Hun is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Karai) of the 2003 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series. He is the leader of the Purple Dragons, the arch-nemesis of Casey Jones and the right-hand of the Utrom Shredder, before sharing the role with Karai following her introduction in Season 2. He also appears in the Mirage comics and in IDW Comics in the latter as Arnold Jones' Casey's father.
He was primarily voiced by Greg Carey and by David Zen Mansley for the fifth and sixth season.
Personality[]
Hun is above all a ruthless and heartless individual. He is extremely cruel, nihilistic, and vile. He has a deep hatred for what he calls "monsters", (i.e. turtles), and he openly hates Karai for being Shredder’s favored second in command whom he has repeatedly attempted to kill. He is not afraid to cause pain; Hun is directly responsible for many of Baxter Stockman's "punishments" as he slowly transforms into a cyborg. Implying that Hun enjoys this torture, although the exact reason is unclear (hate for Stockman, desire to please his master, simple sadism, or a combination of the above) . Hun also seems to believe in authoritarian ways of working; he tends to lash out when his gang members when they disobey or ignore him, but in turn he obeys his superiors without question. He is very loyal to his master, Shredder, and reacts with deep sadness when he lets him down or fails him.
In the unproduced episode, Nightmares Recycled, a far more darker take of Hun established him thoroughly at a young age. As a potential sadist, and possibly homicidal, going so far to get a crooked surgeon to remove his conjuring brother he had from birth to adolescence and when the operation was finished, gave his brother to the surgeon and covered him in a blanket.
In addition, most of Hun's personality is like that of a "Big Man", as opposed to the "muscle". Hun is a large man, with a boxy appearance and a small head to accentuate his muscles. He surpasses most other characters in the series, and because of this, he is easily recognizable in any scene. He hits hard, takes hits, and is sometimes called big (especially by Raphael). Heavy weapons such as rocket launchers are usually in his hands, he often uses strength-based grappling methods (like bear hugs) and he frequently performs heavy lifting, for whether it's strength or physicality (moving rubble, shoveling coal, etc.). or metaphorically (acting as a battlefield commander, carrying out Shredder's plans, etc.). Finally, he is the strongman of a street gang (later a criminal organization), who tends to lead from the front, cause massive explosions, and survive falls from great heights that would kill a normal person.
Subsequent episodes have highlighted his personality. He is someone who likes to destroy, modified vehicles, and the like. Despite his emphasis on strength, he is surprisingly cunning and versatile, using a combination of ninjitsu and street fighting to challenge the Ninja Turtles in the early episodes. He is also something of a "hardcore gamer" (or at least in the future), being more malicious than outright destructive.
History[]
Hun was born to a possibly lower middle class family with a twin brother, but from birth the two were conjuring twins, and lived with each other with their parents. Given his sinister nature in later years, he despised his twin and the fact that they were attached to each other. That was until around the time the two were teens, Hun no longer wanting to live with his brother, called an alley surgeon, who separated the two, and let him keep the twin, while Hun began a criminal empire of his own.
Hun started his criminal career in his teen years and became the leader of Purple Dragons. He and a group of Purple Dragons burned down the store of Arnold Jones (Casey's father) after he refused to pay the Purple Dragons protection money. Hun told Casey to tell his father to pay up next time or else. However, Arnold went to the police which made Hun kill him. Sometime later, the Shredder found him and took him as a protege after he realized his potential. In the beginning of the 2003 series, he left his operations to Johnny and Dragon Face while he serves the Shredder. In "Attack of the Mousers", he was sent by the Shredder to bring Dr. Baxter Stockman to the Foot HQ and gave him his punishment by drilling out his left eye. He delivered the Sword of Tengu to Saki in "Darkness on the Edge of Town" and punished two Foot technicians for losing it to the TMNT. Hun was later ordered by the Shredder to team up with Stockman to find info on the Turtles in
Hun interrogating Raphael.
“The Way of Invisibility". Hun let Raph escape so the Foot Tech ninjas follow him to the other Turtles. The TMNT defeated the ninjas and Baxter Stockman blamed Hun for the failure of the mission. However, Stockman was taken away by two Foot Tech Ninjas. Hun reported to Oroku Saki that based on his interrogation, the Turtles don't know anything about Saki's enemies. Oroku Saki decides that the Turtles may be useful to him when the time is right.
First Battle with the Turtles[]
In "Fallen Angel", he hosts the Purple Dragons cage match. He knocked out Casey Jones and took him hostage, intending to let the winner of the cage match be the one who gets to kill him for all the trouble he caused for the Dragons. Later he fought the Turtles. In their first fight against him, he actually overpowered them, they were only saved by Casey Jones. Casey later defeats Hun and battle and almost kills him for what he did to his father before Angel stops him. When asked why, Angel states that killing Hun would be a big mistake as it would make Casey no better than him.
He later returns in the first part of "The Shredder Strikes." Here, he fights the Turtles all at once and does considerably well despite being out numbered. He loses after Leo, out of anger after seeing Hun about to kill Raph, kicks him off the roof they were fighting on. Hun is alive, but is out of commission during the second part.
Shredder's Return[]
In the two-part episodes of "The Shredder Strikes Back", Hun encountered Leo, who was doing a morning training, but Leo defeated him. Hun regained his consciousness and tried to take down Leo but was knocked out. Hun gleefully sees the Foot Elites deal with Leo as he walked back to see Leo being defeated. Hun and the rest of the Foot bow toward the Shredder's arrival, much to Leo's shocked at his survival. After Leo is being injured and tossed towards April's home, Hun and the Foot enter the building to deal with the rest of the Turtles, Splinter, and April with Hun's intent of killing Leo in his injured state. However, Casey arrived in time to help deal with the Foot and stopping Hun. However, the Foot prove too much for the Turtles to deal with that they have to retreat back of April's home. Hun and the Foot retreat after the police arrives with the Shredder's plan to blow up a building with the Turtles and their ally inside.
In the "Tale of Leo", Hun gives report on their Foot's empire expanding, but Oroku Saki is not yet comfortable on the situation because Saki believes that the Turtles might be still alive. Baxter Stockman offers his service to provide proof of the Turtles are killed in the explosion in exchange for the artifact for him to study. Oroku Saki agree to the condition, but if Stockman failed, his punishment will be his final with Hun being prepared for that.
Turtle's Return[]
While Hun was busy doing some work with the Foot, he noticed the Turtles, who survived and was in hiding at Casey Jones’ farm house, inflating their headquarter. Hun tried to warn his boss about the situation, including the fact that Stockman lied about the report.
Mirage Comics[]
Hun appeared in a Mirage issue special where he fought Casey as the leader of the Purple Dragons and the murderer of his father.
IDW Comics[]
Hun appears in the IDW version where he was the founder and leader of the Purple Dragons, but with his original identity of being Casey's father, Arnold Jones. He fell in love with Casey's mother, who sadly died from labor and later became a villain again. He also drank alcohol and abused Casey in fits of rage.
