The Ichabodies are major antagonists in The Oddity Compendium, an analog horror series created by artist Doctor Nowhere.
They are mysterious, headless entities that reside in the Headless Macrocosm, a psuedo-dimension that exists outside of reality. They have a strong desire to connect back with the roots of materiality, doing so by replacing humans in their homeworlds.
Appearance[]
They are extremely tall, lanky, naked, humanoid corpses without heads. They have pale white skin, a generally skeletal appearance, and extremely long limbs (their arms being disproportionate compared to their legs). The digits on the end of their arms are thin and wispy. They have holes in their frail necks through which they breathe, along with a fleshy cavity in their chest that convulses at random intervals in accordance with their hearts.
Each being looks nearly identical to the next. The only difference between them is their physical dimensions, which can vary greatly among corpses.
Behavior[]
The Ichabodies are technically dead, and they remain completely motionless and mindless except for their inconsistent labored convulsions, until a human physically interacts with them. After contact, their behavior changes as they gain awareness and vitality.
In some cases, when touching a human who has entered the Headless Macrocosm, Ichabodies attempt to remove their victim's head and attach it to their own stumped neck. After this, the entity appears on Earth and in true reality. Their goal is to literally become that person by leeching off their very existence. These breathing bodies appear to be in a constant state of yearning to reconnect with the roots of reality after being cursed with non-existence.
History[]
The Headless Macrocosm[]
The Ichabodies reside in the Headless Macrocosm (also known as Mundum Sincapita), a subreality nearly identical to Earth, with the main difference being the standard absence of humans and the presence of only the Ichabodies in their place. However, approximately 2,393 living humans from Parallel Earth also inhabit this reality. Every resident recounts waking up in the Headless Macrocosm after falling asleep under "strange circumstances" in their home realities. No one in their parallel homes remembers the faces or identities of these individuals, supporting the idea that this location is a form of anti-reality: a waste compartment of the universe used for aspects of reality that are useless or harmful to the existential fabric.
There exists the constant threat of non-existence, a dangerous and contagious condition. This disease can affect anyone on Earth at any time (though it is also triggered by interaction with plague-bearing Ichabodies residing in reality), and once it takes hold, the Headless Macrocosm deems you invalid for residence within its endless meadows filled with fellow patients. Occasionally, crude man-made structures form seemingly out of nowhere to correspond with the structures on Parallel Earth. As mentioned before, the Headless Macrocosm functions like a digestive tract of the universe, and these structures may be antibodies attempting to fight off the virus of non-existence.
The humans in the Headless Macrocosm are believed to take shelter in abandoned structures, banding together to search for plant-based food during warmer times, as the climate in this reality is often below freezing. Although this subreality remains detached from the main reality, the following incident occurred that created a temporary tear between the two.
Michael Tedford[]
A man residing in the Headless Macrocosm was walking through a field with a small house at its center. Upon reaching the house, he unintentionally brushed against one of the breathing bodies. The body, previously motionless except for convulsions, sprang to life and decapitated the man. It then proceeded to attach his severed head to the stump of its own neck. The man's name was Michael Tedford, though merely mentioning his name or viewing him in photographs became metaphysically impossible in reality due to his non-existence in the Macrocosm.
After the corpse had placed Michael's head where its own should have been, an event occurred back on Earth in 2061 that resulted in governmental intervention. A family called the authorities to report an "impossibly tall naked figure" in their backyard. The presence of this entity was highly distressing to the family, who remained inside their home until the situation was resolved. A photograph was taken of the entity, which had Tedford's rotting head affixed atop its frail neck. However, the photograph covers his face with a blue box claiming that "the face you are looking for no longer exists." Shortly after, what remained of Tedford's existence was removed from the premises and taken to an upscale anomaly testing site. This corpse was attempting to become Michael Tedford by leeching off his existence, yearning to reconnect with reality after being seized by the disease of non-existence.
