The Ice Cream Truck is the main antagonist of the 2014 found footage horror anthology film V/H/S: Viral.
It's an ambiguously-sentient, homicidal ice cream truck that ropes the film's main protagonist, Kevin, into a city-wide police chase in its plan to lure him inside itself for the purpose of getting him to upload cursed footage on the internet. it is a ghost
Nature[]
Due to the vehicle's enigmatic nature, many of the franchise's fans have chalked it up to being a vehicle possessed/controlled by the V/H/S Entity. This remains unconfirmed, though. And while it is a good explanation for the truck's calculated aggression as well as malice (in addition to the fact that the Entity itself appears on TV screens stacked within it), the possibility of the truck being a completely separate entity remains.
Here's a phrase that sums up its nature pretty quickly (and effectively): "Hell follows with it." This is evident in the film, as it commits a huge conga line of crimes, ranging from being engaged in a police chase to murdering LAPD officers. The amount of chaos it had wreaked upon Los Angeles by the film's end is simply unbelievable.
History[]
V/H/S: Viral[]
The truck's first physical appearance in the film happens not long after Kevin and his girlfriend, Iris, are introduced to the viewers, with Kev catching a good look at the thing on live TV, causing him to activate his camcorder and declare how "awesome" he finds the chase it's engaged in. He does this right in front of her, much to her irritation, subsequently resulting in her attempts to snap him back to reality, questioning him on if he actually thinks he'll get a viral video out of filming it, which he responds to by asking her if she wants to be part of "something bigger."
Nevertheless, the truculent vehicle nears his house, joined by a cacophony of police sirens, urging him to get up and out of there. Upon going outside, he witnesses a chaotic scene, with bikers riding off into the darkness to capture the chase themselves and a taxi car embarking on its own endeavor in the opposite direction. An LAPD officer then tells Kev off, warning him that "it's not safe out here," in addition to noticing the latter filming him. Iris concurrently receives a call, answers it, and falls for its hypnosis. Afterwards, she catatonically walks outside, distracting Kevin, making him miss the truck passing by his neighborhood. Unexpectedly, however, the truck comes back, runs over the officer, and drives away. Kev pans the camcorder to his left, revealing that it had taken Iris through paranormal means. Distressed by the situation, he decides to follow the thing, but not before he looks down on his phone, showing numbers and cursed footage flashing on its screen. Even worse is the fact that he receives a "haunted," never-ending call from his now missing girlfriend.
The next we see of the vehicle shows another victim of its hypnotizing calls, a man with a nosebleed, who's approached by a person trying to film the chase. They tell him that he's going to miss the occasion, only to scurry off in their apparent uncaringness, joining a group of camerapersons at the same spot. The scurrier climbs a railing, looking to get a better view, collectively surprising the other camerapersons. It doesn't take too long for them to fall, though, seeing as that's exactly what happened after the truck passed by, playing a startling tune.
Kev and the previously mentioned bikers emerge from the night, following the thing's trail, with the former somehow acquiring a bike in the time we last saw him. He subsequently informs the latter, who are now agitated by him "following" them, that the vehicle is circling round the same route and that he won't stop following their paths because it's taken his girlfriend. They're interrupted when it abducts one of the bikers, causing them to give chase. The abducted biker is dragged on the asphalt road by the speeding truck's helping hands, resulting in him losing his shoes and, following suit, his feet. Afterwards, the hands drop him, the thing picks up speed, and another biker hits their body, causing the latter to trip and end up getting struck by a cop car. Kev, now beholding a sight not many have witnessed, slowly approaches one of the fallen men's devices and picks it up.
The truck's next appearance begins with a news voice-over commenting on how the LAPD believes there to be a hostage aboard the vehicle, prompting them to enter surveillance mode. Additionally, Kevin is revealed to have continued his pursuit of it. Helicopters giving chase to the automobile then unwittingly shine their lights down on a gang house, alerting the leader and his posse holding a party therein. One of the members accuses another of snitching, believing the beams to be locked on him. From this, a fray ensues where the leader's dog gets stabbed by a utensil, ending in him going berserk and massacring every single attendant—bar one. Both their eyes catch a glimpse of the truck and Kev, much to their disbelief, unveiling the cause of the quarrel to be a superficial one. A gas leak proceeds to kill the gang leader and the sole survivor, with the camera panning to the latter's phone, showing cursed footage no different from what was seen in Kev's. Just a few seconds later, the gas leak escalates, culminating in an explosion visible from an aerial view.
