Ice cream, ice cream! Cool and delicious! How about some ice cream?
~ Ice Cream Bus (as the driver), Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre episode 2, section 2 Ice Cream Bus

The Ice Cream Bus is the titular main antagonist of the Junji Ito short story Ice Cream Bus.

History[]

Ice Cream Bus[]

Every now and then, an ice cream van appears in neighbourhoods around Japan, offering frozen goods to anyone who approaches. The driver is friendly, and the ice cream isn't expensive. He even lets children climb aboard and go for a ride around the neighbourhood, eating as much ice cream as they like, before dropping them back home, though adults aren’t allowed to board.

However, children that regularly ride the Ice Cream Bus begin to show strange behaviour, becoming unwilling to eat food other than the ice cream inside the mysterious vehicle. Even stranger, victims seem to gradually turn into ice cream over time, visibly melting in the heat of the day and becoming sticky after being exposed to the open air. This eventually culminates in the victim dying, typically because of them melting, but also because their body becomes incredibly fragile after being completely converted into ice cream, leaving them vulnerable to serious physical damage such as losing their head. Notably, despite the unsettling nature of this transformation, should a victim turn into ice cream in the presence of others affected by the Ice Cream Bus’s powers who have not transformed, the others aren’t averse to ravenously consuming the deceased.

As mysterious as the driver is, he is not the source of these incidents; rather, the Ice Cream Bus itself is the malevolent entity, and conjures an illusion of the driver to make its façade more convincing.

Powers and Abilities[]

Aside from behaving like any other road vehicle, the Ice Cream Bus demonstrates numerous anomalous abilities directly tied to its paranormal nature and sentience. First and foremost, to blend in and not arouse suspicion, the Ice Cream Bus is able to produce its own supply of ice cream, and create an illusion of a driver that is fully capable of conversing with prospective customers. The ice cream the Ice Cream Bus contains demonstrates numerous bizarre qualities when consumed by the children the bus allows to come aboard; it is highly addictive, and frequent consumers begin to lose their appetite for foods other than the ice cream. It also has the power to slowly transmute and transform those who consume it into more ice cream, eventually completely converting them into more of the substance. Should other people affected by the ice cream witness a victim melt or otherwise die, they are seemingly unconcerned by the shocking sight, and will consume the ice cream as if nothing was wrong with it.
