Humpty Dumpty (Beware the Batman)

Humphrey Dumpler, nicknamed Humpty Dumpty, is an antagonist in the 2013 animated series Beware the Batman.

Dumpler was a genius accountant who was forced to work for Gotham crime boss, Tobias Whale. Looking to put Whale away, Lt. Gordon convinced Dumpler to testify against his boss, which led to a murder attempt on Humphrey's life. Angered, Dumpler sought to kill anyone in a path of revenge.

Humpty Dumpty is voiced by Matt Jones in his first villain role.

Past[]

Humphrey's life is mostly unknown before moving to Gotham. However, Batman's computer revealed he lived in Star City with his grandma before she disappeared under mysterious circumstances.

Since moving to Gotham, Dumpler was employed by Whale to help balance his books. He agreed to testify against Whale in exchange for protection. However, someone allied to Whale fired a missile at Dumpler with the intent of killing him. Humphrey survived, which caused him to snap, and disappear off the map.

Quest for Vengeance[]

Years later, Dumpler captured several people allied to Whale and Gordon, trapping them inside of giant toy soldiers that would explode if tampered with. Batman would discover Dumpler's role in this after he kidnapped Whale. Realizing Gordon was next, Batman would attempt to protect him. This was all for naught as Dumpler sent several blank soldiers to fight him. This distracted Batman long enough for Humpty Dumpty to kidnap Gordon.

While trying to track Dumpler, Batman found his lair and was able to modify his batarangs to disable the wiring of the exploding soldiers. Realizing Dumpler was now at the castle on the other side of town, Batman would free Gordon and Tobias infuriating Dumpler. Batman would chase Dumpler through the castle, where Dumpler would say it wasn't his fault, blaming Gordon and Tobias for dragging him into their war. While Batman was symphatetic to him, he did bring up that it didn't justify Dumpler's actions. Batman would find Dumpler at the top of a tower, apparently ready to jump, only to realize it was another soldier in disguise. Gordon would then recive a call, saying that Dumpler had disabled the bombs. Batman would bring up that Humphrey was evil, but honorable, knowing this wasn't the last they heard of him.

He returns in the episode "Games" where he kidnaps Batman, Katana, Tobias Whale, Commissioner Gordon, and Mayor Grange. They all wake up in a room with a corpse in it. Each of them has a clue and Humpty tells them that one of them is responsible for the murder and they have to solve it if they want to live. Each time they solve part of it they move onto a different room each one has a complex trap which is based off a game such a giant eggshell, falling floor tiles, flying book, and spikes. The group also slowly turns against each other.

After they get far Humpty traps them and brings out unconscious Ernie Crosky a man who mistakenly smuggled weapons for Tobias Whale, with a disguised Katana, stopped by Batman, arrested by Gordon, and sent to prison by Grange. Crosky turned out to be innocent the whole time and was taken away from his family. Humpty tells the group that they all ruined Crosky's life just like how they ruined his own. He tries to get Crosky to kill them but he refuses so Humpty tries to do it himself. However, Batman knocks him onto one of his own traps which knock him out. Humpty is then taken to Blackgate Prison along with Whale and Crosky is able to return to his family. While Batman was successful in capturing Humpty Dumpty, the events traumatized Mayor Grange into dropping out of the next election, boosting Harvey Dent's chances of winning.

Trivia[]

It was mentioned by the Batcomputer that Humphrey's grandma disappeared under mysterious circumstances. In the comics, Humphrey was regularly abused by her. Deeming her broken, Humpty Dumpty killed her and attempted to bring her back to like in a similar notion to the Frankenstein's Monster.
Humpty Dumpty's "MO" is similar to Superman villain Toyman.
