The Hungan

The Hungan

The Hungan was the village witch doctor beloved by the people until Storm began to manifest her mutant weather abilities causing the villagers to turn against the Hungan as a fraud. The Hungan had a statue that was eventually knocked down and replaced by a statue of Storm seeing this caused the Hungan to be consumed by jealousy and hatred for this “goddess” and vowed revenge. Storm eventually left the village and moved to the United States where she eventually joined Charles Xavier and became the first member of the Xavier Institute and by extension the X-Men. However the village did not know of Storm’s whereabouts until 10 years later when the Hungan declared that he had found Storm’s whereabouts and vowed to capture her power and conquer all of Africa. By that time the Hungan had managed to win back the village and gained many followers from the villagers. Only one member of the village Nirambo was against the Hungan as he had been a close friend to Storm when she had still lived in the village. Using his as well as the villagers voodoo sorcery he emotionally manipulated Storm making her appear insane depressed and emotionally vulnerable and because he had created a fog so powerful that it blocked their presence no one in the X-Men could see or hear them not even Storm. It wasn’t until Storm’s nephew Spyke had run away from the Xavier Institute that Nirambo tried to warn Storm of the Hungan’s plans. Because Storm was too worried for her nephew who had run away she couldn’t or wouldn’t hear her old friend’s warning. By that time it was too late the Hungan’s followers had come out of hiding and captured Storm putting her in a confined crate which due to her claustrophobia she was unable to break out of. The Hungan finally got his revenge and using his staff absorbed her powers mockingly asking where her power was now and degrading her as a goddess the Hungan slammed the crate shut. Meanwhile Nirambo was cornered by Wolverine who was searching after Spyke had told Xavier what happened to Storm and Nirambo merely replied that he had tried to save Storm as Wolverine asked from what. Xavier and the rest of the X-Men appeared and said that Nirambo had the answers they were looking for. Nirambo told them how the Hungan had captured Storm’s spirt in his staff and was keeping he locked in a crate aboard a boat as revenge for turning the village against him ten years ago. At that moment the Hungan’s followers attacked the X-Men while they wondered at first if they were ghosts they realized their weapons were real enough and so were they. Spyke having neglected his training with Storm a few days before finally remembered Storm’s words that she’s in his hands and upon hearing the Hungan’s voodoo chant declared that the Hungan was toast finally focused enough to shatter the Hungan’s staff returning Storm’s powers to her. As the Hungan tried to flee Storm having broken free and enraged at what the Hungan did to her told that if he wanted her powers she would give him more than he could handle creating a powerful cyclone the Hungan tried to hold on to the boat but was quickly sucked in screaming not long after Nirambo as well as the Hungan’s followers had disappeared with Xavier claiming it was as if they had all vanished in the fog. The Hungan made his only appearance in episode African Storm.
