Ignia is one of the main antagonists of the 2018 manga series Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest and its 2024 anime adaptation, the spin-off sequel to the original manga/anime series Fairy Tail.
He is one of the Five Dragon Gods that resides in Guiltina, in which he serves as the Fire Dragon God and the guild master of the Fire and Flame Dark guild. In addition, he is the son of the late Fire Dragon King, Igneel, which also makes him the foster brother of Natsu Dragneel, as well as his arch-rival.
His ultimate goal is to eliminate humanity and restore dragons as the dominant species of Earthland, while seeking to battle Natsu at his strongest, as a test to see who is truly the strongest of Igneel's sons.
In Japanese, he is voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto. In English, he is voiced by Alejandro Saab (who also voices Kaigaku in Demon Slayer, and Atsushi Kanamoto/Johnny Black in Sword Art Online: Alicization).
Appearance[]
In his human form, Ignia presented himself a muscular-toned individual with a necklace in golden chains and earrings. The most notable features of him are his flaming red hair with dark tips, as well as the red markings and tattoos that appear throughout his face, as well as on the left side of his body, which seems to take form of a flaming sun.
In his dragon form, Ignia appears to have a strong resemblance to Igneel. The major differences being however is that his hair is still visible, taking the form of literal fire on top of his head & along his back, and he appears to have different markings and tattoos on his chest and horns.
Personality[]
Ignia appears to be a fully condescending individual that's highly egotistical and arrogant. The most apt word to describe him according to fellow Dragon Mercphobia, was "belligerent". While it seems to be the case that the Dragon Gods rival Acnologia's power, Ignia fully believes that he and the others have surpassed him, not even taking account of the power ups that Acnologia's received during his final battle. However, this may be disputable, as Ignia was able to destroy the otherwise indestructible walls of the Great Labyrinth of Dogra created by the deceased Dragon God Dogramag just by standing next to them, causing them to melt. When he unleashed a show of force for his brother Natsu upon telling his foster brother that he was not yet strong enough to fight him (Ignia), his power was such that even fellow Dragon God Selene shook with fear, suggesting that his power was indeed superior to Acnologia's.
He seems to have a borderline obsession of strength, power and the desire of surpassing one another. When he learned of Natsu, his history and relationship with Igneel, Ignia made it his main goal to fight Natsu in a battle to the death to see who is the strongest. He is extremely determined to make sure his fight Natsu is something that happens that he'll occasionally jump in to help Natsu from potential death but will leave him be once he has gotten stronger.
Otherwise, he cares very little for those around him, save for Dogramag, whom he considered his one and only friend. He will burn down many countries and towns, just to show off his display of power. He even tried to provoke Natsu into harboring anger and hatred for him when he threatened the lives of his friends. It also seems that he doesn't care much about the death of his father, despite seeming fully well aware of it, as well as him leaving him behind in the past.
In addition to these aforementioned traits, Ignia also is shown to have a desire to restore the age of dragons, as he revealed to Selene before they engaged in battle that he and Dogramag were elaborating a scheme to return dragons to power after the events of Acnologia's genocide. This scheme involves using a magic lacrima of Dogramag's design to turn all the humans in Guiltina into dragons.
Biography[]
Ignia was alive to witness the Dragon King Festival, but did not participate, as his father did. Fleeing with four other dragons from the conflict after Acnologia rose to power, Ignia and the other God Dragons would eventually train and grow stronger, eventually surpassing Acnologia in strength. Eventually, Elefseria, the founder of the first wizard guild, Magia Dragon and a self-taught Dragon Slayer-turned-dragon would try to defeat and seal away Ignia's power, but Ignia was too strong for Elefseria to defeat.
During Natsu's battle with Mercphobia, Ignia intervenes to save Natsu from the Water God Dragon's whirlpools. Informing Natsu's team that Mercuphobia is only fighting at half-strength, Ignia sets Mercphobia's city of Elmina ablaze. As his fire can burn water, Mercphobia instinctively begins trying to put out the inferno Ignia has caused. Ignia then turns his attention to Natsu, and tells him to eat his flames so that he can defeat Mercuphobia. He then reveals himself as the Fire God Dragon to Natsu, and as Igneel's son; Natsu's foster brother and tells the Dragon Slayer that he won't participate in the fight between Natsu's team and Mercphobia, as he wants Natsu to get stronger on his own before Ignia decides to fight Natsu himself.
Speaking with Natsu, Ignia reveals how he never knew or cared about his father, Igneel, except to avenge him in order to prove he was stronger than Acnologia. He reiterates his desire to fight Natsu as a result, saying that Natsu must grow stronger before they fight. He then threatens to kill Natsu's friends if Natsu refuses to eat his flames and leaves to await the outcome of the battle. After Natsu reluctantly eats Ignia's flames, he enters combat with Mercphobia again and thrashes the Water God Dragon like a rag doll. Ignia's flames eventually provide Natsu with the boost he needs to defeat Mercphobia, but the resulting power surge caused Natsu to lose control, wanting to burn everything to ash, forcing his friends to stop him and bring him to his senses.
Ignia later watched from his lair in a series of volcanoes as Wood God Dragon Aldoron awakened and rampaged. As he watched the Wood God Dragon annihilate the airship fleet of the Magic Council of Guiltina, he mused that no weapon the Magic Council possessed was capable of killing a dragon. Natsu Dragneel would also utilize Ignia's flames, combining them with those of their father, Igneel and fellow Fire Dragon Atlas Flame and his own to defeat Aldoron.
When Natsu killed Aldoron and sealed away the Wood God Dragon's power, Ignia praised his brother's abilities from the seclusion of his volcanic lair. He mused that his brother should keep on burning until there was nothing left in the world to burn, smiling sinisterly at the thought.
Ignia would later appear at the Great Labyrinth of Dogra, a massive maze formed from the bones of the Earth Dragon God, Dogramag, Ignia's only friend, where he sought out Elefseria's heart, which Dogramag had consumed as part of a plan he and Ignia had to restore the age of dragons. Encountering Natsu during the latter's battle with fellow Dragon Slayer Suzaku, Natsu again challenged his brother to a fight, only to be stopped dead in his tracks by his foster brother's power. Ignia then continued on his way after demonstrating a small extent of his abilities, which destroyed a large portion of the otherwise indestructible labyrinth.
Making his way to the labyrinth's center, he eventually found Elefseria's heart, whereupon he was confronted by Selene, the Moon Dragon God, who had sided with humans and stated the age of dragons was over. Ignia, not wanting Selene to use the heart's store of knowledge to try and destroy him and Gold Dragon God Viernes, then burned the heart to ash, much to Selene's shock and dismay. Both dragons then transformed from their human states into their dragon forms, whereupon they prepared to do battle at last.
Ignia and Selene quickly began to trade blows, damaging the labyrinth further, and employing every trick at their disposal. Selene initially thought she had the upper hand, but even with her magic to help her, Selene was heavily damaged by Ignia's flames, while Ignia was himself showing little in the way of exhaustion or injury. The fight caused Natsu, fellow Dragon Slayer Suzaku of Diabolos, and Natsu's exceed friend Happy to stare in shock and amazement. However, for Natsu, the fight caused flashbacks of his father's death and Natsu screamed for the two dragons to stop fighting.
Selene was appalled at why he wanted the fight to stop, but Ignia knew that Natsu did not want to see a repeat of Igneel's death. However, Ignia told Natsu that he was different from their father, and stronger than Acnologia, before sending a full-powered Fire Dragon Roar through Selene's neck. Shocked and horrified by the underhanded blow his brother had delivered, Natsu shouted Ignia's name in rage as his companions looked on in terror.
After defeating Selene, Ignia turned his attention to Natsu, saying that both he and Selene were his enemies, and that he should be thankful that Ignia eliminated another obstacle in his quest for him. When Natsu announced his disgust for the fact that Ignia took down another dragon so heartlessly, Ignia stated that he and Selene were enemies, not friends as Natsu had assumed. Stating that Dogramag was his only friend, he turned his attention to the place where Dogramag's bones lay, whereupon Dogramag, the Earth Dragon God, resurrected himself. Natsu, Suzaku, Happy and a mortally wounded Selene could only watch as the new dragon rose from the ground. Greeting each other as brothers, Ignia and Dogramag began to converse, readying for their plan to restore the age of dragons.
While Dogramag expressed disappointment that Ignia had never visited his grave in 100 years, Ignia remarked that he had no need to given that Dogramag had never truly been dead and had consumed Elefseria's heart to gain both magic knowledge and advance his and Ignia's plans. When Ignia set to begin their plans, Dogramag told the Fire Dragon God to go first, saying he wanted to stretch his muscles and eat the humans in the labyrinth. Ignia was happy to allow Dogramag his pleasure, but told the Earth Dragon God to leave Natsu alive so that he could witness the culmination of their plans before flying away. Agreeing to his friend's terms, Dogramag proceeded to transform into a human form and readied himself to duel the Fire Dragon Slayer as Ignia disappeared.
Ignia would later be revealed as the leader of a guild of dark fire wizards known as Fire and Flame. Watching as his disciples brought Natsu before him after successfully catching him, Ignia offered Natsu the chance to join him, only for his foster brother to rebuff him. To that end, Ignia set his plan in motion; activating the Lacrima he had Dogramag build, Ionia began the process of transforming the humans of Guiltina into dragons as Natsu watched. Before they could begin fighting however, their duel was interrupted by the Black Wizard Faris (the Earth-Land counterpart of Elentear Faris, whom Natsu had encountered earlier in their quest), who had taken the limb of Acnologia that Igneel had bitten off to increase her own powers. Ignia briefly dueled her before teleporting away, eager to engage in what would become a three-way battle between himself, Natsu, and Faris for the fate of humanity.
Powers and Abilities[]
Ignia is the Fire Dragon God whose power rivals with the likes of Acnologia. As such, he has a tremendous amount of magical power, making a powerful individual in general. His physical strength alone makes Natsu's look very minor in comparison. His overall power makes him very much capable of combating with his fellow Dragon Gods such as Mercphobia, in which he can use his flames to evaporate his water.
Powers[]
- Fire Dragon Slayer Magic: As the Fire Dragon God, Ignia specializes in Fire Dragon Slayer Magic. His fire appears to be more powerful than his father's as a small portion of it granted Natsu a tremendous boost in power for him to beat Mercphobia.
- Transformation Magic: Like the other Five Dragon Gods, Ignia is shown to be capable of using this magic as he possesses a human form himself.
Trivia[]
- Ignia is the only known Dragon God that's related to one of the heroes in the series.
- Ignia's dragon form changes several times in the manga; in his first appearances, he has notable tusks, a large horn on his head, and multiple shoulder spikes. In later appearances, his dragon form more closely resembles his father, Igneel. Why this changes is a mystery, though it could be said that it was easier for the manga's creators to draw Ignia in looking similar to his father.
- In-Universe, this could be Ignia taking advantage of the fact that most dragons in their natural forms can transform their physical appearance to a certain extent.
