~ De Vries to Morse.
I'm going to kill you. Or am I?
~ De Vries as he pointed his gun at Morse.

Hugo De Vries is the main antagonist in "Masonic Mysteries", the fourth episode in Series 4 of Inspector Morse.

He was an associate with the Masons, who used manipulation, murder and theft in order to frame his old adversary, Inspector Morse, and tried to both topple and torment Morse via his machination. He is notable for being the only antagonist who nearly defeated Morse during the latter's DCI career, and is also considered to be Morse's archenemy in spite of his single appearance in the franchise.

He was portrayed by Ian McDiarmid, who is best known for portraying Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars film series.

Trivia

  • Despite being a one-shot antagonist who only appeared in the television series, De Vries is the most dangerous adversary Morse had ever faced, as well as his archenemy. He is often considered to be Inspector Morse franchise's equaivlance of Professor James Moriarty in terms of his role.
  • De Vries is notable for being the only antagonist who nearly defeated Morse during the latter's prime, but is not chronologically the first. The first villain who defeated the Morse was Clive Deare, when Morse was still a young constable at the time.
  • It remained uncertain whether he will make an appearance in Endeavour.
