House Montague are a family of nobles in Neo Verona and the main antagonists of Romeo x Juliet. They seized power in Neo Verona after their leader Leontes van de Montague murdered the former ruling family of the Capulets and claimed the title of Prince.
History[]
Though he was originally not of the Montague House, Leontes managed to get himself adopted into the family somehow and poisoned the House's heir so he could become Head. As the leader of House Montague, Leontes staged a coup against the ruling family of Neo Verona, the Capulets, allowing the House of Montague to take power. However, horrified by what he had done, Leontes' wife Portia left him and the family, leaving Leontes and their son Romeo as the only apparent members of it.
The Montagues soon solidified their power in Neo Verona, framing the Capulets as cruel tyrants. After fourteen years of ruling, most memories of the Capulets had faded from the public mind. Despite this, Leontes had knowledge that a member of the Capulet family had escaped his massacre, the two year old Juliet, and thus for those fourteen years Leontes ordered the Carabinieri to search for her. Eventually, Juliet did resurface to lead a rebellion against the Lord Montague's tyrannical rule and, to his shock, his own son Romeo sided with her, having fallen in love with her, resulting in Leontes banishing Romeo from the family. Instead, Leontes adopted Mercutio Marchege to be his heir.
With the support of most of the civilian population of Neo Verona, Juliet and Romeo were able to spearhead an uprising against Leontes and stormed his castle. After Leontes was killed, Romeo abdicated the throne to Juliet and the Capulet House.
