I killed one Starman. I can kill another.
~ Icicle to Steven Sharp on how to deal with Stargirl.
Hello. And goodbye.
~ Icicle to Stargirl during their first battle.
You seem to think that true true power comes from from other people’s perception of you. From recognition or applause but… that’s not true power. No, William true power doesn't need to be seen. I’ve traveled across this country. I’ve hunted down everybody who played a part in Christine's death. Everybody who exposed her to a toxin that led her to get sick. And I did this because I too made a promise, William. To my wife as she lay dying in my bed that I would combat injustice. For our son. For everyone's children.
~ Icicle lecturing William Zarick and his most famous quote.

Jordan Mahkent, also known as Icicle, is the main antagonist of the 2020 CW TV Series, Stargirl.

He is the CEO of The American Dream company and secret founder/leader of the Injustice Society of America to combat the world's injustices and led the organization in destroying the Justice Society of America a decade before the start of the series. He plotted to restore the U.S to glory through Project New America, a plan where half the country would be brainwashed into accepting a new constitution that would fix several societal issues, though millions would die in the process. After being foiled by the new JSA and seemingly killed, he would resurface in the final season in a plot to use Starman's body as a mouthpiece and win the JSA's trust, only to be foiled once more and killed off for good. He is the archenemy of Starman and his successor Stargirl, as well as the entire Justice Society.

He was portrayed by Neil Jackson, who also portrayed Marcus Van Sciver in Blade: The Series, Edmund Slate in Quantum of Solace, and Abraham Van Brunt/Headless Horseman in Sleepy Hollow.

Overview[]

Jordan Mahkent was the son of Norwegian immigrants that fled to the United States to escape centuries long persecution from their home country due to their bloodline's cryokinetic powers. Jordan became motivated to rid the world of injustices and fix the declining U.S, forming The American Dream company to publicly rebuild America one town at a time, starting with the town of Blue Valley, while concurrently creating the Injustice Society to discreetly eliminate any potential obstacles to his true goal: Project New America.

The Injustice Society eventually ran afoul of the Justice Society of America and after countless battles, Jordan led the JSA into a trap in an abandoned mansion on the outskirts of Los Angeles, successfully leading the ISA in destroying their heroic counterparts, with Icicle personally laying the killing blow on his archenemy Starman, ending the Golden Age of Heroes. Shortly afterwards, Jordan's wife died from toxic poisoning due to corporate negligence and he left the country to hunt down all those involved in her death, leaving the ISA in the hands of the Wizard until he returned.

Around a decade later when Brainwave got himself into a coma thanks to Stargirl, Jordan returned from his hiatus and after learning the Wizard's indecisiveness was partly to blame, executed him and his family. He became acquainted with Stargirl's mother, Barbara Whitmore, and accelerated Project New America, acquiring parts for Dragon King to complete his machine and allow an awakened Brainwave to brainwash half the country into seceding and accepting Jordan's New Constitution, one that would end discrimination and avert environmental catastrophe, though 1/4 of those affected would die as a result of being too strong willed. Eventually, the new JSA caught wind of the ISA's plans though not before the ISA figured out their identities thanks to Brainwave's return. A final battle ensued in the ISA's HQ and The American Dream's main office as the ISA were defeated and Icicle engaged in a final duel with Stargirl, where he was suddenly smashed to pieces by Stargirl's younger stepbrother Mike driving a pickup truck, seemingly killing him.

However, Icicle miraculously survived in reality thanks to his powers. He allied with Ultra-Humanite and a surviving Dragon King to revive Starman and use his body as a puppet (via transplanting Ultra-Humanite's brain) to win over the JSA and be elected U.S. president to implement his policies. However, thanks to Pat Dugan, the JSA was able to see through the conspiracy and defeat the villains, though Icicle faked his death once again. He finally met his end three months later after being tracked down and burned alive by Artemis as revenge for killing her parents.

Personality[]

Like many immigrants, my parents came to this great country in the hope of finding a better future to raise their children. But this past year I have traveled across America from town to town I have seen factories that are abandoned. I've met people in need, in Littleville, Colorado. In Hatton Corner, Indiana. And so many other forgotten communities. And we're gonna help them... just like we've helped Blue Valley. We're gonna rebuild America. One factory and one town at a time.
~ Icicle

Jordan Mahkent was a man driven by tragedy and a desire to do good, albeit with incredibly twisted and heinous means. His actions stemmed from the oppression and injustice his family faced, making him seek a better world for everyone. However, he was also willing to do whatever it took to rid the world of injustices, having a quite ruthless "ends justify the means" philosophy.

Powers & Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Cryokinesis: Icicle fittingly has the power to control and generate ice including creating icicles, freezing the blood of others, and altering the environment around him to a winter flavor.

Abilities[]

  • Master strategist: Icicle formulated the ISA's plan of Project America to reinvent half the country, comes up with several strategies to deal with his foes, and the plot to turn Starman into a puppet to infiltrate the JSA, help win their trust, and eventually use him to win over the country.
  • Charisma: Icicle is highly charismatic to the point of being beloved by his company and the town of Blue Valley, even being able to convince them of his alibi on how he returned from the dead without a fuss.
  • Combat Prowess: Icicle is a skilled fighter, leading the ISA in destroying the original JSA personally in combat.
  • Stealth: Icicle is able to sneak into rooms and onto people undetected and spy on others.

Trivia[]

  • Unlike Icicle's DC comic counterpart; his first name is Jordan instead of Joar.
    • Also, unlike his DC comic counterpart, this version of Icicle is a businessman with ice powers instead of a scientist who invents a gun that drastically lowers temperature.
  • He is very similar to a version of his son, Cameron Mahkent from Smallville. Both of them are enemies to the Justice Society of America who use the alias Icicle and kill Sylvester Pemberton which causes Courtney Whitmore to take on the mantle of Stargirl. In addition, both of them have ice powers that they share with their respective families and lose a loved one.
  • He also shares similarities with Malcolm Merlyn from the CW's Arrowverse:
    • Both of them served as the big bad of the first season of their respective shows (Arrow and Stargirl) and operated as charismatic businessmen in their civilian identities.
    • Both led successful businesses (Merlyn Global and The American Dream).
    • Both of their respective sons are personally acquainted with the main heroes; Oliver Queen being Tommy Merlyn's childhood best friend and Cameron Mahkent as Courtney's classmate, later love interest.
    • Both killed an individual in their respective show's pilot episodes, years before the actual beginning time of the show. Malcolm causes Robert Queen to commit suicide by blowing up the Queen's Gambit while Jordan murders Starman during a fierce battle between the Golden Age Justice Society and Jordan's group of villains.
      • This act inadvertently leads to the main characters becoming heroes making Malcolm and Jordan responsible for most of the events that occurred throughout their respective series.
    • Both their wives died prematurely and sought to honor them by fulfilling a dangerous plan (the Undertaking and Project New America). The difference in this case is Malcolm partially succeeds in his endeavor while Jordan ultimately fails in his endeavor.
    • Both believe their goals to be for the greater good (Merlyn wanted to rid Starling City of crime by destroying the Glades along with everyone that lived there, Jordan aimed to make the world a safer place for America's children by stripping away people's free will and beliefs through mind control) and started their evil schemes after years of planning.
    • Both have their final confrontation with the heroes on a rooftop during the first season's finale and appear to meet their demise, only to be revealed alive and well later on.
  • Barbara Whitmore mistakenly calls Jordan the "Iceman", which happens to be the name of a real life convicted criminal.
    • Ironically, Iceman is also the alias of a superhero from the Marvel Universe with the exact same powers and abilities as Jordan.
  • His intentions in Stargirl season 1 bear some resemblance to Clifford Devoe/The Thinker in season 4 of The Flash. They both wished to create a better world in their own image by reshaping the minds of the world's populace which would've also caused irreparable harm to the planet.
    • Incidentally, both of their plans involved machines coupled with a super-powered being; Devoe had used the radiation abilities of Neil Borman to fuel his satellites whilst Icicle utilized Brainwave's telepathic powers along with Dragon King's amplifier so he could reprogram a significant amount of the Earth's population.
  • In the Stargirl series finale, Jordan Mahkent is killed by Artemis Crock to avenge her parents' death. This is similar to how Dante in season 7 of Arrow was killed by his former protégé Emiko Queen in retribution for killing her mother.
    • Icicle’s death is also eerily similar to the way Ricardo Diaz was killed, as they were both set on fire by dark haired anti-heroines and witnessed only by said characters.
