Howard Watcher is a minor antagonist in the Sonic X anime and its comic book adaptation. He was the warden of Prison Island, where Sonic the Hedgehog was locked up, and had a perfect record until the hedgehog escaped and the island was subsequently destroyed by Dr. Eggman. This caused him to develop a grudge against Sonic, joining a group determined to destroy him.
He was voiced by Toshihiko Nakajima in Japanese and by Jonathan Ross in English.
Biography[]
Anime[]
Howard Watcher watched over the Prison Island while Sonic was incarcerated there. When his friends broke in to rescue him, he sent security after them, and when Rouge broke in to steal the Chaos Emeralds kept in the vault, he sent a Flying Dog mech to defeat her. Ultimately, everyone involved escaped the Prison Island, which was set to explode by Dr. Eggman. Watcher also escaped before the island blew up, but due to Sonic ruining his perfect record with his escape, his career was considered ruined.
Comic Book[]
In the comic book sequel, Watcher joined the Society for Observing and Neutralizing Interdimensional Creatures and Xenomorphs in order to get revenge on Sonic, his friends and Dr. Eggman. The organization's headquarters were ironically located in the ruins of Howard's prison, making it "home turf" for him. When Sonic was first captured by Hector Dragg, Howard told him about the grudge he held against him and the reason behind it. When Sonic tried to escape, he sent his security drones after the hedgehog, but he escaped by hijacking one of them. Since then, Howard only made minor appearances.
Personality[]
Howard is obsessed with his perfect record of having zero breakouts on his watch, to the point of wanting revenge against the first person to escape him. He takes great pride in his prison's defense systems, and is ready to boast about them even when nobody is around to listen to him. The 4Kids dub portrays him as even more ruthless, refusing to take prisoners whenever someone breaks in and preferring to have them killed, claiming he has enough prisoners to begin with.
