~ Idrees to Nurullah. |
Idrees is the main antagonist in the 2017 animated drama film The Breadwinner.
He is a young student who studied under his Nurullah, his teacher and Parvana's father, and later joined the Taliban.
He was voiced by Noorin Gulamgaus.
Biography[]
Idrees is responsible for arresting Parvana's father with the Taliban after meeting him and Parvana at the market while the two are selling goods in the market in Kabul. Parvana's family is left without an adult male relative, as her elder brother Sulayman died years ago, leaving her, her mother Fattema, her sister Soraya and her baby brother Zaki without means to support the family, as they are not allowed to go out without a male relative.
After Parvana unsuccessfully tries to procure food while going out as a girl, she decides to dress as a boy and pretend to be Nurullah's nephew, "Aatish," in order to support the family.
Later in the film, Parvana and Shauzia take a hard labor job where Idrees is also in attendance. He recognizes her, and tries to kill her as she flees with Shauzia after striking him with a brick. They narrowly manage to escape from him by hiding inside a cave, shortly before Idrees is dragged by his superiors to fight in the war with America. Idrees is last seen being slapped by a fellow soldier in the truck because he had his gun pointing at him, as they are hauled off to war, with Idrees afraid for his life now that he will have to battle other soldiers rather than bullying defenseless citizens.
Personality[]
Idrees is shown to be very stubborn, aggressive, arrogant and savage towards anyone he comes across. He is also shown to be sadistic and manipulative when he teased Parvana disguised as a boy before realizing who she was and even tried to kill both Parvana and Shauzia.
Trivia[]
- There’s a chance that he didn’t survive the war which explains why he doesn’t appear for the rest of the film which makes his cowardice incredibly ironic for someone who talked big about fighting against the Taliban’s enemies.
