~ Zane (as the Ice Emperor) and Vex. |
The Ice Emperor is the overarching antagonist of the Ice Chapter of Season 11: Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu of LEGO Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu.
He is the emperor of the Never-Realm who came to power decades ago, turning the realm into a place of devastation and fear. In reality however, he is Zane, the Ice Ninja. After losing his memory decades ago, he'd be manipulated by Vex into becoming a ruthless pawn in his plan in taking "revenge" against the Formlings and taking over the Never-Realm.
He is voiced by Brent Miller.
Biography[]
As a result of taking a blow for his master, Zane was banished to the Never-Realm by Aspheera and was sent sixty years in the realm's past.
Zane fell through a portal in the sky and awoke in the new realm and called out for help but received no reply. While wandering the realm, he attempted to move the mech but because of the damage he received from his landing, nothing occurred and he begrudgingly used the Scroll. This allowed him to succeed but as he moved the mech, a Giant Eagle attempted to attack him until he used the scroll's power to freeze its wing and scared it off. He soon created an ice cave for shelter, where he tried to repair the Titan Mech but realized he needed to perform a full diagnostic to do so. Zane recorded a message for anyone who happened to find the area in the future and told them of his identity, as well as his loved ones.
Zane proceeded to reboot the mech by plugging himself to the mainframe. As he did so, it turns out that Zane was stalked by Vex who had been watching him since he arrived. Seeing Zane occupied, Vex attempted to steal the Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu and use it to destroy Zane but was unable to, as he lacked power. However, Vex overheard the consequences of unplugging the mainframe and removed it from Zane, erasing his memory in the process.
When Zane awoke, he questioned who Vex was and the latter manipulated Zane into thinking he was his loyal advisor, and proclaimed that Zane is the Ice Emperor who was overthrown. Vex handed Zane the Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu and persuaded him to take back what is "rightfully his".
Believing Vex, Zane journeyed to the Castle of Grimfax and overpowered the soldiers before corrupting them into Blizzard Samurai. Vex told the scared Grimfax that Zane is the Ice Emperor and gave him the option of submitting or perishing. The former ruler surrendered, allowing Zane to take his throne. Zane took up a new set of armor and a helmet, as he took his place on the throne. Now christened the Ice Emperor, Zane sent an eternal winter across the land while Vex quickly took his place as his advisor.
Taking over the Never-Realm[]
In the decades that followed, the Ice Emperor began his rule of terror by wiping out the Yetis, leaving only one survivor named Krag. Due to the over usage of the scroll, Zane became corrupted with his voice turning deeper and raspier, and his face becoming covered in ice. At some point, he created the blizzard army and the Ice Dragon Boreal, which became his loyal pet. He also made Vex into his general and Grimfax into squad leader of the samurai.
After the Formlings (Vex's people) refused to submit to him, Vex misled the Ice Emperor into believing they were savages bent on destruction and should be dealt with. As a result, the Ice Emperor sent Boreal to freeze the village, leaving Akita and her brother Kataru (who was taken prisoner) as the only survivors.
Season 11[]
Sending the Blizzard Samurai[]
The Ice Emperor is on his throne, as Vex appears to tell him of "strangers" (the ninja) are coming to them. Vex tells him they might be there for the prisoners or to defy his will. Hearing this, the Ice Emperor states they must be punished but Vex advises him to destroy them instead and he agrees.
He asks for his Ice Samurai to be deployed to handle the strangers and all those who aid them, at Vex's nudging.
Punishing Grimfax[]
Grimfax returned with less samurai than he had taken with him. He reported that he snuffed out the fire of the fishing village but Vex quickly showed him that the fire was still intact, due to Kai regaining his power. At the moment, the Emperor started to freeze Grimfax for his failure but stopped mid-way, as the latter pleaded with him. The Emperor pardoned him for his failure and told him that he would atone.
When Vex complained the village is conspiring against him and that Lloyd was coming, the Emperor silenced him and stated he would unleash Boreal. He later awoke his dragon and set him after the ninja and the fishing village, resulting in the people being frozen but the ninja escaped.
Kidnapping Lloyd[]
While returning to the palace, Boreal defeated Lloyd along the way but Vex ordered the dragon to spare the green ninja and bring him before the Ice Emperor. After Lloyd regained consciousness, he identified the Emperor as Zane and recognized his corrupted form.
The Emperor was confused by Lloyd calling him "Zane" and listened to the latter bringing up their past adventures. Due to his memory being erased, he does not remember Lloyd, the ninja, Wu, P.I.X.A.L, and Ninjago before answering that he's been in the realm for decades. Vex calls the stories lies but Lloyd voices how he is telling the truth and states Zane has been corrupted and tries to steal the Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu, though the Emperor quickly incapacitated him and Vex pleaded to have him killed but the Emperor fervently ordered him to be imprisoned.
While on his throne, he is confronted by the last Formling Akita who wished to avenge her people. A fight breaks out until Lloyd arrives to inform Akita that the Emperor is actually his friend Zane.
The battle continues before the Ice Emperor freezes Akita and does the same to Lloyd, while proclaiming to the half frozen ninja that there is no Zane. However, he hesitates and is unable to finish him and Vex offered to do so. Vex taunted Lloyd for how some savior he was, but as soon he said the word protect it strikes a chord with the Ice Emperor as he repeats his father's words of how he was made to protect those who could not protect themselves and flashbacks from the past come to him, he finally remembers who he is. With that he was once again Zane, he quickly stops Vex from killing Lloyd before ripping off his face mask and knocking Vex away. Zane then destroys the Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu and releases the realm and inhabits of its icy prison. He then tends to Lloyd who is happy he's back while Zane says it because of him. When Vex tries to charge at them with the spear, Zane freezes him in revenge for manipulating him.
Season 15[]
Return of the Ice Emperor[]
When Zane was damaged, he lost consciousness and had his body parts separated. His cloaking system was erratic and his Ice Emperor alter ego returned, but after that, P.I.X.A.L brought him to the Borg Tower and Cyrus Borg repaired him and he is back to Zane.

Trivia[]
- Zane previously had premonition nightmares of the Ice Emperor and Boreal.
- Because Aspheera also sent Zane sixty years into the past when the former banished him, Zane ruled the Never-Realm for around six decades.
- As he orchestrated the genocide of the Yetis, he is the second ninja to be responsible for many deaths.
- The first ninja was Nya who destroyed the Preeminent, which was the Cursed Realm and destroyed all its inhabitants. By extension, Nya also destroyed the Cursed Realm's sister Realm Djinjago (though Nya had no idea about it until later on)
- He is the second Ninja to be a villain for an extended period of time after Lloyd Garmadon.
- Zane is the second student of Master Wu to become evil, the first was Morro (although Zane became evil due to Vex's actions).
- Technically, the other four ninja have been turned evil, with Jay, Nya and Cole being corrupted by the Overlord's Dark Matter in Season 2, and Kai being corrupted by the power of the Staff of Elements in Season 4. But these were only for a short amount of time.
