Iax is a major historical/legendary figure in The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss. While not much is known about him, he is reported to have started the Creation War. It is also possible that he will end up being one of the main antagonists of the series.
Biography[]
Iax[]
Iax is said to have lived thousands of years before the story takes place. He was supposedly one of the most powerful namers at the time, along with Lyra, Selitos, and Aleph. There was a conflict between the Knowers (who were skilled at Naming), and the Shapers (who used naming to remake the world). The Shapers wanted to be free to remake the world, and so they built The Fae.
Bast claims that Iax spoke with the Cthaeh. Supposedly, the Cthaeh convinced Iax to steal the moon. Using the name of the moon, Iax brought the moon partially into the Fae. This caused the lunar cycle in the Mortal world. It was this act which is said to have started the Creation War.
In this war, the Knowers, led by Selitos and Lanre, battled against the Shapers, led by Iax. It is said that more people died in this war than are alive in the present of the story. Eventually, the Knowers won and sealed "The Enemy" behind the Doors of Stone.
Jax[]
Hespe tells a fairy tale about a young boy named Jax. In this story, Jax was very unhappy. He came across a tinker. They had a bet to see if the Tinker had something that could make Jax happy. Since he didn't, the Tinker was forced to give Jax everything in his packs. Jax rudely insulted the Tinker (which is considered bad luck) and set out to find the moon, which he believed would make him happy.
Jax stumbled across a hermit in a cave. The man saw that Iax had a folded house in the tinker's pack. He explained to Jax how to find the name of the moon, and then warned him not to steal the moon, though Jax ignored him. Jax built the house, then, while on top of the house, used the name of the moon to steal part of her.
Trivia[]
- Some believe that Iax is Haliax, as the end of Haliax is Iax. It is unknown how this would be possible if Lanre and Iax were different people. Some believe they were both controlled by a skindancer.
- In the story of Jax, some believe that either the tinker or the hermit represent the Cthaeh, as they ultimately lead to Jax stealing the moon.
