Idrin (also known as Alpha-Hirogen) is a minor antagonist in the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Message in a Bottle" and the main antagonist of the following episode, "Hunters".
He was portrayed by the late Tiny Ron, who also played Lothar in The Rocketeer and Roc in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.
Biography[]
Idrin was a Hirogen hunter who discovered Voyager using the Hirogen's communications network to contact the Alpha Quadrant. He contacted Voyager and told Lieutenant Torres that the network was their property, jamming their link. When Voyager broke through his jamming, he contacted the ship again but refused to negotiate with Captain Janeway, instead trying to jam the link again. Seven of Nine settled the matter by sending a feedback surge through the link that knocked him unconscious.
Idrin was later scouting the area with his Beta when he again came across Voyager crewmembers using the communications network. He discovered a shuttle piloted by Seven and Lieutenant Commander Tuvok attempting to retrieve a message Starfleet had sent via the network and easily disabled their ship and captured them. He expressed disappointment about what easy prey they had been but nevertheless took pleasure in being the first Hirogen to capture one of their species, intending to kill them by dissection and display their organs as trophies or "relics". When they warned him of retribution from Voyager, he simply anticipated a battle with a more worthy opponent.
Despite his Beta's warnings that they should wait for more Hirogen to arrive, Idrin wanted to destroy Voyager personally so he would be the only one to have relics from them. Tuvok attempted to break free but Idrin easily overpowered him. Realising they didn't have enough firepower to defeat the Hirogen in a straight fight, Voyager's crew instead destabilised the singularity at the centre of the communications network so the Hirogen would be caught in its gravity well. The plan succeeded too well, as fire from Idrin's ship and three more Hirogen ships caused the singularity to be destabilised further, pulling them in. Tuvok and Seven were safely beamed aboard Voyager, while Idrin was among those killed when the Hirogen ships were crushed by the black hole.
Trivia[]
The character's name comes from the call sheet for "Message in a Bottle". The credits for his two appearances simply list him as "Hirogen" and "Alpha-Hirogen".
Although a number of sources list Tiny Ron's two Hirogen appearances as the same character, this is not clear from the episodes themselves.
