The Hydro Contaminators are a race of robotic landmine-like aliens from the planet Aquitar and major antagonists in Power Rangers Zeo. They served as background antagonists until the episode "Mean Screen", were indirectly responsible for the creation of the Zeo Blaster and one in particular served as the main antagonist of the episode "Graduation Blues" as well as a cameo antagonist in the episode "A Golden Homecoming."
The Hydro Contaminator that came to Earth was voiced by Dan Woren who also voiced the Drill Master in Zeo and was later the voice of Medicon in Power Rangers Time Force as well as both Onikage and the original voice of Zen-Aku in Power Rangers Wild Force.
Species History[]
After the Hydro Hog's reign of terror ends in early 1996 with his death at the hands of the Shogun Megafalconzord, the Hydro Contaminators rise up to become the newest threat to Aquitar by poisoning the planet's water sources to make the planet more hospitable for them. As a result of the pollution, the Aquitarians begin getting poisoned so they come into conflict with the Aquitarian Rangers with this likely being why they pull off of Earth right after destroying thier archenemy. During the early stages of the war, they are able to destroy Aquitar's main computer which renders both the planet's teleportation and the Battle Borgs useless.
To turn the tide of the war, Cestro the Blue Aquitar Ranger comes to Earth via space-ship to get Billy Cranston's help in designing a weapon to destroy them as their own technology is very unreliable. only for a Hydro Contaminator to follow in order to prevent the Aquitarians from gaining an advantage. He is first seen confronting Billy and Cestro only for the Zeo Rangers to intervene but the Machine Empire send Cogs to aid him since any enemy of the Aquitarians is a friend to them. Despite not recognising them, the Hydro Contaminator accepts their help before heading towards Angel Grove Lake to pollute it only to be taken down by Tommy's Zeo Flying Power Kick. With the Cogs swiftly being destroyed, with one even being thrown into the Lake where its explosion knocks away the monster, the Hydro Contaminator swiftly teleports away due to being surrounded.
The Hydro Contaminator then attacks the Angel Grove Water Treatment Plant to pollute it instead where he receives help from Prince Sprocket and more Cogs when he struggles to locate any water. When the Zeo Rangers arrive and defeat the Cogs, the Hydro Contaminator turns invisible and smacks them all down only for Tommy to shoot it with his Zeo V Power Sword and then stab it in the core hard enough to destroy the Hydro Contaminator's core; rendering him helpless. The Zeo Rangers then shoot him with the Zeo Laser Pistols before Tommy completely blasts him off the building with his Advanced Zeo Laser Pistol. As he recovers, the Zeo Rangers fry the Hydro Contaminator with the Zeo Power Weapons just as Billy finishes the Zeo Blaster which they then use to destroy the monster. Due to his body being completely obliterated in the process, the Hydro Contaminator is not able to be enlarged by Klank and Orbus.
With no reason to stay on Earth, Billy returns with Cestro to Aquitar to make a genuine difference. By reverse engineering the Zeo Blaster technology, Billy and the Aquitarians are able to turn the tide of the war and quickly destroy many Hydro Contaminators. By the time that the Zeo Rangers have destroyed Mean Screen, the Aquitarians and the Hydro Contaminators have signed a peace treaty which leads Billy to return to Earth.
Even later on, Trey of Triforia transfers his Gold Ranger powers to Jason Scott to deny them to King Mondo, the Emperor executes his ultimate plan; recreating an army of past monsters (including the Hydro Contaminator that once came to Earth) and upgrading them with the Neo-Plutonium Armour. The new and improved monsters are much stronger than they were before and are completely immune to the Rangers' weapons with the ultimate mission of destroying the Zeo Megazord. However, the four he sends out are destroyed by the new Super Zeozords and he is forced to scrap the rest of the now useless monsters which include the Hydro Contaminator.
In Space[]
Likely due to their peace treaty with the Aquitarians, none of the Hydro Contaminators are known to have participated in the United Alliance of Evil's invasion of the universe. As a result, they are likely to have spared by Zordon's Energy Wave and still continue to exist peacefully on Aquitar.
Personality[]
The Hydro Contaminator species was shown to be ruthless and genocidal in thier mission to conquer Aquitar as well as willing to pollute and convert any planet with water on it to thier own. The one that came to Earth in particular was joyful at the idea of finding out if he could pollute all water in the human body and was willing to work with the Machine Empire (which he had never heard of) to achieve this goal. However, he was shown to be obsessive and single-minded as he only wanted to pollute which proved to be his undoing. The Hydro Contaminators as a whole seem to have some form of common sense though; suing for peace when the war turned against them.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Strength: The Hydro Contaminator that came to Earth took down each of the Rangers with single swings after turning invisible.
- Durability: The Hydro Contaminator that came to Earth was able to shrug off Tommy's Zeo Flying Power Kick, being close to an exploding Cog, multiple laser blasts from Tommy's Zeo V Power Sword, being shot by both the Zeo Laser Pistols and Tommy's Advanced Zeo Laser Pistol, being knocked off a building and fried by all of the Zeo Power Weapons without a scratch.
- Sight: The Hydro Contaminators can see despite not having eyes.
- Speech: The Hydro Contaminators can speak despite lacking a mouth.
- Explosive Teleportation: The Hydro Contaminators can teleport to any location at will by spraying blue energy and then having a miniature explosion erupt from their fronts.
- Water Pollution: The Hydro Contaminators can infect bodies of water at least as big as Angel Grove Lake just by walking into them.
- Energy Flashes: The Hydro Contaminators can release a blue energy spray from its power core which was able to vaporise part of a wall.
- Invisibility: The Hydro Contaminators can turn completely invisible and be undetectable by flashing the golden orbs in their centres. As revealed by dialogue, when stressed, they would continuously and involuntary fade in and out of visibility.
- Energy Sparks: The Hydro Contaminators can also release blue energy sparks when turning invisible to force back the enemy.
- Super Speed: Whilst invisible, the Hydro Contaminators can move at incredibly fast speeds where they are only visible as red energy lasers.
Weaknesses[]
- Weight: Due to being quite heavy, the Hydro Contaminator was slow to enter Angel Grove Lake which led to Tommy being able to knock him down.
- Energy Core: The Hydro Contaminators' power sources are the golden orbs in the center of their body. If they are damaged, like when Tommy's Zeo V Power Sword shot one, the Hydro Contaminators become completely helpless.
Arsenal[]
- Mace Hand: The Hydro Contaminators have a ball-like mace instead of a left hand that they can use to bash thier enemies with.
- Right Pincer Arm: In place of a right arm, the Hydro Contaminators have pincer claws to smack and grapple thier enemies with.
Trivia[]
- In Ohranger, the Hydro Contaminators were a single monster instead of a species and served the Machine Empire instead of just one member working with them.
- This was changed to give Billy a reason to go to Aquitar and thus leave the show for a few episodes because David Yost was being abused behind the scenes for being a homosexual.
