The Imperial Japanese Army are the overarching antagonists of the Junji Ito manga Gyo. Like in real-life, the Imperial Army was the ground-based armed force of Japan between 1868 and 1945. During the Pacific War, a group of military scientists were creating bioweapons on an uninhabited island near Okinawa, the location that Tadashi and Kaori would vacation at years later.

During development, they had inadvertently mutated a mysterious strain of bacteria. They had found that any creature that was infected by this bacteria would get horrible gas, and the gas would continually be emitted from their mouths and anuses. The smell, which was compared to that of a rotting corpse, was so bad, it had made many of the researchers ill, and they decided to use it as a weapon against enemy troops.

Biography[]

According to Professor Koyanagi, his father was one of the military scientists working for the Imperial Army during World War 2. During his stay on an uncharted island, where a group of scientists were creating bioweapons to use in war, they had inadvertently discovered a mutated strain of a mysterious form of bacteria that causes its hosts to emit a putrid-smelling gas through their orifices.

The stench from the gas was so overbearing that many of the researchers had turned ill, and the Japanese government had decided that the gas would serve as an effective weapon in battle when enemy troops and resources were running low. They had initially sent in dogs and cats that were infected with the germ into battle, though the germ would also deteriorate the nervous system of those infected, so the germ had limited use in combat.

Koyanagi's father was then tasked to create a device that would allow those infected by the germ to continue scurrying about, even when their nervous systems had shut down. The result of this was a prototype for a sort of walking device that was entirely powered by the gas. The army then sent all kinds of animals into the battle grounds, including dogs, cats, horses, and cows. The devices proved to be effective at walking, and as an effective means of taking down enemies.

Several more prototypes of the devices were created, though all of them were destroyed when American troops had sunken a ship that was transporting them.
