~ The Idea of Evil |
The Idea of Evil, also known as God of the Abyss, is the overarching antagonist of the Berserk franchise. It is an ancient conceptual entity which resides in the deepest depths of the Astral World, the Abyss, where the realm of matter merges with the World of the Idea. It weaves a complex web of causality, born from humanity's quest for understanding in the face of suffering.
It is responsible for the events of the universe, dictating the fate of humanity through its application of causality and acting according to the collective unconscious desires of the species. It is also the mastermind behind the creation of the five God Hand and their innumerable apostles, who carry out its will with the directive "DO AS THOU WILT.”
By selecting Griffith as the fifth God Hand, it acknowledged its manipulation of events in his ancestry and life to lead him to become Femto.
Appearance[]
The Idea's core looks like a large mound of pulsating flesh which resides in humanity's collective unconscious, like a great dark heart. It responds to humanity's need for a reason to the suffering of their lives, producing said reasons and controlling the collective destiny of all mankind. It is a common consciousness that transcends individuality, acting as the eternal ego of the world. It refers to itself as "the desired god,” referring to its nature as a being craved by all other beings. The Idea's core appears to be that of a heart covered in eyes, drawing in an ocean of feelings and Beherits in and out in great exhalations, like blood through a heart.
Biography[]
“ | Reasons for pain. Reasons for sadness. Reasons for life. Reasons for death. Reasons why their lives were filled with suffering. Reasons why their deaths were absurd. [Humans] wanted reasons for the destiny that kept transcending their knowledge. And I produce those, as it is what I have been brought into existence for. | „ |
In a moment of profound revelation, the entity Griffith encountered explains its existence as he undergoes his transformation into Femto. It wasn't a preordained being born at the dawn of time, but rather a manifestation; born from humanity's relentless search for meaning in a destiny beyond their comprehension. This entity, often referred to as the Idea of Evil by its disciples and as God by many others, governs the swirling sea of causality, the unseen forces dictating the course of events. But it doesn't simply control it – the very fabric of causality is woven with the raw emotions of mankind. This revelation stuns Griffith, shaking his previous beliefs and fostering a newfound acceptance of this godlike force.
The Idea of Evil then makes a startling claim: it is the architect of everything – past, present, and future. It orchestrated Griffith's ascension to the God Hand, a position of immense power. Long ago, it intertwined the bloodlines that would culminate in Griffith's birth, meticulously choosing the era he would arrive in. This meticulous manipulation underscores a final, earth-shattering declaration: Griffith is the "Chosen One."
The burden of choice is placed squarely on Griffith's shoulders. He is granted absolute dominion over humanity. He can be their destroyer, enacting a cataclysmic purge, or their liberator, leading them towards an unknown future. The Idea of Evil assures him that either path will ultimately serve humanity's purpose, a chilling testament to its all-encompassing influence.
Trivia[]
- The Idea of Evil claims that it was created from the negative emotions in human hearts rather than being a natural part of the world or a deity that has existed before the world's beginning. The being is essentially a God formed by the evils of humanity.
- As an extension of the above, it may be that since the Idea only exists because of the aforementioned emotions, it may be possible to purge it from from the Berserk world if humanity casts aside such emotions.
- The Idea of Evil is an evil version of Plato's Theory of Forms.
- Idea is similar to the evil spirit that lives within the Overlook Hotel: like it, the Idea is the product of negative energies unleashed by humanity. However, the Idea of Evil is different from the movie version of the Overlook Hotel, in that the former is entirely made to give a purpose to the suffering of humanity, whereas the latter has free-will and is malevolent in its own regard.
- The episode that the Idea of Evil appears in was never reprinted in any collection by Miura's request, as he stated that he did not want to reveal that much information because he felt it could possibly limit his freedom to develop the story further.
