~ Jang-soo to Jun-ho.
Seok-bong, I'm sorry. Seok-bong! Damn... It's my fault! No... I've sinned to die! It's my fault! My... I... I... I... It's my fault! I'm not saying let's just skip it! Please save me! I'll turn myself in! I'll pay for the crime! God damn it! God damn it! Please save me!
~ Jang-soo's cowardly nature in front on Jo Seok-bong.

Hwang Jang-Soo (In Korean: 황장수, Hwang Jang-Soo) is the main antagonist of the anti-Conscription Korean Netflix Drama, D.P Season 1. He is a sergeant in the 103rd Infantry Division's military police force, and as the leader of the special task force of the 103rd Infantry Division, he is a corrupt soldier and sadistic bully who enjoys harassing his successors as his hobby and main job is to abuse his many successors even when his discharge is nearing.

He was portrayed by Shin SeungHo.

Personality[]

Jang-Soo is a sadistic and violent person who likes to abuse and torture his successors. In addition, he inflicted serious abuse on Jo Seok-bong in order to satisfy pure sadism, which provided an opportunity for Jo Seok-bong to become a cold blood misanthrope.

Also, he insulted Ahn Jun-ho's mother by saying he was a beggar, but even in the Korean army, he doesn't insult his parents, because he knows that the people who wait more than anyone for a soldier who goes to the army are his family, especially his parents. This proves that Sgt. Hwang Jang-soo lacks morality and consideration for others.

However, it shows to some extent that Hwang Jang-Soo is also a victim of the Korean military's conscription system and absurdity. As soon as he became a civilian, he could not say anything in front of the part-time store owner, showing that Hwang Jang-Soo is one of many ordinary Korean men in their 20s who cannot easily resist the unjust society's abuse and do not commit evil deeds in non-military societies, when Jo Seok-bong, who came to seek revenge, asks him why he abused him, he simply says that he thought it would be okay, shows that he is not a naturally evil human being.

In spite of all this, however, Jang-Soo also proved to be very cowardly at heart, as seen when he begs Seok-bong not to kill him, an act that ultimately highlights him as a hypocrite, as he's afraid to pay for the consequences of his actions, especially when they threatened his well-being or even his life, in spite of all of the pain he joyfully and remorselessly inflicted upon others, Jo Seok-bong mainly.

Biography[]

D.P[]

At the same time as he appeared, he showed intimidation to his successor with his tall height and loud voice, took out one of Ahn's mother's letters to Ahn Jun-ho and read it aloud in front of the squad members, insulting him. show deficient behavior. Ahn Jun-ho got angry at this and said to him, "Can't you stop?", but Jang-soo Hwang instead shot Ahn Jun-ho and shouted to open the gun box to desert him, making the atmosphere even worse.

Trivia[]

  • He is quite a sadist who likes to abuse his successors, but D.P.'s story and message crucially prevent him from standing out because the conscription and absurdity of the South Korean military makes a terrible person.
  • Shin SeungHo, the actor who plays him, has not yet enlisted in the army, but Shin SeungHo once attended the Department of Physical Education at Dong-Eui University, and at that time, in the university's physical education department, kinds of absurdity and harshness that were comparable to the military existed, and Shin SeungHo experienced it. And Shin SeungHo's real personality is similar to Jo Seok-bong.
