Lord Il Capitano, also known as The Captain and the First of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers, is a major antagonist in the 2020 action role-playing fantasy video game Genshin Impact.
He was the First of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers, a group of influential individuals who acted as the chief lieutenants of the Tsaritsa of Snezhnaya. Codenamed "The Captain," he was an honorable and powerful warrior who was deeply respected by his subordinates. He revealed he was from Khaenri'ah 500 years ago.
He is voiced by Wei Wang in Chinese, by Chris Tergliafera in English, and by Ken Narita in Japanese. Tergliafera has also voiced Silva Zoldyck in Hunter x Hunter and Gaston in Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World. Narita has also voiced Sesshomaru in Inuyasha.
Appearance[]
Capitano was an ordinary human who had eerie dark blue eyes that seemed to glow with a strange aura. He wore a helmet to cover his scarred face when he suffered severe injury by the Abyss. He lost his appearance and his flesh turned rotten many years ago due to the curse of immortality.
Synopsis[]
Past[]
Il Capitano was originally a man from Khaenri'ah (which was destroyed by the Heavenly Principles 500 years ago). However, he lost his family and loved ones to the Abyss Order. As one of the pure-blooded Khaenri'an survivors, he was cursed with immortality, much like Pierro was, but his appearance was no longer that of his prime; Abyssal injury scarred his face heavily. Being a Khaenri'an, he was acquainted with Dainsleif, who back then was the leader of the Royal Guards of Khaenri'ah.
Following Khaenri'ah's destruction by the Heavenly Principles, he came into the service of the Tsaritsa, the Cryo Archon and the ruler of Snezhnaya, seeking to overthrow the Heavenly Principles and gets acquainted with Pierro, the former Court Mage of Khaenri'ah, who is now the Director of the Fatui, and a direct subordinate of the Tsaritsa.
The Nigh-Invincible Captain[]
Il Capitano a.k.a. "The Captain" was the First of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers, a group of powerful men and women who commanded the Fatui. The Fatui were a military faction who governed over the nation Snezhnaya and followed the Cryo Archon, the Tsaritsa of Snezhnaya, in her quest to overthrow the Gods of Celestia. The Captain was a powerful combatant who valued honor and was well-liked by his subordinates. On one occasion he shared a battlefield with Tartaglia, the Eleventh Harbinger, who was in awe of his strength.

At some point, Capitano attended the inauguration of a new Fatui Harbinger alongside the Sixth Harbinger Scaramouche and the Eighth Harbinger La Signora. The new Harbinger was a woman named Peruere who had been raised in the House of the Hearth, a Fatui-sponsored orphanage overseen by an abusive Fatui Harbinger codenamed "The Knave." Peruere had defeated and killed the abusive Knave, a crime that the Tsaritsa had decided to pardon. Peruere was invested by Pierro, and she became "Arlecchino" a.k.a. "The Knave." Arlecchino soon reopened the House of the Hearth, where she treated the children better than her predecessor had.
Funeral for The Fair Lady[]
“ | Though her methods tarnished her honor, Lohefalter's sacrifice is a great pity. Her loss shall not hinder our progress. But Dottore... What of Scaramouche and the Gnosis from Inazuma? | „ |
~ Capitano during La Signora's funeral. |
The Captain, alongside the other Harbingers, gathered in a cathedral in Snezhnaya for the funeral of Signora, who had been executed by the Electro Archon Beelzebul during a failed Fatui plot in the nation of Inazuma. Although he disapproved of her methods, which he deemed as dishonorable, Il Capitano nevertheless thought that her loss was a shame. Setting aside the matter of the funeral, the Captain inquired about the ongoing hunt for Scaramouche, who had gone rogue during the Inazuma plot and taken the Electro Archon's Gnosis with him. Il Dottore informed him that they would have to wait for Scaramouche to make his next move before proceeding further. Pierro proceeded to silence the gathered Harbingers and made a speech in La Signora's memory as her coffin was encased in ice.
Knights of Favonius[]
“ | One day, I met the Fatui Harbinger known as The Captain. I can't even begin to imagine how I can deal with an opponent like him. I just... Such powerful people are really on a level of their own, I'm not even remotely close... | „ |
~ Knights of Favonius Front-Line Surveyor Mika Schmidt on encountering Il Capitano. |
Sometime later, the Captain encountered a large expedition party in the northernmost part of Teyvat. The expedition was from the nation of Mondstadt, and was led by the Grand Master of the valorous Knights of Favonius Varka. Although the Fatui had a tenuous relationship with the Knights of Favonius, Capitano worked with Varka and his party. He later parted ways with the Knights and headed to the nation of Natlan. Upon arriving in the nation, the Captain began participating in the endless conflicts that plagued Natlan.
Research Facility[]
After arriving in Natlan, Capitano had his subordinates set up the Phlogiston Extraction Research Center, a secret underground research base built into the Coatepec Mountain in eastern Natlan. The research facility captured and experimented on saurians, with the intention to extract phlogiston from their bodies. The Captain made routine visits to the base in order to keep track of its progress.
Powers & Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Cryokinesis: The Captain had the ability to wield the power of "Cryo," the natural element that governed coldness. Using Cryo, he could generate ice and telekinetically manipulate it into whatever shape he desired. Capitano was known to conjure weapons out of ice, such as a one-handed sword. In his hands, Capitano's ice weaponry could withstands the blows of an Archon.
- Flight: As an application of his ability to telekinetically manipulate the Cryo element, Capitano could coat his own body in a layer of pure Cryo energy in order to lift himself up and grant himself the power of flight. He was able to move at high-speeds while flying, so much so that he could even evade blasts of elemental energy fired by the Pyro Archon herself.
- Immortality: As a pureblooded Khaenri'ahn, Capitano was cursed with immortality. However, he revealed he lost his past appearance due to curse unlike Dainsleif and Pierro, likely due to his previous contact with the Abyssal energy.
Abilities[]
- Political Influence: As one of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers, Capitano was invested with nigh-unlimited executive authority by the Tsaritsa of Snezhnaya. With the political and economical power invested in him, the Captain could call upon almost any resource in furtherance of the goal of the Fatui. He could command the authority of any Fatuus who weren't themselves Harbingers, and presumably wielded unquestionable authority in Snezhnaya. Additionally, his official position as a Snezhnayan diplomat meant that he couldn't be prosecuted in foreign nations without significant political tension being caused.
Equipment[]
- Delusion: A Delusion was a device similar in nature to a Vision, allowing its user to channel elemental energy. Unlike a Vision, however, Delusions weren't bequeathed onto mortals by the gods of Celestia but instead manufactured by the hands of mortals. Created by the Fatui to aid them in their goals, Delusions were personally granted by the Tsaritsa to her loyal subjects; few outside the Eleven Fatui Harbingers were privileged enough to receive a Delusion. Although more powerful than Visions, Delusions were more volatile and gradually drained the lifeforce of its wielder.

Trivia[]
- Like the other Fatui Harbingers, Capitano's name and alias were derived from a stock character in commedia dell'arte, a form of traditional Italian pantomime theater characterized by its masked characters and representation of fixed social types. In commedia dell'arte, Il Capitano was a boastful man who told stories of great conquests he had undertaken, although he never presented any evidence of his deeds.
- Capitano's legendary deeds in battle earned him many monikers from his Fatui subordinates, including "The Ever-Righteous Captain," "The Brave and Fearless Captain," and "The Nigh-Invincible Captain."
