| ~ Ikkyu's views on etiquette. |
Ikkyu is the main antagonist of the Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan episode Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan - Episode 5: Millionaire Village. He's a mysterious entity with the appearance of a little boy who works as the butler for the Gods of the Mountain and is the one who welcomes the people that want to buy a property in the "millionaire village". As a servant of the Gods, Ikkyu is very strict about etiquette and usually holds tests to the buyers in order to see their good manners, oftentimes with fatal consequences.
In the OVA for Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan, he was voiced by Kaori Mizuhashi in Japanese and Jessica DiCicco in English. In the live-action TV series adaptation for Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan, he was portrayed by Fuga Shibazaki.
Appearance[]
Ikkyu takes the appearance of a small boy with shaggy, blonde hair that is braided on the top. He has big, doll-like eyes that are almost always expressionless. His outfit consists of a brown butler suit with a blue bowtie and checkered pants.
In the TV drama, Ikkyu's hair is black instead of blonde, with his butler suit also being black with a white tie decorated with a green brooch.
Biography[]
Ikkyu meets Rohan and his editor, Kyoka Izumi when they arrive at the mountains looking to buy a property there, since, according to a legend, those who acquire a property in the village are blessed with success and fortune. After welcoming them at the gates, he escorts them into his master's house leaving them to wait with some tea, leaving the room afterwards. Despite this, Rohan suspects that Ikkyu is watching them from afar in order to see if they drink their tea in an appropriate manner and tells Izumi that it's better to wait for him before drinking it. Izumi, however, ends up drinking the whole tea, which catches the attention of Ikkyu who immediately returns to the living room and asks them to leave due to Izumi having already broken three rules of etiquette, the first being sitting in the "seats of honor", the second being stepping on the lines of the tatami carpet and the third being holding the cup in an innapropriate manner.
Izumi begs to have another try and Ikkyu agrees, saying he'll talk to his master about it. After he leaves, Rohan notices that the baby bird he had saved from falling from a tree earlier that day had died, with blood seeping out of the matchbox he was keeping it in. Izumi then receives a sudden phone call and finds out her mother and fianceé had died in a car crash, causing her to break down crying. Ikkyu returns to the room and says that his master had allowed her to take another test, but Rohan suddenly uses Heaven's Door on him. Reading his pages, Rohan finds out about the curse of the mountain, in which those who pass the etiquette test get good fortune, but those who fail will lose someone of value to them. To his surprise, Ikkyu maintains conscious during the Heaven's Door's effect and says that Rohan has broken another rule by using his stand on him, which causes Izumi to die of a heart attack.
Rohan begs for forgiveness and Ikkyu, despite saying that he does not compromise, does give him another chance. He places him in front of a table with a corn alongside various utensils, orderinghim to eat in an appropriate manner. Rohan realizes that this was, in fact, a trap and that the utensils were a distraction since the correct manner to eat a corn would be using his hands. He then reveals to the butler that he was, ironically, breaking a rule at that very moment by stepping on the edge of the tatami carpet, saying that he had used his stand to write on him that he could not see the edges of the carpet. Ikkyu, angered, tells Rohan that he had cheated and was invoking the wrath of gods, asking him to try again, but Rohan declines the offer and decides to leave the mountains for good, thus, reversing the effects of the curse, bringing both Izumi (as well as her fianceé and mother) and the baby bird back to life.
Trivia[]
- The story leaves it ambiguous whether or not Ikkyu is a supernatural being or just a human who happens to serve the Gods of the Mountain, but chances are he might be a spirit or an entity of some sorts, given his connection to them.
- Ikkyu is also able to partially resist Heaven's Door's effect, as he's able to maintain his consciousness while turned into a book. This could imply that he might be able to see Stands, further hinting at him being a supernatural entity.
