Hua Xiong was a minor antagonist in the 14th-century Chinese classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms by the late Luo Guanzhong, and its multiple adaptations, being a major antagonist during the Coalition Against Dong Zhuo. Counted among Dong Zhuo's elite, he was considered the most powerful warrior in his service beneath only Lu Bu. A brutal man, he slaughtered countless foes in combat gaining great fame and notoriety in the process. At the battle of Sishui Gate, Hua Xiong became an impassable obstacle to the Coalition, with one victorious duel after another, felling many of the Coalition's toughest fighters. However, he was then swiftly defeated in a duel by Guan Yu, who famously took his head and returned to his own base before his ceremonial wine even cooled.
Biography[]
Historically not much is known about Hua Xiong's early life, only that at some point he entered the service of Dong Zhuo before the man's rise to absolute tyranny. Unlike in the novel, Hua Xiong was slain in Yangren by Sun Jian.
He was given a much greater role in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Here Hua Xiong is one of the most powerful warriors of the age, and has great infamy due to his barbaric power. He, along with Lu Bu would bring Dong Zhuo victory after victory in his campaign to attain complete control over China.
He would almost singlehandedly deliver multiple defeats to the Coalition forces during their campaign to bring an end to Dong Zhuo, especially at the battle of Sishui Gate where Hua Xiong stood undefeated, slaying multiple enemies in duels over the course of the battle. He routinely gloated about his power and constantly harassed the allies hiding in their base, who were unable to send a single person out to best him.
This was when Guan Yu, who along with his sworn brothers, Liu Bei and Zhang Fei were not yet known to anyone, emerged to challenge Hua Xiong himself. Guan Yu famously defeated him in no time at all. After presenting his head to the Coalition leaders, Yuan Shao promptly Liu Bei and his brothers the newest official addition to their forces.
