Hugh Chard is a supporting antagonist in "Neverland", the Season 2 finale of Endeavour. He was a corrupt cop affiliated to ACC Clive Deare and a Detective Inspector in Oxford City Police. He had been hostile to Constable Endeavour Morse and was willing to carry on Deare's order to kill him.
He was portrayed by Vince Leigh.
Biography[]
Clive Deare was a minion of ACC Clive Deare and a part of Oxford's corruption ring within the police, taking share from the grafting money and bribery of Rupert Standish, Josiah Landesman and Gerald Wintergreen. He was also an arrogant person who was looking down at Morse for being a novice.
Later, after the death of George Aldrige, Chard was presented in the golf field alongside Standish, Landesman, and Wintergreen when Morse asked Landesman about the past of Blenheim Vale, to which Landesman evaded.
After Wintergreen's death, Morse discovered that Wintergreen was a child rapist along with Landsman, but neither Mrs. Wintergreen nor Reginald Bright would buy it, with Mrs. Wintergreen accusing Morse to speak ill of her husband, whilst Bright insisted that Deare's investigation on Blenheim Vale would never make a mistake. Whilst Morse and Thursday were discussing the case, they saw Chard laughing and chatting with Jakes, but when Chard discovered Thursday was staring at him, he immediately stopped laughing.
Later that night, after locating about Tommy Cork's whereabouts, Morse contacted Deare who allowed Morse to meet him somewhere in front of a warehouse. However, at the place, Morse discovered that Deare was responsible for making Peter William's death be reported as a suicide, and he had never arrived. Instead, Deare sent Chard and another police officer to assassinate Morse.
Nevertheless, Morse managed to escape and ran Chard over with his car before escaping. Unable to catch up with Morse, Chard reported to Deare about Morse being escaped. Later, after Morse's name was cleared, it was implied that Chard was arrested for his part in Deare's murder of Standish and attempted murder of Morse & Thursday.
Trivia[]
- Before his proper appearance in "Neverland", Chard was mentioned only in its previous episode, "Sway".
