Iggy Koopa is a supporting antagonist in the Super Mario franchise. He is seen in the Mario cartoons where he is known as Hop Koopa. In the anime, however, he is known by his actual name.
He was originally voiced by Mike Vaughn, who also voiced Ghostface in the first two seasons of Scream the TV Series, but was replaced by Ryan Higgins after Mario Kart 8. He was voiced by Tara Strong as Hop Koopa, who also voiced his twin Hip Koopa in the cartoons.
Appearance[]
Iggy wears large black glasses and has green hair. He is also the slimmest and wildest of the Koopalings. He originally had a blue shell, but in later games, his shell was changed to green. At some point, his hair was similar to Lemmy's signature rainbow mohawk, but from New Super Mario Bros Wii onward, Iggy gained a green palm tree styled mohawk. He has the same yellow skin tone as the other Koopalings and his stomach and feet are padded. Around his eyes are tall, blue rings, whether they are part of his eyes or a reflection on his glasses is yet to be confirmed.
Biography[]
Super Mario Bros. 3[]
Iggy is the fourth Koopaling to be fought. He is encountered on an airship in Giant Land. His battle style is similar to Larry's. Once defeated, Iggy ran off, leaving behind the magic wand he used to transform the king of Giant Land.
Super Mario World[]
Iggy is the first Koopaling to be fought. To defeat him, Mario must knock Iggy into the lava by jumping on his head repeatedly or throwing projectiles at him (i.e. fire balls or cape).
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga[]
Iggy somehow returned in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, and appears in Bowser's castle when it is under Bowletta's control. Again, he is the first Koopaling to be fought. Once defeated, he apparently dies and vanishes.
Super Princess Peach[]
It was revealed that he, along with his siblings, were at one point going to appear in this game but were scrapped in the final version. They even had a full sprite sheet.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]
Once again, Iggy returned alongside the other Koopalings, kidnapping Peach for Bowser. This time, he is the fifth Koopaling to be fought in World 5. He is fought twice, the first time in a fortress with rising/falling platforms, and the second time riding a cart being pulled by a chain chomp, which Kamek uses a spell to increase said chain chomp's size. Once defeated, Iggy and the chain chomp fall off screen, though the former survived, and was last seen after the credits alongside Bowser Jr., Bowser, and the other Koopalings, before Bowser's castle fell on top of them and crushed them.
New Super Mario Bros. 2[]
He and his siblings kidnap Peach, with Iggy taking her to World 2. His arena is shaped as if it were a maze, and he once again rides in a carriage being pulled by a chain chomp, though Kamek isn't here to increase its size this time and it moves much faster and less linear. Iggy is able to exit the arena from the top or bottom and re-enter from the opposite end. Once defeated, he and his chain chomp fall off screen like last time, though the former survives again.
New Super Mario Bros. U[]
Much like in New Super Mario Bros Wii., he is seen inhabiting World 5's jungle world, but this time the region has a name: Soda Jungle. He also has his own airship that hovers around the castle he guards. Once fought, he will summon lava below the ground, and enter a nearby pipe. He will then enter from the top and shoot out three blasts of fire balls, one of which summons a magmaargh that cannot be destroyed. He will then exit out of either the pipe he just entered from or the pipe on the left and come back down, switching from pipe to pipe, before going back on top and repeating. After being stomped on three times, he will fall off screen, with the lava also flowing down. He is seen again in the final cutscene where he and the other Koopalings attempt to get Bowser onto the airship, but Bowser's weight proves too much for the airship and it crashes into a hill, where they all are forced to hang onto Bowser Jr.'s Koopa Clown Car and retreat.
Mario Kart 8[]
Iggy and all of the other Koopalings made their first appearance as playable characters in Mario Kart 8. Iggy and Ludwig were the only two Koopalings to be in the upper medium class.
Super Smash Bros. Series[]
Iggy Koopa has been used as an alternate costume for Bowser Jr. in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Personality[]
Iggy Koopa is typically characterized as being extremely sarcastic, insane, almost never serious, always cracking jokes or making jokes out of everything and being weird overall. But despite this, Iggy is one of the smartest of the Koopalings, even creating all of the robots that he and his brothers used in Yoshi's Safari.
Iggy loves to mess around with and be funny with Mario, as seen in Paper Mario: Color Splash when Iggy calls Mario "pretty boy" or when he pulls a fake out in New Super Mario Bros Wii where after losing to Mario the first time, Iggy gets back up and then pretends to fall back down again before getting back up for real and jumping away. Iggy joking around with Mario about pretending to lose extends further to where if Mario uses a replica thing bone in Paper Mario: Color Splash, Iggy will reply with "A pretend bone? OK, I'll pretend to lose! AHAHAHA!" where Iggy sarcastically mocks Mario for using a replica thing bone.
Iggy's respect for his superiors is questionable, as Mario isn't the only one Iggy will mess around with, as seen in Bowser Junior's Journey where Iggy's response to Bowser saying that Junior is a good kid is "Bahaha! You're joking, right? And people say I'm the crazy one!" leading Bowser to hurting Iggy, where Iggy says afterwards "Oh... it hurts to laugh. But it's still so funny!" although it stands to reason Iggy loves messing around with everyone. However, while all the other Koopalings (minus Roy), seem to have believed that Junior matured during the events of Bowser Junior's Journey, Morton, who was unaware of the character development, says "BUT... JUNIOR WISE? MORTON NOT KNOW." to which Iggy replies with "Heh. That's insightful, Morton." which implies that, even after all that they've been through, Iggy still doesn't have faith in Bowser Junior (even less so than Roy as Roy at least thought they had a good talk). Not to mention at the end of New Super Mario Bros U, Iggy's animation toward Bowser looks mocking as well as the fact many of Iggy's laugh clips are played as the airship is crashing with Iggy doing another seemingly mocking animation at Bowser as the airship is falling.
Iggy is also such a jokester who's less than serious, when he says something smart the other Koopalings don't expect, they all stare at him in surprise. Such as in Bowser Junior's Journey when the minions were acting weird and kept attacking them out of nowhere and then not remembering any of it after a battle where Iggy said "Maybe they were, like, hypnotized or something... " which led the other Koopalings to start staring at him, which made him nervous and he replied with "I mean... just kidding, guys! Ahaha... ha... " before laughing normally to himself immediately after nervously laughing to himself.
Iggy will do something for the sake of a joke even if it is self-destructive. This is seen in Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam and Bowser Junior's Journey. In Bowser Junior's Journey, after Junior tells Iggy to go away, Iggy replies with "You sure? I mean, I am in the mood for a long solo hike through unfamiliar and dangerous territory... See you later, I guess. Bahaha!" where, despite outright acknowledging the dangers of going through unfamiliar territory, Iggy does it anyway. This is also seen in Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam where Lemmy uses his ball against the Mario Bros and Paper Mario and it doesn't exactly go as he expected, Iggy replies with "Lemmy! That was... CRAZY! Bahaha! Now, you're probably wondering how I'm gonna follow that..." and then follows that up by getting his chain chomp and doing something equally crazy, stupid and self-destructive, except Iggy did it on purpose whereas Lemmy did it on accident. Similarly, though destructive to the minions rather than to himself, in Paper Mario: Color Splash, Iggy decides to temporarily leave his battle to go for a "leisurely drive" and leave his minions to fight Mario on their own.
Iggy also jokes with himself when he is alone, as seen in Bowser Junior's Journey where he says "Whoa! Almost walked right off this cliff. That would NOT have been funny. Bahaha!" where he makes a joke about almost walking off the cliff just as he was about to accidentally walk off a cliff after leaving Junior. Iggy will also make a joke as a means of trying to imply that Junior's behavior is bad, such as when he said "Hey, so... we're a little light on Koopalings lately... Bahaha!" in Bowser Junior's Journey.
Iggy also thought it was funny when Roy was saying Wendy is the scariest one of all of them and could maybe actually teach Bowser Junior a lesson, and then was confused about it not being joke when he said "Ahahaha! Wait, were you being serious?" to Roy in response to that.
Trivia[]
- Iggy's name is derived from Iggy Pop.
- Iggy is old enough to be scammed into buying "invincible" chariots for a coliseum battle that he is old enough to host as seen in Paper Mario: Color Splash, but is also a minor.
