Ian Garvey is the main antagonist of season 5 of the television series The Blacklist. He is number 13 on the Blacklist. He was a US Marshall who helped run a drug-trafficking operation for the Nash Syndicate. He is responsible for murdering Tom Keen, Nik Korpal, and other individuals in connection to uncovering the truth behind Raymond Reddington. He is the surrogate father to Jennifer Reddington.

He is portrayed by Jonny Coyne.

Personality[]

Garvey was pragmatic in his pursuit of his goals willing to murder people to get to the truth of Raymond Reddington. He was content in intimidating Tom Keen to gather information from him on Reddington and does not feel any guilt in killing anyone in his way. He does not mind using extreme violence to punish those who go against him such as fatally stabbing Tom when he went against him. He was not fearful of Reddington in spite of the fact that he was a powerful crime lord and was willing to antagonize him to his advantage. He took his position within the Nash Syndicate seriously and would try to ensure that he met their needs.

Despite his cruelty, he was shown to be amicable to complete strangers in public as a US Marshall. He also genuinely cared for his adopted daughter, Jennifer Reddington, as he was willing to commute long distance to her work-site to check in on her to ensure she was doing well. He was also willing to keep her away from his criminal activity by not telling her about his criminal activity to protect her.

Biography[]

He worked in law enforcement and rose to become a US Marshall of a high-rank. In his position, he would assist a criminal syndicate called the Nash Syndicate while maintaining his position as a US Marshall. Garvey also came into contact with Raymond Reddington's daughter, Jennifer Reddington, where he would raise her well and take care of her. When he was not busy at his job or committing crimes, he would check in on her to see how she was doing.

Garvey got information on a suitcase containing the remains of the real Raymond Reddington. He, along with his men, would assemble a team to spy on, kidnap, and murder anyone in connection to the remains. He ended up sending a man to murder, Nik Korpal, a friend of Elizabeth Keen, when the latter was investigating the skeletal remains. In addition to having his men steal the suitcase with the remains to bring to him. As his mission to go after Raymond Reddington's remains continue, he had his men assault and kidnap Tom Keen, Lena, and Pete at a motel when Tom and Lena were looking for Pete who they thought murdered Nik. He informed them that out of three of them only one will survive and that he needs information on Raymond Reddington. Garvey shot and killed Pete and was about to kill Lena until he gave her false hope of leaving the barn unharmed until he shot and killed her as she was leaving. He continued to interrogate Tom on information related to Reddington. When Tom called Reddington to tell him to meet Garvey at a specific location, Garvey continued to keep Tom captive while also disposing of the corpses of Lena and Pete by putting them into a woodchipper to intimidate Tom. As Garvey deduced that Reddington was not going to the location he was going to, Tom escaped and took the suitcase with the skeletal remains.

Garvey and his men managed to follow Tom who was accompanied by Reddington and Dembe to a house. As Garvey and his men looked for Tom, Reddington, and Dembe, they eventually got into a gun fight at the house. Tom burned Garvey and his men vehicles to prevent them chasing after him, Reddington, and Dembe. Despite losing track of them, Garvey and his men managed to ambush Tom as he made it back to his apartment by beating him up and tying him to a chair. As Elizabeth came home to see the intruders and a bounded Tom, Elizabeth punched Garvey when he introduced himself to her. Garvey composed himself and demanded for Tom to give him answers on Reddington to which the latter refused. Garvey fatally stabbed Tom more than once and got the remains of the real Reddington. He informed his men to kill off both Tom and Elizabeth before leaving. Tom and Elizabeth fought back only for Garvey's knife wound causing Tom's death hours later and the beatings from his men causing Elizabeth Keen to go into a 10-months long coma.

Over a year after Tom's death and Elizabeth returning to look for Garvey, Garvey received intel on Elizabeth's activity to which he told them to continue observing her. Elizabeth managed to kill one of his men, Navarro, during a fight as she was looking for Garvey. As Reddington and Elizabeth continued to look into information on Navarro's prosthetic eye, it triggered a signal which led Garvey and his men to Tadashi Ito's house to which Reddington, Elizabeth, Tadashi and his mother all had to leave the house and hide from Garvey for their safety. Garvey and his men left a message behind to taunt Reddington when they told him they knew the truth.

Garvey kept in contact with his colleagues about how to deal with Elizabeth Keen and how to deal with their trafficking operation for the Nash Syndicate by participating in a meeting. Garvey kept in contact with Norman Singleton and given information from the latter on Elizabeth Keen. However, when Garvey found out that Norman is working against him and working for Elizabeth Keen, Ian stabbed Norman to death. As Elizabeth comes to the crime scene, she sees Garvey for the first time since the killing of Tom and her beating and told Harold Cooper that it was him. Garvey talks with the people in public unbeknownst to Keen identifying him.

Aram Mojtabai arrives at the precinct to try and bring in the witness who witnessed Garvey stabbing Norman to death. As Aram tried to get the witness, Garvey threatened him to no avail. Reddington sets up a meeting with Garvey where the two taunt one another. Reddington and Garvey both agreed to leave one another alive since they both need one another. Reddington agreed to help Garvey by allowing his men to abduct the witness and have him transported out of the vicinity so that his words cannot be used against Garvey. Garvey and Reddington continued to stay in communication with one another as Reddington made it clear to Garvey that the moment he gets the duffel bag from him he will kill him. Unknown to Garvey, Aram and Elizabeth Keen followed Garvey to Baltimore where they noticed that he stays in contact with a young woman, who is known to be Jennifer Reddington.

As soon as Garvey is away from Jennifer, Keen tells Jennifer that she is a FBI agent and that her father murdered her husband. Jennifer later confronts Garvey about the information Keen told her to which Garvey scoffs it off.

Reddington aimed to take down Garvey's power in the criminal underworld by targeting the drug lord, Zarak Mosadek, who is a major partner within the Nash Syndicate. Garvey communicates with his higher-ups about the business arrangements. As Reddington is able to save Mosadek's child and secure his loyalty for a brief time, Mosadek turns over vital information on Garvey to Reddington. As Garvey intended to set up a meeting in an attempt to murder Reddington with the assistance of Mosadek, Reddington and Dembe captured Garvey and incapacitate him. At the same time, Reddington allowed Anthony Pagilero to take on Garvey's disguise to shoot and kill Mosadek on camera which led to the media attention and a manhunt for Garvey while also incurring the wrath of the Nash Syndicate and their higher-ups by framing Garvey as the man who murdered their valued-partner.

Garvey wakes up in the passenger seat of a car with Dembe driving and Reddington in the rear passenger seat. As Reddington and Dembe have small talk with Garvey, Garvey attacks Dembe causing a car crash and escaping from the men. Garvey meets with Jennifer bloodied and bruised. He talked to her about the situation, destroyed a tracker on a coat, and tried to get some money in an attempt to try and escape both the law and the Nash Syndicate. Elizabeth Keen confronts Garvey about Tom's murder while Jennifer tried to protect him. Reddington and Dembe also appear to which Jennifer continued to protect Garvey while denouncing Reddington. As Dembe allowed Jennifer to step away from Garvey, Garvey attempted to shoot and kill Reddington which resulted in Dembe and Keen shooting him three times in the chest. As Jennifer is told by Keen to get the emergency paramedics, Keen told Garvey to not die on her until he revealed the truth to her. Keen and Jennifer accompany a dying Garvey to the hospital as Keen tried to get information out of him. Garvey succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
