offer his only child Shireen as a hostage to Lord Tywin. He is outraged by the fact that he suggested to wed her to Tommen, a product of incest, which would have forced Stannis not to raise arms against the Lannisters ever again. One another side, Stannis feels conflicted about having to punish Alester, who is his family by marriage, and being aware that House Florent has been stripped of all its possessions and seat, even if they are still holding them at the moment. Stannis has failed the Florents and his other lords bannermen by losing in King's Landing, and feels conflicted about having to sentence Alester to death. However, he makes up his mind and tells Davos and Axell that Alester will be executed for his crime.

Stannis presents to Davos the plan Axell and Salladhor made to raid Claw Isle, massacre the island's entire population, and loot all the wealth rumored to reside within House Celtigar's castle, in retaliation for Lord Ardrian Celtigar who swore allegiance to Joffrey after he was captured in the Battle of the Blackwater. Giving him a threatening stare, Axell waits for Davos to express approval for the plan, only for Davos to argue in favor of sparing Claw Isle and calling the plan evil and a folly. Stannis agrees with Davos that it is evil and dismisses the idea. Axell is upset and argues about Davos showing sympathy to the traitor Ardrian, who even now stays at court in King's Landing to avoid Stannis's wrath. When Davos points out that Stannis had abandoned his rightful king when he was eighteen during Robert's Rebellion, the enraged Axell declares Davos a traitor for his words and calls for his execution. Irritated, Stannis dismisses him and raises Davos to Lord of the Rainwood, Admiral of the Narrow Sea, and his new Hand of the King. Confronting Davos for having attempted to murder Melisandre, Stannis tells him that the priestess had nothing to do with the deaths of Davos' four eldest sons. Instead, Stannis blames the late Ser Imry Florent for taking his fleet straight into Tyrion's trap without sending any men to scout ahead, as well as he blames himself for losing the battle.

Stannis has changed his title of Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, to that of King of Westeros, as he now claims the whole continent as a whole kingdom, even the wild northern lands beyond the Wall, and refuses to use the nomenclature of the days when it was divided in seven kingdoms when the Targaryens started their conquest. The garrison of Dragonstone is awaiting for the imminent siege of the island and castle by the Iron Throne forces of the allied Lannisters and Tyrells, and Stannis is advised to escape back to Storm's End. Axell, Selyse, and Melisandre advise Stannis to sacrifice his nephew Edric Storm to the red priestess' flames, in order to awake Dragonstone's stone dragons, through the alleged power of king's blood, and for Stannis to become Azor Ahai reborn. Stannis, however, is skeptical about the ritual, and refuses to kill Edric unless he has evidence that Melisandre's magic can achieve such thing as awaking statues. Instead, Stannis forces Melisandre to use samples of Edric's blood, contained in leeches used by Maester Pylos treating a fever caught by the boy. Stannis throws three leeches full of Edric's blood into a brazier, citing the names of three enemy kings, Joffrey Baratheon, Balon Greyjoy, and Robb Stark.

As weeks pass, Salladhor Saan's pirates and spies frequenting King's Landing's port bring major news back to Dragonstone, one day informing Stannis that King Balon has suddenly died falling off a roped bridge during a storm at Pyke in the Iron Islands. Despite Balon's sudden unexpected death in his own royal seat, Stannis remains skeptical and takes in consideration the fact it might have been a natural accident and the result of the Iron Islands' infamous harsh weather.

Several days later, however, Salladhor's pirates deliver word about the death of King Robb and the massacre of his army at the Twins at the hands of Lord Walder Frey. Axell and Selyse celebrate the deaths of two rival kings, leaving only Stannis and Joffrey as the remaining of the five kings of the war. Axell and Selyse keep urging Stannis to burn Edric, as they try to persuade him that the deaths of two kings in such a short length of time should be enough proof of R'hllor's might. Selyse insists that the boy is only the product of folly and lust of Stannis's brother Robert and Selyse's cousin Delena. The queen is convinced that Edric's birth in her own wedding cursed her and Stannis, and because of this the two have been able to have sons. She believes that if Edric is killed, especially as a sacrifice to the Lord of Light, their curse will be lifted and Stannis will finally have male heirs. Stannis refuses to sacrifice his nephew until Joffrey dies, and until then he will still consider Balon's death a coincidental accident and Robb's death a coincidental casualty of war, neither of the two divine intervention. Selyse and Axell do not mind, as they are confident that Joffrey will soon perish like Balon and Robb, and since he is currently considered the war's winner, his death at the peak of his power and rise, whilst surrounded by his own court and sworn protectors, will surely be the ultimate sign of R'hllor's might and divine intervention.

After King Joffrey is murdered during his own wedding feast in King's Landing, the queen's men celebrate at Dragonstone and thank the Lord of Light at the nightfire. To prevent Melisandre from burning Edric Storm, Lord Davos smuggles the boy from the island aboard one of Salladhor Saan's ships to the Free City of Lys, with a small group of king's men loyal to Stannis as the boy's guardians and companions. Although only Tommen Baratheon is left now, Melisandre warns Stannis that new enemy kings will replace the ones who died. Axell claims to be able to see visions in flames, but Melisandre is skeptical of his ability. Stannis is finally made aware by Davos about the Night's Watch's missive previously dismissed by Alester, which tells about the Black Brothers' defeat at the Fist of the First Men beyond the Wall against the army of the dead, as well Maester Aemon's warning that the wildlings are about to conquer the Wall and invade the North.

Expecting to lose Dragonstone to the Lannisters, Stannis decides to take his wife and daughter and Axell with him in the planned sea voyage to the Wall. A small garrison led by Ser Rolland Storm is left to hold Dragonstone against the Iron Throne forces, who are expected to eventually appear and invade with the Arbor's fleet as soon as Tywin deals with his son Tyrion's trial for regicide. Stannis allows Melisandre to burn Lord Alester Florent alive in order to obtain favorable winds for their journey to Eastwatch-by-the-Sea. When bound to a post, Alester remains silent and dignified, but as the flames begin to touch him, he starts screaming in pain, until he eventually perishes.

Stannis's host, all cavalry and highly made of Florents, sails to the Wall aboard Salladhor Saan's pirate fleet. While they travel, the Wall is invaded by the wildlings and multiple skirmishes and two major battles take place, notably at Castle Black and at the Bridge of Skulls not too far from the Shadow Tower. The Baratheon army reaches Eastwatch-by-the-Sea as the Wall is still under wildling invasion. Stannis leaves Selyse, Axell, Shireen, and Davos at Eastwatch with a household made of queen's men knights, sworn swords, and men-at-arms, lady companions, servants, maid attendants, the fool Patchface, Salladhor Saan and his pirates, and the Night's Watch garrison in the castle, while he and Melisandre depart beyond the Wall with the mounted host, guided by Eastwatch's commander Cotter Pyke and a group of his rangers, riding together to Castle Black from north of the Wall to attack Mance Rayder's massive host.

During the Battle Beneath the Wall, the Black Brother steward Jon Snow spots House Florent's banners amongst the other banners in Stannis's host attacking the free folk camp. Mance Rayder's fighting forces are first lured outside the Haunted Forest by Eastwatch's rangers of the Night's Watch led by Cotter Pyke, before they are surrounded by Stannis who commands columns of heavy horse of 1,500 southron knights who wash over the wildlings. Melisandre burns the late Orell's eagle with firemagic, killing the animal and temporarily maddening the skinchanger Varamyr Sixskins, who was using it. Varamyr is taken out of the eagle's body and falls to the ground in pain, whilst his beasts are set loose. During the battle between the knights and the free folk, the raider Harma Dogshead is killed, while one of Tormund's sons, Dormund, is slain by a knight with moths on his shield, possibly Ser Richard Horpe. Mance's horse is also slain, causing him to fall and get captured. As the wildlings break and begin to flee, the giants hold longer and continue fighting aboard their mammoths, but are eventually defeated and forced to retreat. Ser Godry Farring kills an escaping giant. Stannis's host kills 1,000 wildlings and captures 1,000 others, all men, women, and children of all ages, whilst the majority of the free folk flee in terror and disappear within the Haunted Forest with their families and children and the giants. Mance, his baby son just born in that very battle, and his sister-in-law Val are captured by Stannis' men, along with numerous clan leaders and raiders, including Sigorn, the new Magnar of Thenn and son of the late Styr. Mance's wife Dalla dies giving birth to her son and her body is found by the knights.

After the free folk are defeated, the Florents and Stannis's host takes residence at Castle Black while the wildling captives are all gathered within a fence beyond the Wall, guarded by Stannis' knights. Some wildling women and girls are raped by them, resulting with Stannis gelding them as a punishment. As none of the wildlings are allowed to leave, some babies die to the lack of proper conditions. Florent and Meadows banners are spotted flying everywhere in the castle by Samwell Tarly, maternal grandson of the late Alester. While Stannis takes authority over the Wall and forces his control on the Night's Watch, with Melisandre by his side, his wife Selyse and Axell remain at Eastwatch with Shireen.

During their stay at Castle Black, Stannis's host, known to include many brutes and aggressive figures, causes tension around the Night's Watch, as Stannis and many of his vassals are controlling, domineering, and some men even taunt Black Brothers and wildling captives. Stannis also threatens the Night's Watch to elect a new Lord Commander soon, or else he will place someone himself on his own will. From the day Stannis came, now the Wall has nightfires, chants, and prayers to the Lord of Light for humanity's victory in the Long Night that Never Ends, taking place every early dark morning until dawn, under Melisandre, and some Black Brothers and wildlings join them eventually, and convert to the foreign religion.

Samwell Tarly discusses his plan with Jon Snow to send the wildling girl Gilly and her baby son to Sam's mother, Melessa Florent, at Horn Hill, in the guise of the baby being Sam's bastard offspring, while in reality the baby is the trueborn inbred son of Gilly and her late husband-father Craster. As the baby's mere presence disgusts Stannis and many of the Watch's Black Brothers, Sam tells Jon that he knows that his mother would want him. Sam is confident that Melessa will also find some working place for Gilly and it would not be as hard as serving Craster.

At the Wall, Stannis and Melisandre reveal that they are aware of Maester Aemon's identity as a Targaryen. While discussing plans against the Others and Stannis's intention to take the Nightfort as his war seat in the North, Samwell Tarly and Stannis do not talk about the execution of the former's maternal grandfather, Lord Alester. It is not confirmed if Stannis informs him about Alester's death, or if Sam is aware of it in general, as House Florent's situation is never mentioned in Sam's thoughts, and it is possible he is not close to his mother's family. While at Castle Black, the Night's Watch's Commander of the Shadow Tower, Ser Denys Mallister, recalls that Sam's mother Lady Tarly is born a Florent, and mentions to Sam he once unhorsed Sam's grandfather Alester, as well as Sam's paternal Tarly grandfather, during a tourney.

A Feast for Crows[]

Selyse and Axell remain at Eastwatch-by-the-Sea with their household, Davos, and Shireen, while Stannis, his host, and Melisandre are at Castle Black. Jon Snow, the new Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, cedes the abandoned castle Nightfort to King Stannis after he demands it as payment for saving Castle Black's garrison. Fearing Stannis and Melisandre might burn Maester Aemon and Mance Rayder's infant son for their kingsblood, Jon has them sent along with Samwell Tarly, Gilly, and Dareon to Eastwatch-by-the-Sea for the sea voyage to Braavos across the Narrow Sea, and to Oldtown in the Reach.

Alester Florent is reported to have been sacrificed by Melisandre to R'hllor as a traitor. His son and heir Alekyne Florent becomes the head of House Florent and Lord of Brightwater Keep. Alester's wife and Samwell's maternal grandmother, Dowager Lady Melara Florent, née Crane, is now a widow. The Florents still hold their lands and castle in the Reach, as they await for the Tyrells to march against them. Although Tywin Lannister has also been murdered, Queen Cersei Lannister, who takes the regency on her son's behalf, still prepares to send Iron Throne armies to lay siege to Dragonstone and Storm's End, while Lord Garlan Tyrell is preparing another army to claim Brightwater Keep.

To escape Highgarden's wrath, Alekyne flees to Oldtown to seek refuge at the Hightower, where his sister Lady Rhea Hightower (née Florent) is the wife of Lord Leyton Hightower, who in turn is Mace Tyrell's father-in-law, the father of Mace's wife Lady Alerie Tyrell (née Hightower), and the maternal grandfather of Willas, Garlan, Loras, and Margaery. Alekyne's uncle, Ser Colin Florent, holds Brightwater Keep as the castellan.

Following Tommen's wedding to Margaery Tyrell, Garlan leaves King's Landing with his wife and his own army, marching back to the Reach with half the Tyrell military strength, to prepare to lay siege to Brightwater.

Garlan's preparations for a siege on Brightwater are interrupted by the unexpected invasion of the Reach by the Iron Islands' army with their many fleets and the Iron Fleet, commanded by King Euron III Greyjoy. After news comes of the taking of the Shields, the noble houses of the Reach start massing their military strengths and organizing defenses of their settlements. Garlan begins to gather men from across the Reach to retake the Shield Islands from the ironborn. Lord Alekyne stays with his sister Rhea at Oldtown, while his brother-in-law has the defenses of the city's garrison organized. Euron is successfully conquering the Arbor, and it is believed that his next major targets will be Oldtown and Highgarden.

Ser Erren Florent is reported to be still held captive at Highgarden for now.

A Dance With Dragons[]

While King Stannis, Melisandre, and the majority of the Baratheon host are at Castle Black, Ser Axell Florent is in charge of Queen Selyse's household at Eastwatch-by-the-Sea. He uses the self-styled title of Queen's Hand. Eastwatch's garrison celebrate King Stannis's victory and Mance Rayder's defeat. During a feast with Cotter Pyke, officers and Brothers of the Night's Watch, as well as Selyse, Princess Shireen, Lord Davos Seaworth, Lord Salladhor Saan, and other knights sworn to Stannis, Axell mocks Davos by comparing him to an ape, still resenting him for taking the position of King's Hand. When Cotter sends letters to the new Lord Commander of the Night's Watch Jon Snow, he disparages Axell.

After receiving new orders from Stannis, Davos and Salladhor depart from Eastwatch with the whole Lysene pirate fleet for sea journey to White Harbor, to win House Manderly's support in Stannis's cause and campaign against House Bolton. Davos recalls how before they left Dragonstone, Melisandre burned Alester alive in order to obtain favorable winds for their expedition to the Wall.

After the execution and burning of Mance Rayder, Stannis compels the free folk captives to bend the knee to him, or else be sent back into the lands beyond the Wall at the mercy of the army of the dead. The majority of the wildlings bend the knee, the leaders swear allegiance to House Baratheon of Dragonstone, while a minority refuse, are released, and allowed to return to their people in the wild northern lands, with the offer to return and bend the knee still up for them any time, if they change idea. The wildlings are allowed to settle in the deserted Mole's Town in the lands of the Gift, and if they will cause trouble in the North, they will be punished or sent back north of the Wall.

The free folk south of the Wall bend the knee to King Stannis, with more and more coming from the beyond the Wall to surrender each day, in order to be granted passage. Stannis is making the Nightfort, the largest castle of the Wall, his wartime seat in the North. The Watch's Builders are to be sent working every day to fully restore the Nightfort, and it will take half a year to make it fit for habitation.

While Stannis and his mounted host march to fight the Boltons, Freys, and the ironborn invaders in the North, Selyse is unhappy and dissatisfied with her accommodations at Eastwatch and her treatment by its commander, Cotter Pyke. She decides to move with her household into the Nightfort, now that the Night's Watch gave it to her husband and is currently under repair.

The Florents still make over half of Stannis's army and march with him to the northern mountains to have its various clans join forces with House Baratheon of Dragonstone, stopping to have feasts with each major clan. Afterwards Stannis's host, now including a host of northern mountain clansmen, makes a secret march away from the kingsroad to the wolfswood, until reaching Deepwood Motte, the seat of House Glover, which is still under ironborn occupation. The Florents are part of the Fight by Deepwood Motte against House Greyjoy's ironborn garrison, which is led by the late Balon's daughter, Princess Asha Greyjoy, who has found herself exiled in the North after losing the kingsmoot to her uncle Euron. While Stannis's host attacks the ironborn, Bear Island's forces of House Mormont join the fight by cutting the ironmen's escape.

Asha and her surviving men are taken captives, with the most notable ironborn being ransomed and sent back to their homes. Deepwood Motte is restored to House Glover, and King Stannis gains much popular support from the North, with many northern houses and their respective vassals joining his host, including survivors of previous battles against the Boltons. After writing back to Lord Commander Snow at the Wall, and spending some days making preparations and gathering northern allies at Deepwood Motte, Stannis and his army begin their march to Winterfell, with the intent to take the castle from King Tommen's Warden of the North and Lord of the Dreadfort, Roose Bolton, who in recent times gained more infamy for his involvement in the Red Wedding massacre and for being Robb Stark's killer. Another major objective is to rescue Arya Stark (in reality Jeyne Poole), who has recently wed Ramsay Bolton, the new Lord of Winterfell. Dragging Asha along with them, Stannis's host, made of Florents and men of the Reach, the Stormlands, the Crownlands, and the North, starts its slow march to Winterfell, slowed down by the weather growing harsher. During the march more northmen join the host, whilst no word of Davos and Salladhor's mission to gain White Harbor's support has reached Stannis's army so far.

After finding out the Nightfort is near-habitable, Selyse and Axell leave Eastwatch for Castle Black with Shireen, Patchface, Selyse and Shireen's serving girls and lady companions, and a retinue of knights, sworn swords, and men-at-arms fifty strong. On their way to occupy the Nightfort, they are temporarily settling at Castle Black, Jon Snow giving Selyse the royal chamber in the King's Tower. Upon seeing the giant Wun Wun, Shireen is excited at witnessing a giant, while Axell is disgusted with him. Axell is interested in the beautiful "wildling princess" Val, Mance Rayder's sister-in-law and sister of Mance's late wife Dalla, who died of childbirth the day Stannis defeated the free folk.

Days later, Alys Karstark arrives at Castle Black and reveals that one of Stannis's supporters, her great-uncle Arnolf Karstark, is actually working with Roose Bolton in secret, and planning with his sons Cregan and Arthor, and several grandsons to have Alys' brother, Harrion Karstark, who is held captive at Maidenpool, killed by the Lannisters. This will give Arnolf and his sons the right to claim Karhold. After Cregan Karstark is captured and imprisoned in Castle Black's ice cells, Jon Snow sends a raven to Stannis informing him of Arnolf's true allegiance to Bolton. He then ruins Arnolf's ploy to claim Karhold by arranging a wedding between Alys and Sigorn the new Magnar of the Thenn, who bent the knee to Stannis. Should Harrion die, lordship of Karhold will pass to House Thenn instead. Clan leaders of the northern mountains, whose family members are fighting with Stannis, come to Castle Black to attend the wedding and discuss the free folk, who now live both beyond the Wall and in the lands of the Gift that Stannis and Jon granted them. Alys and Sigorn's wedding is done under the faith of R'hllor instead of the Old Gods, and the ceremony is performed by Melisandre. During the wedding feast, Axell makes a toast and dances with Selyse. House Thenn is founded as a new northern house, with the flames of R'hllor as its banner to honor Stannis's religion and the house's overlords, House Baratheon of Dragonstone.

After Val returns to Castle Black with the chieftain of a free folk host, Tormund Giantsbane, following a successful mission to retrieve him beyond the Wall, Jon Snow brings Val to Queen Selyse, who is informed of the bargain between Jon and Tormund. Selyse meets Val, who kneels to her and tells her the details of the bargain to grant over 3,000 more wildlings, plus giants, passage south of the Wall. Selyse reacts with excitement, stating that her husband will be proud. She states that now all the wildlings have to do is swear fealty to King Stannis and convert to R'hllor. Jon tells her that this was not part of the bargain, and Val adds that the free folk do no kneel. Selyse appears to be quite upset with this, but does not insist, leaving the matter to Stannis in the future.

Val is frightened of Shireen due to her greyscale scars, calling the disease "grey death", as it is known by the free folk. When Jon tells her that greyscale is not always fatal, that Shireen no longer has it, and that she only has the scars, Val adamantly insists that greyscale is only death and that there is no such thing as surival from the disease. She tells Jon that Shireen should be killed because she is putting everyone's life in danger, insisting that she is "not clean" and that she still has greyscale. Jon is horrified by Val's words and is grateful that Selyse and her queen's men did not hear them. Val refuses to let Gilly's baby - Craster's son, nicknamed by the Night's Watch "the monster" - and all the baby's wet nurses stay in the same tower as "the dead girl" Shireen, wanting them removed from the King's Tower - where Selyse and Shireen reside - at once. She insists that Shireen is already dead and that apparently neither Selyse nor Jon can see it.

After Tormund returns from beyond the Wall to Castle Black and brings the anticipated additional wildlings, over 3,000 of them, to surrender and deliver hostages to the Night's Watch (many giants and mammoths also come south of the Wall via sea through Eastwatch's edge of the Wall), Selyse and Axell go to meet the various prominent clan members and leaders. Selyse claims that the wildling Gerrick Kingsblood is the true King of the Wildlings, descended in an unbroken male line from Raymun Redbeard, a great King-Beyond-the-Wall. Tormund, however, corrects her by stating that Gerrick is descended from Raymun's younger brother, not the king, and adds that the kingship among the free folk is not hereditary, but chosen by the people. Selyse attires Gerrick in highborn clothes which once belonged to Stannis. Selyse arranges marriages between her queen's men and various free folk women, betrothing Axell to the eldest daughter of Gerrick Kingsblood. Two of her knights, Ser Brus Buckler and Ser Malegorn of Redpool are engaged to Gerrick's two other daughters. The marriages will be done in the name of the Lord of Light. Selyse also wants Val to marry one of her knights, Ser Patrek of King's Mountain, but is rebuffed. Among the numerous hostage wildling youths yielded to the Night's Watch for good behavior is also Gerrick's son. After House Thenn, Gerrick's family is the second wildling family to become nobility in the North; House Redbeard, vassals of House Baratheon of Dragonstone.

Selyse and Lord Snow discuss the situation of the countless free folk still living beyond the Wall and running from the Others. Cotter Pyke was previously sent by Jon with eleven ships from Eastwatch-by-the-Sea to rescue thousands more wildlings gathered at Hardhome, gathered there under Mother Mole's guidance. Cotter wrote a letter to Jon, informing him that many of the Watch's ships have been wrecked by near-winter storms during the sea voyage. Cotter reached Hardhome with six ships left, but the situation there has grown dramatic, as the wildlings are eating their own dead and the whole ruined town is surrounded by undead wights in the forest and in the sea. Lysene pirate slavers from Essos, have also already taken hundreds of wildling women and children to Braavos, after desperate men, unaware of the sailors' true identities, begged them to take them away from Hardhome, due to the lack of food (Arya Stark in Braavos learns that the city's Sealord seized the ship Goodheart, arrested its pirates, and took the wildling women and children under custody, while the ship Elephant may have made it back to Lys with its cargo of wildling slaves). The wildlings also attempted to take the Night's Watch's ship Storm Crow by force, which costed the lives of six of Cotter's crew. Cotter desperately needs help and reinforcements from his Lord Commander, via land since traveling north by the sea in these times is far too dangerous.

Selyse's household, the Night's Watch, and the wildling leaders discuss the Hardhome problem. Selyse and Lord Steward Bowen Marsh advocate letting everyone at Hardhome die, believing they are already doomed. Selyse is especially convinced it is too late for them, possibly due to Melisandre's vision in her flames of an incoming massacre beneath the snow, done by the dead in the impossible cold mist of the Others, killing "one by one" until nothing but death remained. It is likely that Selyse interprets Melisandre's vision as a complete massacre in Hardhome, with no survivors. But Jon plans to lead a ranging by land instead.

However, things at Castle Black grow worse when the Night's Watch receives a sudden letter from Winterfell, containing Ramsay Bolton's claim to have defeated all of Stannis Baratheon's forces, including the Florents and the northmen, and to have killed Stannis and six wildling spear wives that Melisandre previously sent with Mance Rayder to Winterfell in the attempt to rescue "Arya Stark". Ramsay claims to have Stannis's magic red sword Lightbringer and to hold Mance Rayder captive in a cage, intending to reveal to the North that Stannis and Jon lied to them about his execution. Ramsay now demands Jon to hand him over Selyse, Shireen, Melisandre, Ramsay's wife Arya, Stannis's "prize" and wildling princess Val, Mance's infant son (actually Gilly's son, while Mance's is at Oldtown in the Reach with Sam and Gilly), as well as "his Reek". Failure to comply will result in Ramsay launching offensives against the Night's Watch. Tormund does not believe Ramsay's words without evidence, and Jon decides to join Stannis's host with volunteer free folk reinforcements, while Tormund receives command of the planned ranging to Hardhome. While on his way to show Ramsay's letter to Selyse, Jon is suddenly ambushed and stabbed multiple times by an angry group of Black Brothers led by Bowen Marsh.

The Winds of Winter[]

House Florent's army is camped with Stannis Baratheon's host in an abandoned crofter's village, three days far from Winterfell. Despite struggling with the cold, Stannis's forces are still preparing for battle and sending guerrilla parties against Winterfell led by Mors Umber, who also retrieved "Arya Stark" and Theon Greyjoy after they escaped, and delivered them to King Stannis. An emissary of the Iron Bank of Braavos, Tycho Nestoris, also arrives at the camp with released ironborn warriors to strike a bargain with Stannis to lend him money to support him against Queen Cersei Lannister, who stopped paying the Iron Throne's monthly due to the Iron Bank. Stannis imprisoned Theon with his sister Asha, and also imprisons Arnolf and Arthor Karstark, three of Arnolf's grandsons, and House Bolton's maester Tybald. He sends Alysane Mormont with the fake Arya to Castle Black, along with Ser Justin Massey as Tycho's escort. Then, Justin is to escort Tycho back to Eastwatch-by-the-Sea to take the ship back to Braavos, where Justin is to hire an army of sellswords for Stannis, with the money lended by the Iron Bank. Even if he dies, Stannis wants his vassals to continue fighting to put Shireen on the Iron Throne.

Roose Bolton has been struggling with infighting, mutual hatred between his own bannermen over the Red Wedding, and even murders within Winterfell. As these growing tensions and the limited winter provvisions make him unable to endure a siege in the castle, with his bannermen and allies fighting each other, Roose has dispatched a cavalry army made of men of the Houses Frey and Manderly and led by Ser Hosteen Frey to destroy Stannis's army, who are in turn waiting for them near a frozen lake in what will be the Battle in the Ice.

Trivia[]

  • Although there are not many villainous members of the House of Florent, those who are villains are among the most disliked characters of A Song of Ice and Fire.
    • Selyse Florent is known as one of the most heinous characters and massively disliked by the community, especially her television counterpart.
    • Although he only briefly appears in the TV series, and as a victim, Selyse's uncle Axell Florent is also notorious and disliked among fans of the novels.
  • Shireen Baratheon and Edric Storm are both children from the houses Florent and Baratheon.
  • In the television series Game of Thrones, the only Florents to appear are Selyse, Axell and Alester merged into one character, Imry, and Melessa. All of them except Selyse are only featured in one episode each.
    • Imry is featured in Season 2, Axell in Season 4, and Melessa in Season 6. Rylene is also mentioned during Season 3, but as Shireen's cousin, while in the novels she is her aunt.
  • In the television series, Imry Florent's role is smaller than in the novels. Like in the novels, he fights in Stannis's royal fleet and is on Stannis's own ship, Fury. But unlike in the novels, Imry is not in charge of the fleet nor in command of Fury, as Davos Seaworth has the command of the fleet instead, while Stannis is personally commanding the Fury instead of leading an army on the other shore of the Blackwater.
    • The TV version makes Davos responsible for falling for Tyrion Lannister's trap, giving Stannis a reason to be less friendly towards him during Season 3. Tyrion's trap in the TV series is also completely different than the novels, being sneaky and not sacrificing a single man. The novels feature a whole naval battle, a huge chain to close the Blackwater's mouth between two watchtowers, three huge trebuchets, and the destruction and sacrifice of Joffrey Baratheon's entire royal fleet and killing most of his men. In the novels, Stannis, who is watching the river battle from the kingswood with his army, is furious at Imry for falling to Tyrion's trap, due to Imry's overconfidence and refusal to bother sending scouts to check the city and river's defenses, before entering the river.
    • Unlike his novel counterpart, Imry does not die to wildfire in the television series, where Stannis is in command of the Fury instead of Imry, and the ship stays at Blackwater Bay outside the river, while Davos takes most of the fleet towards the river's mouth. In the novels, Stannis's host is divided into a land cavalry and infantry army with a vanguard and scouts, and the naval fleet. The former is commanded by Stannis and Ser Guyard Morrigen, while Imry commands the fleet, with Davos serving as one of the many captains. Unlike in the novel, which features a more strategic battle on Stannis's part, the television version has Stannis's army only attack frontally from the naval fleet. The fate and whereabouts of Imry's TV counterpart after the assault of King's Landing are never revealed in the TV show, making it unclear if he died at any point.
  • While in the television series' version Selyse displays a contemptuous behavior towards her daughter Shireen and even suggests striking her, her book counterpart does not hate Shireen and is protective of her.
  • In the television series, Alester and Axell's characters are merged into a single Lord of Brightwater Keep named Axell, who physically resembles Alester more. While in the novels, both Lord Alester and Ser Axell are Selyse's uncles, Lord Axell in the TV series is Selyse and Imry's older brother, while the youngest sibling, Erren Florent is never mentioned.
    • This condensed version of Alester and Axell is not portrayed as villainous nor as a criminal, and does not even take the worship of R'hllor. In the novels, both Alester and Axell took the foreign religion, although the former only to appease his king and niece queen, and Alester is executed for attempting to offer Shireen as a hostage to Tywin Lannister by marrying her to Tommen Baratheon, in order to force Stannis to surrender and bend the knee to Joffrey. Axell's novel counterpart is one of the most fanatical supporters of R'hllor, who already forsake the Seven long before Stannis accepted Melisandre's help.
    • In the TV series, Lord Axell is simply executed and burned alive along with a woman and other prisoners (either family members or other offenders) just for insubordination, which is refusing to burn holy figures of the Seven. In the novels, it is Lord Guncer Sunglass who is burned alive for similar charges and Ser Hubard Rambton and his three sons who oppose the destruction of Dragonstone's sept.
      • However, unlike in the books, Sunglass and two sons of Rambton are arrested for treason and mass murder, not for insubordination. Sunglass no longer recognizes Stannis as his king, and Rambton and his sons murder four queen's men while they are attempting to defend the sept from being vandalized, with Hubard and one son getting killed in action in the process. Unlike in the TV series, Stannis in the novels does not consent their execution, as prisoners at Dragonstone - including Sunglass and Rambton's two other sons - are burned alive as sacrifices by Melisandre on Selyse's consent and orders, while Stannis is fighting on the mainland. When Stannis returns to Dragonstone, there are no more burnings until Alester's execution before departing to the Wall. In the novel version, Stannis refuses to burn non-believers, especially because half of his followers, and later the northern houses fighting in his host, are not even believers. The burnings of Sunglass and the Rambtons take place during the second book, while Lord Florent's television counterpart is executed during Season 4, which is overall an adaptation of the final chapters of the third book A Storm of Swords, with certain parts and chapters of the fourth and fitfth book as well.
  • In the novels, Alester Florent serves as Stannis's Hand of the King, and is subsequently replaced by Davos following his arrest. In the TV series, Davos is already named Stannis's Hand during Season 2's final episodes.
  • Due to Edric Storm being replaced by Gendry in the television series, there is no mention of Delena Florent and her sexual encounter with Robert Baratheon.
  • In the novels, Selyse, her daughter Shireen, Axell, and Davos (Davos never met Jon Snow so far) are left at Eastwatch-by-the-Sea with Salladhor Saan's fleet and a household by Stannis, when he passes the Wall from Eastwatch's gate to ride to Castle Black from the northern side. During the later chapters of the fifth book, Selyse, Axell, Shireen, and their whole household leave Eastwatch and take residence at Castle Black, many weeks after Stannis, Davos, and Salladhor left the Wall. By the time Selyse and Axell arrive at Castle Black with their entourage, Stannis is already fighting against the Boltons and the ironborn invaders with his army, and Davos and the pirate fleet departed Eastwatch to a sea journey to White Harbor long before that. Melisandre, Devan Seaworth and household guards remained for her at Castle Black, along with the conquered wildlings.
    • While Stannis is away, Selyse arranges the political deals and alliances with the free folk, with Jon Snow's help, forming House Thenn and House Redbeard, the first free folk noble houses, which serve under House Baratheon of Dragonstone. Some wildlings even convert to the worship of R'hllor.
  • In the television series, Selyse, Shireen, and Davos already come to Castle Black during the final episode of Season 4, after Stannis defeats Mance Rayder's host. Selyse and Jon Snow never interact onscreen throughout her stay, and during the middle of Season 5, Selyse, Shireen, Davos, and Melisandre all depart from Castle Black and are part of Stannis's host, which marches straight to Winterfell and does not fight against the ironmen, nor gains the support of the North like in the novels. In this version Davos is never sent to White Harbor and his storyline is entirely omitted, and Stannis's fleet stays at Eastwatch and is lended to the Night's Watch, who use them for the Hardhome rescue mission, while in the novels, the Watch have their own ships at Eastwatch, although they lost most of them on the sea voyage to Hardhome. Selyse commits suicide in Season 5's finale, after watching her daughter's sacrifice. Selyse's role and administrative involvement in the television series has been omitted entirely, as well as her work with the wildling princess Val, Jon Snow, and Tormund, her arrangements of marriages between wildling girls and Baratheon vassals, and her role as advising Jon how to handle the wildlings still living north of the Wall and Hardhome. Also, unlike in the novels, Jon never interacts with Axell, whose TV counterpart merged with Alester is already deceased.
  • In the novels, Selyse and Axell - as well as Stannis as Shireen - are still alive, and Alester and Imry are the only Florents who have been killed. Selyse and Axell are currently at Castle Black, along with Shireen, Melisandre, Patchface, Devan Seaworth, and the rest of their household knights, men-at-arms, servants, and lady companions. While Selyse manages the free folk, they are on their way to take their household to assume residence at the Nightfort, Stannis's new seat at the Wall and abandoned castle, which is expected to be habitable the next year.
