Hym is a chess-themed villain in the Dragon Quest spin-off manga and anime Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. He is the Pawn Warrior of Hadlar's personal guard. Created by animating a chess piece to battle the Disciples of the Great Hero Avan, he developps a rivalry with Hyunckel, but after his liege's death, he inherits his life and spirit and redeems himself.

In the 2020 anime, he was voiced by Shinichiro Miki in Japanese and Griffin Cork in English.

Appearance[]

Hym is a human-shaped, silvery, metallic construct, looking like a tall, bald, lean and muscular, yet rather featureless man, fitting his Pawn theme.

When reborn as the Silver-Haired Beast, he grows a long, wild mane of hair of the aforementioned color, similar to that of Hadlar, indicating both his Promotion to King and him bearing his late liege's spirit and will.

Personality[]

Hym is cruel, uncaring, and violent. He is always eager for a battle with enemies he deems worthy and furiously loyal to Hadlar, just like other Elite Guards. To such a point that he would attack anyone who insulted him, as a Barbatos learned the hard way. His honourable conduct and sense of companionship is a reflection of Hadlar's newfound mentality when he created him.

He fights fairy and honorably, but ruthlessly. He appears laid-back but he is in fact very hot-headed, haughty and prideful, not even considering other opponents than the heroes as a challenge, no matter how powerful they are. He is extremely revengeful, stubborn and single-minded, developing an obsession with beating Hyunckel.

After being reborn as the Silver-Haired Beast however, he learns to shed his obsession and treasure the life he was given by his late comrades' spirit, genuinely befriending Hyunckel. He is disgusted to see the other animated chess pieces, rigthfully deeming them worthless, soulless automatons who lack everything that made his team great, despite them sharing their powers.

He first fights against Vearn out of revenge, but he befriends the heroes. Despite being exasperated by the fat rat monster Chiu's ridiculous antics, he grows to respect his leadership skills and willingly becomes a part of his Beast Battalion.

Powers and Abilities[]

Hym is made of Orichalcos, a divine, nearly indestructible metal, making him immune to anything but the very best weapons, attacks and spells. Not only that, but even attacks able to shatter Orichalcos do not harm him unless they strike his Core at heart-level. Moreover, he can concentrate his power in his body to withstand even attacks able to harm him. He can cast basic spells to teleport and fly, and can appear under the shape of the chess piece he was born from, only human-sized.

Aura Knuckle

Hym's mightiest attack.

Hym is immensely strong, fast and spry, being a master in close-range, hand-to-hand fighting. He masters Fire spells, and can infuse them in his fist to cast his deadliest attack: the fiery fist Heat Knuckle.

After gaining Hadlar's organic life and mastery of Aura (energy stemming from life-force), he becomes considerably mightier, stronger, faster, and uses Light Aura, fuelling a new, even deadlier variation of his finishing move: Aura Knuckle, a devastating punch blasting his target with Light Aura.

Biography[]

Hym, just like the other Elite Royal Guard members, was created by Hadlar using a forbidden spell on five Orichalcos chest pieces, with him being born from a pawn. Hym first appeared when Hadlar ordered him to catch and lock Zaboera up to prevent him from killing Dai. Despite of Zaboera casting powerful spells to kill Hym, it is still in vain, as Hym successfully caught Zaboera, much to the heroes' horror.

Shinei Kidan Before Vearn

Hym among the Elite Royal Guard.

Soon, Hadlar sent the Elite Guard to attack the Kingdom of Sababa. Hym battled the Hero of the North, Nova. While Nova was able to knock Hym into large pieces of rock, he came out unscratched.

Nova tried to attack Hym again, only for the Queen Warrior Albinass to use her Thousand Needle Technique to demobilize Nova, much to Hym's displeasure. When Hym was going to kill Nova, Hyunckel appeared and stabbed Hym in the forehead, thus saving Nova.

The Elite Guard then battled the heroes again, and with the combined efforts of the hero Dai and Hyunckel, they successfully broke Hym's arm. The Elite Guard were ordered to retreat by Hadlar after getting ambushed by the mage Popp's ultimate spell "Medoroa" which could destroy them, only owing their survival when the Rook Warrior Block collapsed on them to bury them all underground out of reach.

They later battled the heroes again at the Field of Death, headquarters to the Dark Army, but this battle would be stopped with the explosion of the Black Core Vearn secretely implanted in Hadlar's body (a magic-powered bomb as powerful as a modern nuke). After the explosion, the Elite Guard freed themselves from the debris, they sensed that Hadlar was in danger as he was battling Vearn, having rebelled outraged by the Dark King's callous disregard of them. However, Hym, Block, Albinass and the Knight Warrior Sigma were demobilized by Mystvearn and Killvearn. Eventually, Block sacrificed himself to save Hadlar with his special ability.

Soon, since Hadlar wanted to fight Dai in a one-on-one duel, he ordered the remaining Elite Guard to delay the remaining heroes. Hym fought Hyunckel, but was quickly impaled by his ultimate "Bloody Scryed" technique and was sent plummet off from the flying Vearn's Palace, seemingly killing him.

However, Hym was revealed to have survived the fall, and had sensed the death of his comrades and master. Thus, he wished to not die and managed to survive, returning to the Vearn's Palace when Hyunckel was surrounded by a bunch of monsters. After Barbatos insulted Hadlar, Hym angrily defeated all of them, and silvery hair grew out of his head. (This being due to the Pawn's promotion in Chess and Hym inheriting a redeemed Hadlar's soul and will.)

He fought Hyunckel again, however, after Hyunckel lost his armor, Hyunckel became more agile and defeated Hym by punching him in the stomach. However, Hyunckel refused to go down, having learned to appreciate life, and he got up, concentrating all his aura into his own fist to surpass Hym's mightiest move. By suppressing his aura until the last moment to maximize his attack he defeated Hym for good and earned his respect, but at the cost of pushing his body past its breaking point.

Hym2

Hym as the Silver-Haired Beast from the video-game.

After defeating Hym, the King Warrior Maximum appeared to finish Hyunckel off, but he soon found out that Hyunckel would never abandon his comrades, and being outmatched ordered his puppets to kill Hym. However, after Hyunckel saved Hym, Maximum was ready to kill Hyunckel, only to be killed by a resurrected Larhalt.

Hym finally joined the heroes in defeating Vearn, marking as his redemption. There, his Light Aura proved essential in defeating Mystvearn, and his contribution was vital to help Popp figure out the weakness of Vearn's ultimate "Demonic Guard of Heaven and Earth" ultimate technique.

After Vearn's demise, Hym, Chiu and Crocodine went to live on Dermline Island with Dai's adoptive grandfather, the lump shaman Brass.
