House Lannister of Casterly Rock are some of the main antagonists of the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series and its television adaptation Game of Thrones.

One of the Great Houses of Westeros as well as having Andal origin, their sigil is a golden lion on a red background. Lannister traits include golden curly hair and green eyes. The Lannisters are known for being the wealthiest house in Westeros, with their source of income originating from the gold mines of the Westerlands. They are also notorious for their ruthlessness, underhandedness, and general lack of honor, the exact opposite of House Stark.

This reputation is fairly new, being fabricated by the deeds of Lord Tywin Lannister. Under Lord Tywin and his daughter Cersei, House Lannister as a whole, frequently serve a villainous and antagonistic role and also employ other brutal characters, such as Ser Gregor Clegane, Ser Amory Lorch, and the Brave Companions. They serve under their overlord family, House Baratheon of King's Landing, which was founded by King Robert I Baratheon.

While Cersei claims that her children are all Robert's, they are, in fact, secretly bastards born of incest between the queen and her twin brother, Jaime. After Robert died, most Baratheon retainers rode back to the Stormlands to follow Renly or Stannis Baratheon. Due to all of the royal children being Lannisters, and the Lannister army effectively serving as the royal army, House Lannister is the de-facto ruling family of the Seven Kingdoms, with House Baratheon of King's Landing being only a puppet house.

History

House Lannister was supposedly founded during the Age of Heroes by the legendary figure Lann the Clever, who swindled Casterly Rock from House Casterly using nothing but his wits.

Reyne-Tarbeck Revolt

Prelude

During the reign of Lord Tytos Lannister, House Lannister grew weak and less feared throughout Westeros, due to Tytos being a weak lord, as he, similar to King Aenys I Targaryen, is quick-to-forgive and always sought to be loved. Taking advantage of this, many bannermen and merchants began borrowing money without even bothering to pay their debts. Lady Ellyn Reyne, through her brothers, Lord Roger and Reynard Reyne, used the wealth she borrowed from the Lannisters to rebuild the crumbling castle of Tarbeck Hall, the seat of her second husband Lord Walderan Tarbeck.

In 260 AC, when Tytos' firstborn son, Tywin, returned from the Stepstones, in the aftermath of the War of the Ninepenny Kings, he made it his responsibility to restore his family's might and power, even if Lord Tytos was reluctant to do so, and he demanded those that had borrowed money from House Lannister, to repay the loans they owed to his father and threatened that those who do not pay back are ordered to send in hostages to Casterly Rock. Upon reading Tywin's edicts, Lord Roger Reyne, the eldest of Lady Ellyn's brothers, just laughed in response and he advises his friends and vassals to do nothing with it. When Lord Walderan Tarbeck travelled to Casterly Rock, hoping to confront Lord Tytos and convince him to rescind his son's edicts, however, he was instead imprisoned by Tywin himself.

This caused Lady Ellyn to retaliate by seizing two Lannisters at Lannisport and then Stafford Lannister, the brother of Tywin's cousin Joanna, who was betrothed to Tywin. When Ellyn threatened to kill them if her husband is harmed, Lord Tytos ignored his son's suggestion of sending Lord Tarbeck in three pieces, with each of them for each of the Lannister's Lady Ellyn had seized. Walderan was released unharmed during an exchange and Tytos forgave House Tarbeck's debt to House Lannister.

Rebellion

Despite this, this did not stop Tywin. In 261 AC, he sent ravens to both Houses Tarbeck and Reyne, demanding that they come to Casterly Rock to answer for their crimes. Just as he had expected it, this provokes both vassal houses to renounce their allegiance/fealty to House Lannister and they rose in revolt. Tywin then raised his army and marched out of Casterly Rock to engage them in battle without his father's leave.

Lord Walderan had no time to rally his banners since Tywin and his army had marched on Tarbeck hall so suddenly. As a result, Walderan's army only consisted of his household knights. In a short battle, Tywin defeated Lord Tarbeck and his army was butchered whilst his last surviving son from his first marriage was killed in the battle. Walderan was then taken captive along with two of his sons from his second marriage before they were executed without mercy and their heads were impaled on spears.

Expecting a long siege, Lady Ellyn sent ravens to Castamere, the seat of House Reyne, as she sought aid from her brothers. However, Tywin, in less then a day, had prepared siege engines, which were used to hurl boulders into Tarbeck Hall, causing the castle to collapse, killing both Lady Ellyn and her son Tion. When the gates were opened, Tywin commanded that the now-ruined castle be put to the torch. The ruins of Tarbeck Hall were set alight and the castle burned until nothing is left but a blackened empty shell. While it burned down, Lord Roger Reyne had arrived too late with his army of 2,000 hastily-gathered men from an exhausting march. He was forced to watch as the castle burns. Hoping that the element of surprise would give him an advantage, Roger sounded the attack. The Lannister army was quick to recover after the first shock, and seeing the number of soldiers in Tywin's army, Roger Reyne was forced to retreat back to Castamere. As he fled, half of his army were killed while he was wounded by an arrow between his shoulders. This caused him to be carried back to his castle. As the wound began to fester, this caused Lord Roger to suffer from a fever.

His younger brother, Ser Reynard Reyne, was given command of the surviving Reyne forces. The Reynes took refuge in Castamere while Reynard led his people and remaining men down into the castle's mines, which was where House Reyne got their wealth. When Tywin arrived at Castamere three days later, Reynard believed he has the advantage, as he thought that Tywin couldn't fight his way down into the mines. He then sent terms of surrender in which House Reyne will be loyal vassals to the Lannisters and in return, Tywin's brothers will serve as hostages in Castamere.

Rains of Castamere

Ignoring Ser Reynard's terms, Tywin ordered his men to seal all the entrances to the mouth of the mines, in which they are all completely blocked with stone, earth and soil. The Lannister men were then ordered by Tywin to dam a nearby stream and divert it to the nearest mine entrance. As a result, the water from the stream went through the tiny gaps in the rubble that blocked the entrance. Tywin's men claimed that they heard screaming and shouting and by daybreak all was silent. With the mines of Castamere now flooded with water from the diverted stream, all 300 people, including men, women, and children, inside never saw the light of day again for they all drowned along with Ser Reynard and Lord Roger Reyne. Castamere was then put to the torch.

Legacy

In the aftermath of the revolt, Houses Tarbeck and Reyne were completely annihilated, leaving them extinct. The ruins of both Castamere and Tarbeck hall were left as a reminder to all who would dare scorn the power of House Lannister while the mines of Castamere remained sealed to this day. Tywin Lannister's ways in crushing the Reyne-Tarbeck revolt secured his reputation as a feared but respected figure in all of Westeros. This earns the attention of Aerys II Targaryen, who was impressed with Tywin's ruthless handling of the rebellion, and proceeded to name him Hand of the King. Though Tywin's brutality was severely disapproved upon by some, everyone agreed that order in the Westerlands is restored.

Because of Tywin's success in dealing with the Reynes and Tarbecks, House Lannister's power was restored and it was immortalized in the gloomy song The Rains of Castamere, which was then used whenever to remind any unruly or troubled houses that they might also suffer the same fate, which would install them with fear.

Robert's Rebellion

Though House Lannister remained loyal to House Targaryen throughout most of Aerys' reign, however, the latter's relationship with Tywin began to deteriorate, due to Aerys' growing insanity. The final straw was when the Mad King named Tywin's eldest son, Ser Jaime Lannister, to the Kingsguard, which crushed Tywin's plans of making Jaime the heir to Casterly Rock. Infuriated, Tywin made an excuse that he is ill and resigns as Hand of the King before returning to Casterly Rock. He sat throughout most of Robert's Rebellion, a revolt launched by Houses Arryn Baratheon, and Stark, in rebellion against King Aerys. Tywin ignored calls for aid from both the rebels and loyalists. After Aerys' son and heir Prince Rhaegar was killed in battle by Lord Robert Baratheon, House Lannister immediately sided with the rebels.

Sack of King's Landing

Tywin led a force of 12,000 men to King's Landing, reaching the capital ahead of the rebels. When he requested entrance into the city, Varys, the Master of Whisperers, warns King Aerys to keep the gates closed, but Grand Maester Pycelle, who hoped that Tywin will become king, urges the Mad King to open the gates. Listening to Pycelle, Aerys opens the gates, allowing Tywin and his army to enter. However, the Lannisters soon betrayed the Mad king and proceeded to sack King's Landing, slaughtering people of all ages and raping women they find. Meanwhile in the Red Keep, Aerys was betrayed and killed by Jaime Lannister, the only remaining Kingsguard in the castle. To prove his loyalty to Robert Baratheon and that House Lannister had permanently forsaken House Targaryen, Tywin ordered his bannermen, Ser Gregor Clegane and Ser Amory Lorch, to kill Princess Elia Martell along with Rhaegar's children, Prince Aegon and Princess Rhaenys. While Ser Amory murdered Rhaenys by stabbing her to death, Ser Gregor smashed Prince Aegon's head against a wall before raping and murdering Elia.

In the aftermath of the sack, when Robert Baratheon arrived at the Red Keep, Tywin presents the bodies of Elia, Aegon, and Rhaenys in crimson cloaks, which concealed the blood, as a token of fealty. Edward Stark, the Lord of Winterfell was outraged and disgusted with the murder of the royal family as he believed that the actions of House Lannister had dishonored Robert's cause. Moreover, to his disappointment, Robert himself was pleased with their deaths and he even ignored the advice of stripping Ser Jaime Lannister of his white cloak, since he had broken his oath by killing the Mad King. To make matters worse for House Lannister and Tywin, their actions earned them the hatred of not only the population of King's Landing but also House Martell of Dorne. Furious over the death of Princess Elia and her children, Prince Doran Martell, the ruling Prince of Dorne, held a strong hatred for Tywin and House Lannister while his brother, Prince Oberyn, attempted to launch a rebellion against the newly-crowned King Robert, but this was nulled when Jon Arryn visited Dorne. While all talks of revolt ended after that, Doran and Oberyn would continue to secretly plot a Targaryen restoration as well as seeking revenge against Tywin and House Lannister.

In Essos, Viserys Targaryen and his sister Daenerys, resentfully referred to Tywin and Jaime as one of the Usurper's Dogs, as their actions allowed Robert, who is referred to as the Usurper by Targaryen loyalists, to secure his claim to the Iron Throne. Daenerys, however, also referred to Lord Eddard Stark as one of the Usurper's Dogs as well, due to not seeing the difference between the roles of House Lannister and House Stark, though she didn't care about it at all.

A Song of Ice and Fire

During the events of the main series, they war against the Baratheons, the Starks, and the Tullys over the right to rule the Seven Kingdoms, as the Lannisters support King Joffrey I Baratheon, while the Starks rebelled against the Iron Throne and fought the Lannisters initially for revenge for killing Lord Eddard Stark, later to free the Riverlands and get the Stark girls back so that they could ride back in the North and close it to the Lannisters. The victory of the Lannisters and the Tyrells against King Stannis Baratheon was the day of the solidification of the Lannister power in the south and the end of the first phase of the War of the Five Kings. After that, Lord Tywin then refused to aid either King Balon Greyjoy and King Robb Stark in their war for the north, stating that the two were kings and since they had both insulted King Joffrey, they had no reason to be friends, thus the protection of their kingdoms was their problem. The Lannisters also rejected Bowen Marsh's call for aid for the Night's Watch against Mance Rayder's army beyond the Wall until Lord Janos Slynt would be made Lord Commander, and the Watch would stop being neutral.

After the massacre at the Twins, during Lord Edmure Tully's wedding, later known as the Red Wedding, (secretly orchestrated by Tywin Lannister and Walder Frey), the Lannisters gain control over most of the Riverlands. Later Joffrey is shortly thereafter poisoned during his own wedding feast, and then Tywin Lannister is killed by his long-abused son Tyrion shortly a short time later. The war in the Riverlands resulted with an invasion of mass refugees who become Sparrows and King Tommen I's royal court goes in a power struggle between Cersei, Kevan Lannister, Mace Tyrell, and other nobles.

Game of Thrones

In the TV Series, Cersei Lannister becomes the new Queen of the Seven Kingdoms after destroying the Great Sept of Baelor and slaughtering most of her enemies (and dozens if not hundreds of people too). Cersei forges an alliance with King Euron Greyjoy, who later becomes the captain of the Iron Throne fleet. Queen Daenerys Targaryen comes to Westeros intending to seize the Iron Throne from the Lannisters. Even after the common enemy of the White Walkers is revealed to the Iron Throne, Cersei arrogantly refuses to work with Daenerys and Jon Snow against them, prompting a disgusted Jaime Lannister to abandon her. 

After defeating the Night King Jaime decided to return to Kings Landing and Cersei. During the sack of Kings Landing he made his way inside a crumbling Red Keep and found Cersei. The two attempted to escape through the Keep's crypt, but found their way blocked. The two were crushed to death as the crypt collapsed around them.

After the deaths of Cersei and Jaime, Tyrion is presumably the head of the House and Lord of Casterly Rock.

Members of House Lannister are well-known for being comely; they have fair, golden hair and emerald-colored eyes. in addition, they wear crimson cloaks. Their household guard and men-at-arms are known as Red Cloaks. Along with wearing anything red and gold colored, Lannister knights and generals also wear red capes and beautiful golden armor, enamored with golden lions.

An ancient branch of House Lannister in the Westerlands who live in the city of Lannisport, rather than the main branch's seat of Casterly Rock. Neither their words nor their arms are known. Members of the family often have the same blond hair as the main branch. According to semi-canon sources they rule the city or are at least gentry.

A new noble house from Castle Darry in the Riverlands. The new houses' sigil is the Lion of Lannister, gold on red, quartered with the Darry plowman.

Traitor Sworn Bannermen

The most unruly bannermen of the westerlands, sworn rivals of House Lanniser who tried to take over the westerlands, taking advantage of Lord Tytos Lannister's weakness, until his son and heir, Ser Tywin, intervened. As a punishment for years of disrespect, insult, and open mockery, Tywin eradicated the whole houses of Reyner and Tarbeck, killing almost every single member, including the children and tearing down their castles:

• Lord {Roger Reyne}, known as the Red Lion of Castamere, Lord of Castamere. Slain during the Fall of Castamere.
  • Ser {Reynard Reyne}, his younger brother. Slain during the Fall of Castamere.
• Lord {Walderan Tarbeck}, Lord of Tarbeck Hall, described as muttonheaded. Slain during the Fall of Tarbeck Hall.
  • Lady {Ellyn Reyne}, last known as Ellyn Tarbeck, his wife and younger sister of Roger Reyne. The main cause of the rebellion. Initially betrothed to Tywald Lannister, married first to Ser Tion Lannister, and last to Lord Walderan Tarbeck, with whom she had three children. Slain during the Fall of Tarbeck Hall.
    • Rohanne Tarbeck, his first daughter. Forced to join the silent sisters.
      • {The last Lord Tarbeck}, the young son of Rohanne. Presumably killed by Ser Amory Lorch.
    • Cyrelle Tarbeck, his second daughter. Forced to join the silent sisters.
    • {Tion Tarbeck}, known as Tion the Red, Walderan's youngest son. Died with his mother when Tarbeck Hall's keep collapsed on them.

  • King Gerold II Lannister, son of King Tyrion III, who took the same approach as his father regarding the Andal invaders.

• Ser Joffrey Lydden, married the only daughter of Gerold III, adopted the Lannister name and arms as his own. First Andal to rule the Rock as King Joffrey Lannister.
• King Cerion Lannister, extended his rule as far east as the Golden Tooth.
• King Tommen I Lannister, built a great fleet and brought Fair Isle into the realm.
• King Loreon II Lannister, held the first tourney ever seen in the westerlands.
• King Tywell II Lannister, who was identified by some as being the king in the tale of the Rat Cook.
• King Lancel I Lannister, the Lion, rode to war against the Gardener kings and conquered the Reach as far south as Old Oak.
  • King Loreon III Lannister, son of King Lancel I, lost all his father gained and earned the mocking name Loreon the Limp.
• King Gerold Lannister, the Great, sailed to the Iron Islands and returned with a hundred hostages.
• King Lancel IV Lannister, is said to have beheaded the ironborn king Harrald Halfdrowned and his heir with the House's Valyrian steel sword Brightroar in one swing. Invaded the Reach during the reign of Gyles III Gardener. He was killed by Ser Wilbert Osgrey at Red Lake.
• King Norwin Lannister, who was not known for his openhandedness.
• King Loreon IV Lannister, the Lackwit, one of Casterly Rock's many weak, cruel and feeble kings.
• King Loreon V Lannister, known as Queen Lorea, for he was fond of dressing in his wife's clothing walking the docks of Lannisport in the guise of a common whore. One of Casterly Rock's many weak, cruel and feeble kings.
• King Tyrion II Lannister, the Tormentor, a strong king, famed for his prowess with a battle-ax, his true delight was torture.

      • Ser Tion Lannister, Gerold's second son, and Tywald's twin. Killed at Battle of Wendwater Bridge during the Fourth Blackfyre Rebellion.
      • Lord Tytos Lannister, known as the Toothless Lion, Lord Gerold's third son and successor. Lord of Casterly Rock. Succeeded by Lord Tywin.
      • Jason Lannister, Gerold's fourth son. Father of Damon, Stafford and Joanna Lannister, two others sons and two other daughters, and a bastard daughter, Lynora Hill.

Trivia

• They are loosely based off of Houses Lancaster and York from the real life War of the Roses, but as something of a reversal; typically House York was considered the "bad guys" by most historians, while the Lancasters (whose name most resembles the Lannister name), were seen as the "good guys" by most historians.
• Members of the Lannisters are usually seen baring the colors Red and Gold. This is because the colors symbolize the main interests of the Lannisters. Red represents their wanting to be seen as royalty and thus powerful, while Gold represents their greed and riches.
• Ironically, their sigil greatly resembles that of House Gryffindor from Harry Potter, despite being in many ways the opposite of Gryffindor (villainous instead of heroic, dishonorable and treacherous instead of loyal and courageous, etc.)
• In the TV series, it is stated that the Lannister mines in the westerlands have gone dry. In the books, the gold mines are still active.
