Ilmo and Jaakko Koskela are the secondary antagonists in the 2023 survival horror videogame Alan Wake II, the third installment of the Alan Wake franchise.
They are businessmen who run various businesses and tourist attractions in the towns of Bright Falls and Watery, but later they are revealed to be the leaders of the Cult of the Tree, who kill those people who submerge from Lake Cauldron through rituals to protect the townspeople from the threats from The Dark Presence.
They are both voiced by Peter Franzén.
Biography[]
Background[]
Ilmo and Jaakko are a pair of Finnish-American twin brothers who run various businesses, clubs, and tourist attractions in their hometown of Watery, along with neighboring town Bright Falls. Their temperments would differ from each other, with Ilmo being loud and jovial, while Jaakko was less ambitious and more quiet. When the Federal Bureau of Control fenced and closed off Cauldron Lake and the wilderness surrounding it due to an incident in 2010 surrounding novelist Alan Wake and his disappearance, the brothers would ignore this, and often snuck into the area with bolt cutters for the purposes of their activities as tour guides.
Ilmo and Jaakko, along with various people in both towns, were aware of the unusual disappearances and events that happened around the lake. Having become convinced that the federal government was hiding something about Cauldron Lake, the two infiltrated an FBC laboratory that was set-up near the lake, known simply as the Lake House, under the guise of delivering coffee, and stole a number of files about the 2010 incident, where they would learn about the Taken and the Dark Presence, along with a way to kill the former, by way of cutting their hearts out and using the Clicker in the open wounds.
This discovery, along with Ilmo seeing double of the FBC's insignia while drinking, led the brothers to form the Cult of the Tree, a successor group to the Torchbearers that would protect Bright Falls and Watery from the Dark Presence by any means necessary. Hijacking an FBC monitoring station near the lake, the brothers would attract many people from both towns to the group, including Bright Falls deputy sheriffs Mulligan and Thornton. They would also make preparations to kill Alan Wake in case he would return, out of the belief that if he emerged from Cauldron Lake, he would have "turned bad" like Barbara Jagger.
